Kirkland Tops Modified Martahon at Devil's Bowl Mesquite, TX (May 19, 2001) - Randy Kirkland survived a lengthy USA modified feature that saw the caution flag wave seven times on his way to his first victory of the season Saturday night at Devil’s Bowl Speedway. Brandon Hull topped the USA sprints, also for his first win this year. Repeat winners included Thomas Weeks in street stocks and Skip O’Neal took his third late model win of the season.Starting on the outside of the third row, Kirkland had a front row seat when polesitter Rick Preddy got tagged and spun in turn two on the opening lap of the USA modified 15-lapper. Everyone kept going, but the caution flew as the first lap was complete to slow the field. Kirkland’s high line around the cars bunched on the bottom put him second behind Rusty Trevathan. Two more multi-car crashes and spins slowed the field as the race seemed to be one of attrition, the last car running would win. Kirkland got a good restart in the Baber’s Garage Nr. 77 to pass Trevathan as the fourth lap was complete, but never got ahead.. The caution flew six times before the first five laps were complete, taking over 20 minutes. Rowdy Starnes was up to challenge Kirkland as the top 22 cars of the 42 modifieds in the pits finally got a couple green flag laps under their belts. The final yellow of the race flew just past the halfway mark. With a warning from promoter Lanny Edwards that the next yellow would bring out the checkered flag, the modifieds were approaching the 30 minute time limit, the racers finally figured out the track. Kirkland pulled a couple car lengths ahead of Starnes as a four-wide pack battled for third. The track was dry, forcing Kirkland to pick his way through the corners, low in one and two, high in three and four. The cars racing for third caught the leaders as Kirkland took the checkered flag by four car lengths. Starnes slowed with a flat in the final corner, but managed second, followed by Dale Wester, Timberwolf Hard Charger award winner Tom Lorenz and Tony Batt. Kevin Rowland nipped Starnes at the line, but was two laps down after being involved in an early race crash. Rick McCommas and Jerry Cowart won the twin B mains and Kevin DeLashaw, Mike Goodson, Starnes, Darrell Hathcock and Ronnie Welborn won the heat races. Brandon Hull charged around the outside to grab the lead as the green flag fell on the USA sprint car 20 lap feature. A yellow and a red for Chad Cavett’s flip flew before the first lap was complete, forcing restarts. Hull finally took the lead from polesitter Larry Long on the third start. Two other cautions slowed the race when inexperienced drivers were unable to stay on a rapidly drying track. Hull was fast, and handled lapped traffic without a problem as he raced around the half-mile oval. He easily claimed the win, leading every lap of the feature. Long was a steady second. He closed up when Hull slowed for lapped traffic, but could not find room on a one groove track to attempt a pass. Dennis Welch was third followed by Eric Payne and points leader Skip Wilson. Hull, Payne and Long won their heats. The weather played havoc with track conditions Saturday night. The track dried quickly late in the evening, making it very difficult for several drivers. It was very slick early when the late models took to the track for the first heat races. Cautions and crashes damaged several cars, including ripping a fender from Skip O’Neal’s Urban Fire Protection/ Wes Lockridge & Associates Contractors Nr. 8. Starting ninth in the 15-lap feature, O’Neal had to work past last week’s winner Steve Trevathan to take second on the fifth lap. After winning his heat and the dash, Trevathan was aiming for the Park Auto Sales Sweep Bonus, but could not claim the cash. O’Neal got past every car on the track except Harry Hronas. He was close behind Hronas for most of the race, but could not make the pass for the lead until after the checkered flag fell. Hronas was under weight at the scales, and O’Neal took his third win of the season. Trevathan, Jimmy Quick, Jr. Stephen Manning and Tom Lorenz rounded out the top five. Quick won the other heat race. The excitement started early in the street stock feature. Polesitter Johnny Points was out front until the cars exited turn four on the first lap. He got a little sideways and Butch Rymers charged past into the lead. Unfortunately, Rymers car had its rear bumper knocked loose during the encounter. When the first yellow flag flew on the fifth lap, officials looked at Rymers car and determined the bumper needed to be repaired before he could continue to race. Trandell White took over the lead of the race, but lasted only a lap before Mike Meeks, Jr. grabbed the top spot. Meeks was strong, but Weeks was coming. Starting outside the seventh row in the Jerry Salinas / D. Smith Nr. 5X, he moved into the top five by the halfway mark. After eight laps, Weeks was right on Meeks rear bumper. He studied the leader’s line for a couple laps and went side by side in turn three to take the lead as the white flag flew. Meeks tried to retake the lead, pulling alongside in turn two and turn four on the final lap, but Weeks pulled away on the straight to take the win by a fender. Third at the checkered flag was Mike Walls, followed by Tim McManus and Ricky Wycough. Richard Miller, Rymers and Frank Shafer won the heat races.
