White and O'Neal Record Second Wins

Mesquite, TX (April 28, 2001) - George White became the first two time feature winner in USA sprints at Devil’s bowl this season, and Skip O'Neal was the first late model repeat winner. Tom Lorenz became the seventh different driver to win a USA modifieds feature at Devil's Bowl this season. Mike Walls claimed the street stock victory after Richard Miller was disqualified in a post race tech inspection.

Keith Walker took off and left the USA sprint car field early in the 20-lap feature. Close racing for second between Rodney Brown and Jeff Shaddock kept a lot of cars close together, but Walker had everyone covered. In the tight traffic Kevin Ramey’s car was damaged. White had seen Ramey pull to the bottom of turn four to pass several cars. When the race resumed after a seventh lap caution, White worked his way up to third. A lap later Matt Clevenger tried to get past Brown entering turn one. The two made contact, sending Clevenger into a violent end over end and cartwheeling flip. He was able to walk away from the crash. Adjustments under the red flag helped several drivers, including White. He moved to second in the Builders Electric / Swofford Electric Supply Nr. 1X a lap after the restart and on the next trip around the half-mile clay oval he got a run off the bottom of turn four to slide ahead of Walker in turns one and two. Bob Ewell made use of his experience at Devil’s Bowl to climb to second after starting 15th on his first night this season. He had a couple runs on White, but had to back out as they lapped a slower car. A 17th lap caution slowed the race. White was perfect on the restart and charged to the victory. Ewell could not find traction to pass and had to settle for second, with Jerry Pinckard third. Brian Harvill nipped Glen Stubblefield, Jr. for fourth by inches at the checkered flag. Walker, Clevenger and Shaddock won the heat races.

Skip O’Neal has had an up and down season. He has only finished two features in four nights of racing, but he won both. That point average put the Urban Fire Protection / Wes Lockridge Contracting Nr. 8 on the outside fo the third row as 18 late models took the green flag for the 15-lap feature. Chuck Beusch has plenty of laps around the Devil’s Bowl oval, and knew exactly how to pull away as the green flag fell. O’Neal ran the top, but had to battle with Britt Ables for third in the opening circuits. Ronnie Long also found room at the top of turn two to join the battle. By the sixth lap it was Beusch out front with O’Neal and Long rapidly closing. On the ninth lap, O’Neal was side by side with Beusch and took the top spot as the leaders had to dodge a lapped car in turn three a lap later. Beusch dropped out a couple laps later as Stephen Manning and Long battled for second. O’Neal claimed his second win of the season, with Long taking second on the last lap. Manning was third, followed by Darren Ellis and Ables. Beusch and Ron Lane won the two late model heat races.

Three cautions before the first lap was complete jumbled the USA modified field. Tom Lorenz avoided early trouble while Dave Peoples kept taking the lead only to have the yellow force the race back to a complete restart. Peoples finally led one lap under green, but his car faltered a lap after the restart for another caution. Joe Nevoit took over the top spot while Lorenz was 12th after starting 15th. With everyone trying to crowd through the bottom, Lorenz had the top to himself and the Smiley’s Racing Products Nr. 84 flew past much of the field. Two laps of green flag racing put him fourth, and a lap later he took the lead on the outside of turn three. The fifth caution flag of the race flew on the eighth lap. Lorenz ran solidly out front, avoiding lapped cars and holding his position straight to the checkered flag. Due to winning his heat and the trophy dash, along with the feature, Lorenz took home a $100 bonus from Park Auto Sales for the sweep. Richard McGibboney earned the TimberWolf Hard Charger award with his run from 18th to second. He slipped ahead of Rick McCommas on the last lap for the runner-up spot. Nevoit was fourth with Tony Batt fifth. Marc Madison was not injured when his USA modified flipped while leading his heat race. Along with Lorenz, Peoples, Nevoit and Batt won heat races. McGibboney and Kevin Rowland won the twin B mains.

Walls victory came after a hard race which include at least one crash that damaged his Lone Star Lubrication / Jiffy Lube Nr. 38. Shayne Gatlin set the pace from the green flag while Walls was mired back in the pack. A mid-race collision with another car damaged Walls’ car, but he was able to continue. Though the damage looked severe, it did not slow Walls on his way to his first win this year. He was in 12th place halfway through the 12-lap feature only to climb into the top five after a ninth lap crash. After Richard Miller took the lead from Gatlin on the 11th lap, Walls avoided Gatlin’s spinning car a half-lap later and moved up to second. Miller’s car beat Walls across the finish line, but did not pass a post race technical inspection. With Walls taking the victory, Ricky Wycough was second, followed by Chuck Hall, Tim McManus and Gary Whitaker in the top five. Thomas Weeks, Gatlin and Hall won the heat races.
