McManus Takes Street Stock Points Lead With Win

Mesquite, TX (May 12, 2001) - Tim McManus topped the street stocks for the second time this year at Devil’s Bowl Speedway Saturday night. The win, and the misfortune of Thomas Weeks, gave McManus the points lead for the first time this year. Steve Trevathan topped the late models. Kevin Ramey took his second USA sprint car victory and Jody Mayne topped the USA modifieds for his second win in 2001.

Starting the 12-lap street stock main on the inside of the eighth row, McManus has a long way to go Michael Grubbs took the early lead. Chuck Hooks took the lead on the next lap, while McManus moved the F&J Construction Nr. 29 up through a packed field. He was tenth when the first caution flew on the third lap. Several cars had problems on the restart, and McManus was able to charge through the middle of the pack. By avoiding a spinning car which slowed several others, McManus was able to move up to third on the sixth lap. Two trips later around the half-mile clay oval, and McManus pulled past Hooks on the back straight. As the drivers charged caution free to the checkered flag, McManus built his lead to take the victory by a comfortable margin. Last week’s winner Mike Walls was second, followed by Frank Shafer, Hooks and Michael Murphy. McManus, Murphy and Mark Reedy won the heats.

Trevathan had a perfect night in the late models, leading every lap of his heat race and the 15-lap feature. In only his third race this year, Trevathan was perfect on a track that got faster throughout the evening. When the green flag dropped on the 18-car late model field, Trevathan fought off a challenge from Mike Nelson down the front straight and took the lead entering turn one. An early caution put Ron Lane right behind Trevathan for the restart, but the driver of the Hawk Aviation Nr. 21 late model pulled away. While Trevathan raced ahead of the field, a multi-car battle developed for second. Lane spun in the tight racing just before the white flag flew. That setup a two lap dash to the checkered flag, but Trevathan had no trouble scoring his first win. Mike Jones was second at the flag, followed by Skip O’Neal, Ronnie Long and Darren Ellis. Stephen Manning won the other late model heat.

Ramey is the only driver to win three straight sprint car championships in Devil’s Bowl history. Despite starting tenth in the 20-lap feature, he is always a threat to those out front as the race draws to a close. Keith Walker was the driver on the move Saturday night, after leading every lap of his heat race, he won the dash and was in position to win the Parks Auto Sales Sweep bonus when the green flag fell on the feature. Walker charged out front after a short battle with Rawdy Hull. Three early cautions kept the field close, but Walker was always able to pull away. The fast conditions dried the track in turns one and two, making the track slippery in spots. Walker was running well until he spun in the middle of turn two on the tenth lap. Ramey had battled his way past the rest of the field and took the lead with the restart. Ramey had the Quik Couriers / Burkham Construction Nr. 7M setup perfectly and was flying around the track, building his lead lap by lap. He was moving up on a five car battle for fourth, having lapped the rest of the field when the red flag flew. Glen Stubblefield was in the middle of the pack racing for fourth. The cars were sliding around like hockey players in the turn when someone made contact and Stubblefield went end over end. He walked away from the wreck. Ramey pulled away on the restart to lead the final two laps. Hull claimed second with Matt Clevenger a strong third. Ricky Summers and Greg Young rounded out the top five. Walker, Summers and Bill Harvill won the heats and Brian Harvill won the B main.

A field of 37 USA modifieds filled the pits, with Dave Peoples, Ronnie Welborn, Randy Kirkland and Tony Batt winning the heat races. Dale Wester and Jeff Welborn won the twin B mains. The 22 top cars took the green flag for the 15-lap feature with Billy Fronterhouse and Jay Miller on the front row. Miller was strong from the start, but slowed as the first lap was completed. Bobby Freeman charged into the lead and tried to pull away. The yellow flag flew early and often keeping the field tightly bunched. Mayne avoided the incidents and was in the top five after three laps of green flag racing after starting 14th. The Tom Loving Leasing/ White Rock Automotive Nr. 6L ran the top of the track and allowed Mayne to close on the leaders. Freeman, Randy Kirkland and Mayne were the top three after five laps. They raced inches apart until the eighth lap when Freeman slipped slightly in turn one. The three bumped together. Mayne continued and Freeman was able to resume racing before the caution flew. Kirkland was done for the evening. Mayne pulled alongside Freeman after the race resumed and took the lead on the back straight. The caution flew for the fifth time just before the white flag, erasing Mayne’s five car length lead. On the restart and dash to the finish Mayne held off Tom Lorenz to take the victory. Freeman was third, followed by Tony Batt and Dave Peoples.
