Ramey Takes Sprint Championship At Devil’s Bowl Mesquite, TX (September 30, 2000) - Kevin Ramey captured the 2000 USA Sprint Car Championship at Devil’s Bowl Speedway Saturday night with his fourth victory this month. Rowdy Starnes crowned his first championship at Devil’s Bowl Speedway with a victory in the USA modified feature. J.V. Flores won the street stock main, to put the finishing touch on his first title. Craig Petty topped the late model main, andRamey came into the evening 175 points behind season long points leader Skip Wilson. After missing several races early in the season, Ramey charged through the field in August and September. He had won two straight features at Devil’s Bowl in the Quik Courier/ Burkham Inc Nr. 7M. Wilson’s season had been marked by consistent top five finishes. Ramey took third in his heat with Wilson fourth in his heat. However a rare engine problem forces Wilson to limp across the finish line. The motor in the Texas Rebuilders/ Brook Hollow Rental Nr. 65 was badly damaged. Wilson would be able to start the feature, but would probably only complete a lap or two. That put the championship in Ramey’s grasp. All he had to do was come from 14th and win. If Ramey finished second, he would be second in points. When the green flag fell, Wilson quickly pulled out and had to watch the championship battle from the top of his trailer. Brian Pinckard battled his uncle Jerry side by side fo the first lap until Brian got sideways in turn three. Luckily the entire field was able to miss his car as he pulled to the infield. A lap later Edd French and Brandon Erwin charged up the inside coming out of turn two to put Jerry Pinckard back to third. French began to build his lead with Ramey back in eighth place. Passing the first lapped car on the sixth trip around the Devil’s Bowl half-mile clay oval, French pulled away to a ten car length lead. Ramey was up to sixth when he made his most daring move of the race. As the pack tried to pass the lapped car, Ramey dove between Chad Cavett and Jerry Pinckard entering turn one. Pulling out of turn two he also passed the lapped car and Brian Harvill. That put him in third place behind French and Erwin on the eighth lap. Ramey got a break the next lap when Cavett’s engine let go, bringing out the yellow to erase French’s lead. On the restart, French held the lead while Ramey quickly passed Erwin. On the next lap, French went low in turns one and two to block Ramey’s favorite passing spot. Ramey ran the rim and as they exited the corner he pulled even with French. Charging hard out of the corner, French’s car drifted high and the pair touched. Both kept going, but Ramey was out front. A lap later, French’s nose wing came off in turn one, bringing out the yellow. After the restart, French was unable to keep pace with Ramey without the wing. Ramey charged to the checkered flag and his third straight Devil’s Bowl sprint championship with a full straightaway advantage. French dropped out three laps short of the finish. Erwin had lost a spot to Brian Harvill, but battled back to take a career best second as the pair finished side by side. Fourth was Matt Clevenger with Scott Blackman rounding out the top five. French, Jerry Pinckard and Harvill won the heat races. Starnes almost won the Devil’s Bowl USA modified championship a few years ago, but Saturday night he put the finishing touch on the championship the way he wanted, with a strong feature win, his seventh of the year. A full field of 42 modifieds made heat races critical. Starnes, who had blown a transmission in the B main last week, won his heat. With the highest point average for the season, Starnes started outside the ninth row as 20 cars qualified through the five heat races. Steve Sickels led the opening laps after racing three wide for much of the first lap. Two early cautions slowed the race, with Sean Doughty and Richard McGibboney passing Sickels on the fourth and fifth laps. Starnes made his way in to the top five in the Starnes Trucking / Cain’s Racing Engines Nr. 50X on the sixth lap while Sickles battled side by side with Doughty for the lead. The hard racing took its toll as Sickels went off the pack straight to bring out the final yellow a couple laps later. McGibboney made a move on Doughty after the restart, but Starnes flew around the top of turns three and four to take the lead. Starnes stayed out front by five car lengths as the battle raged behind him. Randy Kirkland, who led the modified points for the first half of the season, moved up to fifth on lap ten. The took fourth three laps later and second as the white flag flew. Kirkland edged past Doughty on the final lap for the runner up position, with Rusty Trevathan and McGibboney rounding out the top five. Bobby Ruffin, Marc Madison, Thomas Blackwell, Starnes and Rick McCommas won the heat races. Dink McCullough and Darrell Hathcock won the twin B mains. Tom Lorenz captured his third Timber Wolf Hard Charger Award with his run from 16th to 6th. Petty topped the last late model main of the season by leading only one lap, the last one. Steve Trevathan started from the pole for the 15-lapper and quickly took the lead. Early in the race, the battle was for third but a couple cautions just past the halfway point brought the field right up on Trevathan’s rear bumper. Petty had moved from sixth at the start to second in the First State Bank/ Performance Auto Supply Nr. 5P. He got a run on Trevathan on the 12th lap, and took the lead on the back straight. But the caution flew moments later, and Petty was sent back to second for the restart. Trevathan held the fastest line on the final restart, but Petty was all over his rear bumper. The pair raced inches apart through the turns with Petty edging ahead on the final circuit to take the win, his second of the season. Third behind Trevathan were Kevin Rowland, Harry Hronas and Ronnie Long. Dale McEuen locked up his first late model championship at Devil’s Bowl. Stephen Manning and Petty won the heat races and Monte O’Neal won the trophy dash. J.V. "Fireball" Flores got a late start to the 1999 season. He was the dominate driver late in the year. In 2000, he started early and led the points race from start to finish. Saturday night he claimed his championship with his seventh feature win of the season. Starting the Schramm’s Ammo and Weapons/ AA Autobody Nr. 52 on the inside of the eighth row, Flores had to work his way through a crowded pack. Mike Miller paced the first three laps, but went to the pits to change a flat tire during the first caution. Thomas Weeks took over the top spot. Frank Shafer got tangled with another car and spun on the front straight during the restart. Flores avoided the carnage of both cautions and was up to sixth. On the restart, he moved to the lead pack. The top four cars raced almost side by side for four laps before Flores was able to go around the outside in turn four for the lead. Leaving the rest of the cars to battle for second, Flores charged to the checkered flag and his first championship. Ricky Wycough claimed second, followed by Tim McManus, who came back from an early spin. Jeff Welborn and Chuck Hooks rounded out the top five. Shafer, Flores and Hooks won their heat races and Danny Florence won the B main. The Devil’s Bowl 2000 season finishes with three multi-day events in October. The 7th Annual Devil’s Bowl Nationals featuring the ASCS O’Reilly Outlaw Sprint Cars runs at the famed half-mile clay oval on Friday and Saturday, October 6 & 7.
