Hall and Jones Claim First Wins at Devil's Bowl

Mesquite, TX (June 30, 2001) - The action was close all the way to the finish line as Chuck Hall captured his first street stock victory and Jeff Jones topped the late models for the first time Saturday night at Devil’s Bowl Speedway. Bobby Ruffin swept the USA modifieds. Skip Wilson claimed his second USA sprint feature win of the season.

Hall’s road to victory started on the outside of the second row as the green flag fell to start the street stock 12-lapper. The cars were three and four wide into the first turn, with Mark Reedy pulling into the lead as they charged down the back straight. Hall was second in the Speed Pro Signs Nr. 7 when the caution flew after the end of the first lap. Hall closed on Reedy and took the lead on the third lap. Frank Shafer took second on the next lap and began to challenge Hall. Shafer raced hard, pulling even with Hall a couple times, but could not make the pass. Points leader Tim McManus took over the second position on the ninth lap. He ran alongside Hall several times, but coming to the finish line it was Hall out front for his first win. Third was Reedy in his best finish at Devil’s Bowl, followed by Trandel White and Richard Miller. Shafer suffered a flat late in the race and fell to seventh. Still he took over second in the points race after Thomas Weeks fell out after contact on the first lap of the feature. Weeks and Shafer won the heat races.

Jones has been fast since taking over the First State Bank of Mesquite / Performance Auto Supply Nr. 5J a month ago. When the late model feature started, Jeff McGibboney was the early leader, even though the race stopped almost immediately after three cars piled up in turn one. Back under green, McGibboney had his hands full holding off heat winner Keith Darrow and Jones in a three way battle for the lead. The yellow waved again when Brad Zimmerman lost his left front wheel. On the fifth lap restart, Jones flew around the outside of turns one and two to take the lead. He pulled away slightly but another caution on the ninth lap put everyone on his back bumper. Darrow got past McGibboney on the restart and stayed even with Jones. The pair raced hard around the half-mile oval, with Jones out front to win his first feature. Points leader Ronnie Long got past McGibboney for third on the last lap with Jimmy Quick, Jr. finishing fifth. Skip O’Neal won the other heat race.

Ruffin has been getting his Nr. 121 USA modified in shape for racing. He still did not have the right side of the car painted Saturday night. After winning his heat race and the dash, he stood to claim the Parks Auto Sales Sweep bonus if he could win the feature. Starting inside the fifth row, he got a break when Steve Sickels pulled over right before the green flag. That moved the inside row up as the green flag fell. Jay Miller, who also won his heat, pulled into the lead and left the battle behind him. Miller pulled away for a ten car length lead as Ruffin worked up to third. He took second on a ninth lap restart after the first caution of the race. Two other quick cautions let Ruffin study Miller’s line, and after the second caution, he dove hard into the first turn to take the lead by sliding up infront of Miller. Mike Goodson, who won the other heat race, moved past Miller on the eleventh lap, but surrendered the position to Tom Lorenz a lap later. Lorenz lost his chance to pass Ruffin when he slid over the cushion in turn two on the 12th lap. Ruffin took the win and the bonus by ten car lengths. Lorenz was second and Goodson third. Rick McCommas took fourth from Miller on the last lap. Bobby Malchus won the B main. Lorenz claimed his fourth TimberWolf hard charger award.

Wilson has led the USA sprint car points race for most of the year, and Saturday’s victory added to that margin. Bill Harvill took the lead at the start and pulled away on a clear track. The red flag flew when Justin Zimmerman flipped in the fourth turn. Second running Ricky Summers and third place Steven Davis were unable to restart, moving Wilson up to second in the Texas Rebuilders / Bubba’s Plumbing Nr. 65. Harvill was fast, giving Wilson no opportunity to pass as they raced around the track. Wilson made his move as the 20-lap feature wound down. Pulling even with Harvill a couple times, Wilson took the lead as the white flag flew. Glenn Stubblefield, Jr. took second, followed by Bobby Huddleston, Greg Young and Brian Harvill after Bill Harvill slipped in turn four on the final lap. Bill Harvill and Zimmerman won the heats.
