Huddleston Flies to Sprint Win At Devil’s Bowl Mesquite, TX (June 2, 2001) - Bobby Huddleston took off on the start of the USA sprint car feature Saturday night at Devil’s Bowl Speedway and never looked back on his way to his first win this year. Randy Kirkland topped a competitive USA modified main. Jimmy Quick, Jr. avoided late race crashes to win the late model main. Mike Meeks, Jr. took the street stock victory.Huddleston was behind the wheel of the Wells Racing Engines / Commercial Music Nr. 39 for only the second time this year when he took the green flag in his heat race. Quickly pulling away, Huddleston easily won the heat race. His low point average put him on the pole for the 20-lap USA sprint car feature. He brought the field down to the start at a slow pace and accelerated to take the lead before the first turn. Justin Zimmerman moved into second and tried to stay with Huddleston as the other cars raced three and four wide behind them. Outside front row starter Dan Burk was fourth after the second lap when his car slipped on the second turn. As he recovered, Matt Clevenger had to hit the brakes to avoid Burk. Points leader Skip Wilson also had to slow suddenly, and Keith Walker had no place to go. He jumped Wilson’s rear tire, sending Walker’s Leo Walker Paint & Body Nr. 52W flipping down the back straight. This was the second straight week Walker ended up upside down. Huddleston was happy with his very fast car, but several other drivers made significant changes during the red flag. The track was quickly dried by the down force of 20 sprint cars, but Huddleston held his car perfectly balanced on the rim as he roared around the half-mile clay oval. He was over a quarter-lap ahead of a tight battle for second when the yellow flag flew at the halfway mark. Another quick caution kept the field, with Brian Harvill second right on Huddleston’s rear bumper for the restart. Harvill has his hands full with a battle from Dennis Welch and Bob Ewell while Huddleston again pulled away. Ewell picked his spot to pass under the other drivers and moved up to second. Huddleston was perfect to the checkered flag with Ewell claiming second, followed by Harvill, Welch and Jeff Liles. Harvill and Welch won the other heat races. Quick did not have a good heat race in the J-N Fence / Chaco Investments Nr. 121 late model. That put him on the outside of the sixth row as the green flag dropped on the 15-lap feature. Two cautions in the opening laps scrambled the field and send a couple top cars to the pits. Keith Darrow set the pace and despite a very close battle with Stephen Manning and Ron Lane, Darrow stayed out front until a 12th lap caution. Cars slipping on the restart mixed up the field with Steve Trevathan moving up to second with Quick third. On the 13th lap, Trevathan made a run on Darrow low coming out of turn two. The two made contact as Darrow tried to hold Trevathan back. As Darrow spun, Quick shot around the outside and grabbed the lead. Quick stayed out front to the checkered flag, followed by Trevathan. Jeff Jones made his first run in a late model profitable with his third place finish, followed by points leader Ronnie Long and Britt Ables. Brad Zimmerman and Manning won the heat races. When polesitter Marc Madison was unable to start the USA modified main, the inside row moved up, giving Randy Kirkland the 7th starting position for the 15-lapper. Ken Weaver paced the first lap, with David Gailley leading the second time past the flag stand. Kirkland took the lead on the next lap. The Baber’s Garage Nr. 77 was perfect with Kirkland right on track every lap. Out front he avoided the crashes that made much of the field look like a rolling junkyard. After the second of four cautions, it was Kirkland out front, with Rowdy Starnes and Jody Mayne right on his rear bumper. The trio raced around the track just inches apart in a great battle. Mayne took the runner-up spot on the 12th lap, and Starnes dropped out after 13 laps with a flat. Kirkland held off Mayne as they took the checkered flag, followed by Ronnie Welborn, Tony Batt and Rick McCommas. Welborn, Darrell Hathcock and Kirkland won the heat races. Hathcock won the trophy dash. McCommas run from 16th at the start to fifth earned him the TimberWolf Hard Charger award. Meeks started the John & Nancy Hollaway / Gary’s Machine Shop Nr. 37 on the inside of the fourth row in the street stock 12-lap feature. Johnny Points took the lead at the drop of the green flag and pulled away. The battle for second involved ten cars that raced four wide. As the race continued without a caution flag, Meeks emerged relatively undamaged from the battle to take second place on the ninth lap. As Points tried to get past lapped cars, Meeks closed up and challenged for the lead on the back straight just before the white flag flew. Points forced Meeks to the infield, but Meeks came back and pulled past to lead as the white flag flew. More contact in turn two on the final lap send Points crashing into an infield marker tire, and allowed Tim McManus to pass Meeks. McManus took the checkered flag, but a post race inspection found an out of specification cam in his car. Meeks claimed the win, with Frank Shafer second, followed by Chet Chambers, Richard Miller and Thomas Weeks. Shafer and Pat Walls won the heat races.
