Erwin Opens Devil’s Bowl Points Season With Win Mesquite, TX (March 31, 2001) - Brandon Erwin paced the USA sprint cars from start to finish Saturday night to win the first feature on the 2001 points season at Devil’s Bowl Speedway. Darren Ellis and Rowdy Starnes claimed the late model and USA modified victories respectively. Andy Clower only led three quarters of a lap in the street stock main, but it was the one that counted for his first win at Devil’s Bowl.Erwin’s heat race victory gave him the pole position for Saturday’s 20-lap sprint feature. He pulled quickly away from Scott Blackman, only to have the race halted before he got down the back straight. Third row starter Dennis Welch got tangled up and flipped in the second turn. A total of six cars were involved in the crash and dropped out. When the green flag flew again, Erwin again pulled away into the lead. The young driver was flawless as he caught lapped traffic just seven laps into the race. Working smoothly past the slower cars, Erwin never let anyone get within 15 car lengths as he cruised to his second Devil’s Bowl victory. The win capped an exciting month for Erwin, who started his first Indy Racing League Northern Lights Series event in Phoenix a couple weeks ago. Greg Young started ninth in his first outing in the Jimmy Musik Nr. 9 and made a late charge to take second from Blackman as the white flag flew. Glen Stubblefield, Jr. and Jeff Liles rounded out the top five. Defending Devil’s Bowl champion Kevin Ramey benefitted from the cars dropping out in the opening lap red flag to go from 20th at the start to second on lap six. However, the mechanical problems that dropped him out of his heat race returned in the feature, sending him to the pits before the halfway mark. Along with Erwin, Blackman and Bill Harvill won their heats. The wildest finish of the night came in the street stocks. First early leader Frank Shafer lost a right rear tire. Thomas Weeks took over the lead on the fourth lap, and battled with Richard Miller the rest of the way. On the final lap, the pair were inches apart as they tried to pass a lapped car in turn two. Weeks got sideways, and collected Miller. Both were able to continue, but Andy Clower in the PM Services / JGM Cleaning Nr 25X charged around the outside to take the lead and the victory. Clower started ninth, and avoided the beating and banging that sent several cars to the pits with flat tires on his way to his first street stock win at Devil’s Bowl. Miller hung on for second, with Weeks third. Michael Murphy and Mike Meeks, Jr. rounded out the top five. Miller and Shafer won the heat races. Earlier in the evening, drivers collected over $1,000 for the family of street stock driver Steve Hall. He finished 12th in points last season, but died in a highway accident a few days before Christmas last December. Rowdy Starnes started the defense of his 2000 championship the way he wanted Saturday night, leading every lap of the USA modified 15-lap feature. Starting the Starnes Trucking / Millen Oil Nr. 50X on the outside of the front row, Starnes fought off Ronnie Welborn on the opening lap and never looked back. Forty-one modifieds took to the track at Devil’s Bowl Saturday, with 22 making the feature. Only one caution slowed the race, but it was traffic that posed the greatest danger to Starnes. He was able to avoid the slower cars and maintain his lead all the way to the checkered flag. Dale Wester and Welborn battled the entire race, with Wester taking second in the final laps. Chuck Beusch and Randy Kirkland has strong runs to finish fourth and fifth. Kevin Rowland and Steve Sickels won the twin B mains, with Welborn, Wester, Beusch, David Gailley and John Fenton winning the heats. Darren Ellis made a strong return to regular competition at Devil’s Bowl Saturday night, leading every lap in his Sport City Toyota Nr. 2 late model. After pacing the opening heat from flag to flag, he stared on the outside front row for the 15-lap feature. The former Devil’s Bowl late model champion charged around the half-mile clay oval to victory. He was never seriously challenged in the run to the checkered flag. Defending late model champ Dale McEuen took second with Ronnie Long third, followed by Mike Jones and Jimmy Quick, Jr. McEuen won the other heat.
