Neighbors Sets the Pace in ASCS Opener at Devil’s Bowl Mesquite, TX (April 20, 2001) - Larry Neighbors took advantage of a fast race track to lead every lap of the United Expresslines ASCS Outlaw Sprint Car 25-lap feature at Devil’s Bowl Speedway Friday night. The event marked the opening of the 2001 ASCS national tour. Jody Mayne topped a close USA modified companion event. The ASCS outlaw sprint competition was close from the start of the evening. Defending national champion Wayne Johnson of Oklahoma City topped the first heat race. A field of 44 cars was on hand with Aaron Berryhill, Broken Arrow, Okla., Michael Dupuy, Amite, La., Gary Wright, Hooks, Texas, and J.P. Bailey, Collinsville, Okla. winning heat races. Neighbors started the Neighbors Coffee Service Nr. 29N on the outside fourth row in the third heat race and finished right behind Dupuy. Jeff Day, Greenville, Texas, won the first B main in a close battle with Zach Chappell, Talala, Okla. This was Day’s first outing in the Lanny Row owned The Shop Diesel Service / Caddo Grain Nr. 41. ASCS regular Dale Howard, Byhalia, Miss., won the second B main over John Pate, Angleton, Texas. Chappell’s sister, Stephanie Chappell also qualified for the A feature with a third place run in the second B main. A fast track and a competitive field produced the only incident of the evening on the start of the ASCS feature. Fort Worth driver George White got tangled with another car and started flipping in turn four as the 24-car field came down for the green flag. The cars were accelerating for the start when White got turned sideways in the eighth row. By the time he came to a stop, Stephanie Chappell and Rick Berndt, Houston, had also flipped and at least four other cars sustained damage. Neighbors and Dupuy were on the front row based upon passing points earned during their heat race. Racing side by side through the first corner, Neighbors took the lead. From that point to the checkered flag, he ran perfect lines around the half-mile clay oval on his way to victory. The only thing that slowed Neighbors was lapped traffic. The caution flag kept the second place cars behind Neighbors as two yellow flags flew when Neighbors entered heavy lapped traffic on the ninth and 19th laps. With a clear track he charged to victory. Berryhill was on Dupuy’s rear bumper for much of the race and took the second place position as the white flag fell in his Phillips 66 TropArctic Nr. 66. Dupuy was third in the Buster’s Thundercarts / Trailor World Nr. 00, followed by Wayne Johnson in the F&J Construction Nr. 29. Gary Wright was fifth in the Pannell Motorsports Nr. 9 after trading the spot several times in the final laps with Kevin Ramey, Fort Worth in the Quik Couriers Nr. 7M. Mayne started the Tom Loving Leasing Nr. 6L on the inside of the fifth row as the 15-lap modified main got the green flag.. Bobby Freeman went around the outside to take the early lead, but Jerry Cowart took the top spot on the seventh lap. A few laps later, it was Cowart, Mayne and Tom Lorenz just inches apart for the lead, when Mayne and Cowart made contact in turn three. Mayne and Lorenz pulled past Cowart. Mayne took the win by a half car length over Lorenz, with Cowart third. Rowdy Starnes and Kevin DeLashaw were fourth and fifth. Mayne took the TimberWolf Hard Charger award for passing eight cars on his way to victory. Rick McCommas, Darrell Hathcock and Cowart won the heat races.
