White Leads Sprints Flag to Flag At Devil’s Bowl

Mesquite, TX (April 7, 2001) - George White paced the USA Sprint Cars from start to finish on his way to his second feature win at Devil’s Bowl Speedway Saturday night. Tim McManus also went wire to wire in the street stocks. Kevin Rowland topped a close USA modified main and Stephen Manning claimed the late model win.

White knew he had a challenge when he lined up on the outside of the front row with three time defending Devil’s Bowl USA sprint champion Kevin Ramey on the pole. As the green flag fell White got a good run through turn four in the Builders Electric / Swofford Electric Supply Nr. 1X. He charged hard into the first turn and stayed even with Ramey through the first two corners. The pair raced side by side down the back straight. On the outside, White was able to carry the car a little deeper into turn three and edged ahead to lead the first lap. Despite takin the lead, White was not guaranteed victory. Maintaining a three car length lead, White charged around the half-mile clay oval for six laps until he caught slower cars. Ramey’s experience in traffic at Devil’s Bowl was a threat to White’s lead, but the caution flag fell on the seventh lap. The restart gave White a clear track, but everyone stopped two laps later when Rick Dehr slowed entering turn one. Rodney Brown tangled with Dehr’s car, with Dehr flipping across the top of the turn.

The red flag gave Ramey a chance to move the top wing to free up the car in the middle of the corners. White took the green flag and pulled away by up to 10 car lengths. Ramey closed rapidly in the last laps of the race as White encountered heavy lapped traffic. Ramey pulled alongside as the white flag fell, but could not take the lead in turn one. A few feet later, something on the left front of Ramey’s car broke, sending the car sharply off the turn. White stayed clean and flew to victory by five car lengths over Chad Cavett. Paul White, Skip Wilson and Jerry Pinckard completed the top five. Cavett, Ramey and Dennis Welch won the heat races.

There was little doubt which car was fastest in the 12-lap street stock main. Tim McManus took off from the outside of the front row and never looked back. Even a first lap crash in turn one could not slow McManus in the F&J Construction Nr. 29. The question was had his horrible luck while leading last season carried over to the new year. McManus suffered flat tires, mechanical problems or was collected in other driver’s crashes in six features last season. Three times during the caution free race, on laps five, eight and eleven, McManus managed to avoid slower cars sliding up directly in front of his car. Frank Shafer ran a strong second until trouble on the final lap. McManus as half a lap ahead of the second place car of Thomas Weeks as the checkered flag fell. Shafer limped home in third, followed by Richard Miller and Michael Murphy. McManus and Weeks won the heat races.

After mechanical problems last week, Stephen Manning was out to win the late model feature Saturday. The Capital Electric / Baxter & Sons Elevator Company Nr. 77 started on the outside of the second row. He charged into second place and took the lead from Keith Darrow by running low through turn two ont he fourth lap. Manning had no trouble for the rest of the caution free 15-lap race. Even when lapping a slower car, Manning was not slowed as he claimed the victory. Brad Zimmerman came from the fourth row to take second, followed by Dale McEuen, Jimmy Quick, Jr. and Britt Ables. Darrow and Manning won the heat races.

Last week Rowland won the TimberWolf Hard Charger award for moving up in the feature. The points he earned put him 12th on the grid as 23 USA modifieds took the green flag. In the closest race of the evening, Aaron Booze led the opening lap, with Kevin DeLashaw leading the next four circuits. A fifth lap caution helped Rowland close in on the leader. He was up to second whent he race resumed. After a great side by side race, Rowland edged ahead at the line as the seventh lap was completed. Rowland had a slight breather as an exciting battle developed for second between defending champion Rowdy Starnes, Dale Wester and Rusty Trevathan. They traded position lap by lap for several circuits. A caution two laps before the finish bunched the field. The restart put Starnes on the outside and he took off as the green flag fell to take second. Starnes and Rowland raced side by side for the final lap, which Rowland holding on to the lead to take the victory by less than a car length. Third was Wester, with Trevathan fourth. James Creagh was fifth at the flag. Tom Lorenz and David Booze won the twin B mains, with Starnes, Wester, Darrell Hathcock, Chuck Beusch and Jody Mayne winning the heat races. Starnes won the hard charger this week with his run from 16th to second.
