Kirkland Tops Modified For Third Time at Devil's Bowl Mesquite, TX (June 9, 2001) - Randy Kirkland captured his third USA modified feature win of the season Saturday night at Devil’s Bowl Speedway. USA sprint car champion Kevin Ramey also claimed his third feature this year. Harry Hronas topped the late models and Butch Rymers claimed his second street stock main.Kirkland put the Baber’s Garage Nr. 77 in victory lane for the second straight week after a tight race long battle with points leader Tom Lorenz and defending USA modified champion Rowdy Starnes. Starting on the outside of the fifth row, Kirkland had to dodge a couple early cautions as Rick Preddy set the pace for the first lap, Gary Lowe led the next lap and Clyde Dunn, Jr. took the lead on the third lap. The drivers were racing three wide for position as Kirkland moved up to challenge Dunn on the fourth lap. Jody Mayne and Steve Miller made it a four car battle for the lead. Dunn lost traction in the second turn on the seventh lap and spun. Kirkland was able to dive under Dunn’s car, but Mayne and Miller were collected in the crash. That put Kirkland out front for the restart with Lorenz and Starnes right behind him. The final half of the race was a tight battle with Lorenz and Starnes trading position, then making a run on Kirkland. Despite constant challenges for the lead Kirkland held off Lorenz and took the victory. Rick McCommas won the B main, went to the pits after the first caution with a flat tire, but came back and climbed to third at the checkered flag. For the second straight week, McCommas earned the TimberWolf Hard Charger award. Tony Batt and David Gailley were fourth and fifth. Miller returned from the mid-race crash to finish fourth, but was light at the scales. Starnes suffered a right rear flat on the final lap and fell to sixth. Lorenz, Starnes, Batt and Dale Wester won the heat races. Ramey was on the inside of the eighth row as the green flag dropped on the 20-lap USA sprint car main. Claude Estes, Jr. paced the opening laps, with Jimmy Goodwin taking the lead on the third trip around the half-mile clay oval. The track was fast and the cars were flying around the rim until the eighth lap when Chad Cavett, Estes and Larry Long came out of turn four three wide. Estes and Long were pinched together. The contact send Long flipping hard down the front straight. The car was almost destroyed but Long climbed out uninjured. The red flag gave everyone a chance to adjust their cars, and Ramey got the Quik Couriers / Burkham Construction Nr. 7M perfect. Goodwin led the field to the green flag as the race resumed. As he charged around the track, Ramey quickly moved from fifth to second. As Goodwin caught lapped traffic, Ramey was able to close up to his rear bumper. They raced side by side several times before Ramey went low in the fourth turn to pull into the lead on the 14th lap. Ramey continued to work lapped traffic and took the victory. Skip Wilson moved up into second with three laps to go, leaving Goodwin third, followed by Paul White and Brandon Hull. George White won his heat and the dash, while Goodwin and Matt Clevenger won the other heat races. Hronas took the lead on the late model 15-lapper when he charged past early leader Bubba Sterry on a second lap restart. Quickly pulling away to a five car length lead, Hronas has a perfect track for the Performance Auto Supply / First State Bank of Mesquite Nr. 92. Late model points leader Ronnie Long moved into second on the tenth lap, The battle for third was three and four cars wide. Hronas stayed out front, never giving Long a change to close and challenge for the lead. He took the checkered flag with a comfortable margin over Long. Ron Lane claimed third, followed by Jimmy Quick, Jr. and Steve Trevathan fourth and fifth. Hronas and Lane won the heats. As 24 street stocks took the green flag, they raced three wide through the first two corners before Pat Walls pulled into the lead. Rymers started his Shipp Rebuilders / Salomon Grey Financial Nr. 22 on the outside of the third row. He moved up to fourth when the first yellow flag of the race flew on the third lap. On the restart he moved past the other cars to take the lead. Rymers easily pulled away from a multi-car battle for second until the final caution flew as the white flag was coming out. In the two lap dash to the checkered flag, Rymers had to hold off a challenge from Mike Walls and Ricky Wycough before claiming the win. Mike Meeks, Jr. and Frank Shafer rounded out the top five. Rymers, Thomas Weeks and Michael Murphy won the heat races.
