Victories Earn Points Lead at Devil's Bowl Mesquite, TX (June 16, 2001) - Rowdy Starnes took the points lead of the very competitive USA modifieds with his third win of the season at Devil’s Bowl Speedway Saturday night. Thomas Weeks regained the points lead of the street stocks with his third feature win. Harry Hronas won his second straight late model feature at Devil’s Bowl Speedway Saturday night. Chad Cavett’s USA sprint car victory was also his second of the season.Starnes started the Millen Oil / Starnes Trucking Nr. 50X on the outside of the seventh row as 20 USA modifieds took the green flag for their 15-lap feature. Jay Miller took the early lead as the entire field jammed up behind Greg Teske who got sideways on the front straight as the green flag dropped. Everyone kept going and as the cars strung out down the back straight, Starnes moved around the outside to ninth. Jay Miller pulled away from a close battle for second by a half-dozen car lengths. Steve Miller claimed second and Starnes worked through the pack to third by the time the first caution of the race flew on lap five. Starnes went to the outside on the restart to pull even with Jay Miller. They raced side by side for a full lap before Starnes took the lead. Richard McGibboney followed Starnes into second. The caution flew a lap later. When the green flag came out again, Starnes was able to pull slightly ahead of McGibboney. He stayed out front until the final laps when McGibboney closed up on his rear bumper. The raced inches apart as Starnes held on for the win. Bobby Ruffin climbed up to third at the finish, with Randy Kirkland and Rick McCommas rounding out the top five. Gailley, Starnes, Ruffin and Tony Batt claimed the heat race wins, with Tom Lorenz winning the B main. Starnes won the TimberWolf Hard Charger award in his run from 14th to first. Weeks also took the green flag from the outside of the seventh row in the street stock 12-lapper. Richard Riley took the lead in the third turn to pace the opening lap. The yellow flew seconds later. On the restart, Jimmy Luker got the worst of a crash as the cars raced four wide through the first two turns. Pat Walls took the lead on the next restart, only to spin on the fourth lap. Frank Shafer took over the top spot with Weeks having moved the Bobby Duncan / Jerry Salinas Nr. 5X up to third. On the sixth lap Weeks went low in turn two and claimed the lead. A spin on the eighth lap bunched the field. On the restart, contact in the first turn send Richard Miller sideways. Richard Riley collied with Miller and both cars went flipping off the top of turn two. Both drivers emerged from their badly damaged cars shaken but unhurt from the grinding crash. The three lap dash to the finish after the red flag saw Weeks holding the lead by a fender as the leaders finished three wide. Shafer was second, followed by Mike Meeks, Jr., Ricky Wycough and Tim McManus. Mike Walls, Richard Miller and McManus won the street stock heat races. After the carnage of the earlier races, Cavett’s flag to flag run in the Infinity Security Systems / Soulman’s Bar-B-Que Nr. 9C was relatively calm. Pulling around polesitter Claud Estes on the opening lap, Cavett took off and left everyone in his wake. Cavett flew around the half-mile clay oval at top speed as drivers behind him had to battle through traffic on a rapidly drying track. Cavett caught the slowest cars on the eleventh lap and quickly moved past the lapped cars. The only caution of the race flew on the 14th lap as Jerry Pinckard stopped in turn four. Cavett lined up for the restart with the lapped car of Dan Burk between himself and second place Estes. Cavett pulled away as the green flag flew and charged unchallenged to the finish. Estes battled trying to pass Burk, surrendering second place to Greg Young and third to Bob Ewell. Estes was fourth at the finish, followed by Brian Harvill. Skip Wilson retained the points lead despite dropping out early. Cavett and Justin Zimmerman won the USA sprint car heat races. Hronas had a strange looking race car at the end of the late model 15-lapper. It was almost the only car in the field without major body damage. He started the First State Bank of Mesquite / Performance Auto Supply Nr. 92 on the inside of the third row. Bubba Sterry paced the opening lap, with Keith Darrow taking the lead in a three wide battle. On the fifth lap, Jeff Jones got tagged on the front straight, spinning right and left. Despite contact by several cars, only Jones had to stop. Though a lot of sheet metal had to be picked up off the track. On the restart, Darrow spun, collecting nine cars in the crash in turn two. Sterry retook the lead, only to spin into an infield tire on the sixth lap. Hronas slipped into the lead and never looked back. As Hronas steadily pulled away Tom Lorenz had to battle with Jones for the runner-up spot. Jones took the position as Lorenz faded late. Darrow climbed back to third, with points leader Ronnie Long and Steve Trevathan fourth and fifth. Britt Ables and Darrow won the heats with Darren Ellis winning the dash.
