Dollansky Tops Outlaws At Devil’s Bowl

Mesquite, TX (March 10, 2001) - Craig Dollansky came from outside the eighth row to win Saturday night’s Pennzoil World of Outlaws A feature as Devil’s Bowl Speedway celebrated its 28th Annual O’Reilly Spring Nationals. Troy Taylor in the Caroline’s Voodo Café Nr. 56 paced the USA modifieds from start to finish.

Paul McMahan was the fastest in time trials on a perfectly prepared track with a time of 13.766, just over 120 mph for the lap in the United Expresslines Trailers Nr. U2. The fast track made the start of the heat races critical with only four cars transferring directly to the A feature. Andy Hillenburg edged Gary Wright to win the first heat. Steve Kinser taking the second heat with an outside move past Donny Schatz on the start of their heat. Johnny Herrera topped the third heat with Mike Goodman coming from sixth to take second. Jason Meyers charced from the second row to win the fourth heat with Jason Johnson right behind. Brian Paulus almost spun in his heat, but won the B main by tracking down and passing Daryn Pittman on the final lap. Tim Shaffer and Brooke Tatnall took the final two transfer spots from the 21 car B main.

The outside was the place to be for Joey Saldana as he took the lead of the ChannelLock Dash ahead of preliminary feature winner Danny Lasoski. Mark Kinser suffered the most, slipping off the back straight on the opening lap, and dropping out of the dash early. That put him outside the fifth row for the 30-lap feature.

Saldana tried to cut off Lasoski on the start of the $15,000 to win feature, sliding up infront of Lasoski in turn four as the green flag fell. Lasoski moved to the inside, and pulled ahead of Saldana as they exited the second turn. Dollansky was fifth after two laps. The first caution flew on the fifth lap for Jason Meyers. Two laps later Randy Hannagan stopped on the back straight. On that restart contact in turn two sent Daryn Pittman and Mike Goodman flipping through turn two. Danny Woods spun on the restart, and after only a single lap of green contact with Jason Johnson send Brian Paulus over in turn two. Blaney was caught on one of the restarts and fell back to fifth. Hillenburg and Steve Kinser were up from starting in the seventh row sixth and seventh.

When the race finally resumed, Saldana slid up the second turn as Dollansky moved into second in the Polydome Nr. 7. In a ten lap green flag run, Lasoski caught the back of the pack, but Dollansky and Hillenburg were the drivers to watch. Dollansky moved up even with Lasoski, and Hillenburg made it a three way battle for the lead. The yellow flew after 20 laps when Blaney broke a shock and brushed the wall. That gave Lasoski a needed clear track for the restart, but Dollansky flew around the top of turn two and blew past Lasoski.

With the track drying under the pressure of the 25 car field and a light breeze from the south, Dollansky had the setup and quickly pulled away to a 15 car length lead. With just four laps before the finish, Hillenburg battled past Lasoski for second. A caution when Dale Blaney stopped on the back straight put Hillenburg on Dollansky’s rear bumper, but when the green came out Dollansky easily pulled away for the victory. Lasoski almost nipped Hillenburg on the last lap, but had to settle for third. Steve Kinser and Brad Furr was fifth. Gary Wright was sixth. Hillenburg, Steve Kinser and Wright all had terrible nights Friday, but top six finishes Saturday redeemed their weekends. Tim Shaffer, Saldana, Mark Kinser and Jac Haudenschild rounded out the top ten. Danny Wood came back to 11th after falling to the back of the field after his spun on the ninth lap.

Taylor ruled the Devil’s Bowl half-mile throughout the late 80's and early 90's with several late model championships. He was almost perfect Saturday night in his USA modified, placing second in his heat, and leading the 15-lap feature flag to flag. Taylor easily pulled away from the field and was never seriously challenged despite two cautions. The battle was behind Taylor, with several drivers in the runner-up spot, only to fall back as the race progressed. Paul White came from the 11th row to take second late in the race, with Randy Kirkland third, follow by Kenny Gaddis and Jody Mayne. Jerry Cowart and Bobby Freeman won the twin B mains. Cheyney Hopkins, Kirkland, Steve Sickels, Skeet Amason and Don Pierson won their heats as 47 modifieds filled the pit area.
