McGibboney Masters Modifieds at Devil’s Bowl Mesquite, TX (April 21, 2001) - Richard McGibboney overcame a very competitive USA modified field to capture his first feature win at Devil’s Bowl Speedway this year Saturday night. Ronnie Long topped the late models, Skip Wilson ran side by side for several laps before winning the USA sprint car main and Ricky Wycough claimed the street stock feature win. Through four weekends of racing, there has not been a single repeat winner at Devil’s Bowl this year. McGibboney started his Baber’s Garage / Smiley’s Racing Products Nr. 19 on the inside of the fourth row. High winds dried out the track in turns one and two to give drivers problems all evening. Marc Madison was the first victim on the opening lap of the modified 15-lapper when he spun in front of the entire field in turn two. McGibboney made a masterful move to the bottom of the track to miss the spinning car and climb to second. Polesitter Joe Nevoit took the lead as the race resumed. McGibboney searched for the fastest line around the half-mile clay oval. Tony Batt joined the lead group to make it a three wide race. Batt was fast around the top of the track in turns three and four, McGibboney gained ground on the bottom in turns one and two. They raced around the track side by side with Batt taking the top spot on the fourth lap. McGibboney was second and pulling ahead on the back straight. On the ninth lap, he got a strong enough run off turn two to allow him to pull in front of Batt in three and four. McGibboney was able to pull away for a five car length lead as Batt had to battle with Kevin Rowland. When the second caution of the race flew on the 13th lap, Batt and Rowland restarted right on McGibboney’s rear bumper. Jody Mayne joined the fray to make it a four wide battle for the lead during the final two laps, but McGibboney would not be denied as he claimed his first win this season. Batt, Rowland and Mayne finished in order, three with Tom Lorenz fifth. Ronnie Welborn and Randy Kirkland won the twin B mains. Bobby Freeman, Dale Wester, Batt and Rowland won the heat races. Steve Sickels came from 19th on the start to seventh to win the TimberWolf Hard Charger Award. Long also started on the inside of the fourth row and had to avoid early spins. A very dry slick spot in the middle of turn two gave the late model drivers problems all race. Harry Hronas set the pace for the first three laps before Stephen Manning claimed the top spot. After a sixth lap caution Long made a perfect restart and stalked Manning as the race resumed. Long took the lead a lap later and pulled away as Manning started to fade. A tenth lap caution put Brad Zimmerman right behind Long. Manning could not come up to speed on the restart and fell back six positions. Zimmerman tried to keep up with Long but had to settle for second at the checkered flag. Darren Ellis crossed the line third, but was light at the scales, dropping him to 17th. Dale McEuen took third, with Keith Darrow and Mike Jones fourth and fifth. Darrow and Manning won the heat races. A field of 22 USA sprint cars took the green flag in the 20-lap feature. Pole sitter Jeff Shaddock got sideways in turn four on the start, but everyone slowed enough to allow him to recover and the race continued. Edd French charged out front for the early lead. Jimmy Goodwin charged up to second, followed by Glen Stubblefield, Jr. and Wilson in the Texas Rebuilders / Bubba’s Plumbing Nr. 65. The drivers searched for the fastest line, with French and Goodwin high most laps, Stubblefield and Wilson trying the low line. The caution free race kept the fans on their feet as Wilson took third on the tench lap and second on the 12th circuit. Wilson finally got the lead on the 17th lap after pulling ahead of French several times on the back straight, only to lose the lead in turn four. Working past lapped cars, Wilson built a small lead in the final laps for the victory. Goodwin was second, with Eric Payne up from 17th to third. Stubblefield took fourth with Ricky Summers fifth. Rawdy Hull, Wilson and Chad Cavett won the heat races. Spinning cars were an obstacle for leaders in the street stock 12-lap feature. Mike Walls paced the opening laps, only to spin while trying to avoid a stopped car. Wycough took the lead in his Robbins Paint Co. / Magee Truck & Trailer Repair Nr. 48. For several laps he battled side by side with Tim McManus. They traded the top spot several times before Wycough edged ahead in the final two laps. Racing to the checkered flag, Wycough took the victory after a side by side battle on the final lap. Frank Shaffer was third, with points leader Thomas Weeks fourth and Trandel White fifth after Butch Rymers was light at the scales. McManus and Mike Meeks, Jr. won the heats.
