Erwin Returns After Flip Last Week to Win Sprints

Mesquite, TX (July 14, 2001) - Brandon Erwin went home last week with a broken race car after a flip in the USA sprint car feature. This Saturday night, Erwin worked his way to the front and took the lead to win his second USA sprint car feature of the season. Richard McGibboney topped the very competitive USA modified main. Jeff Jones claimed the late model win and Frank Shafer won the street stock feature.

Keith Walker took off at the start of the USA sprint car 20-lapper from the outside of the front row. Erwin quickly settled into second. As the leaders flew around the half-mile clay oval, they quickly caught slower cars. Walker lost much of his lead when he slipped over the cushion on the ninth lap while passing a slower car. The race for second was beginning to heat up with Chad Cavett closing on Erwin when the first yellow flag of the race fles on the 15th circuit. Brandon Hull spun just out of turn two. Everyone was able to miss the stopped car. The caution was not what Walker wanted to see. He was in his groove as the race wound down. After the green flag flew, Walker carried too much speed into turn four and spun. Erwin was past in a flash. One the final restart, Walker pulled away on a clear track to take his second victory of the season, followed by Cavett, Jimmy Goodwin, Jeff Liles and Paul White. Cavett, Erwin and Ricky Summers won the heat races.

Nineteen USA modifieds roared to the green flag with Charles Lasater emerging from the opening lap mayhem to take the early lead. Rowdy Starnes hopes to take the points lead this week were dashed when he dropped out after a third lap crash. Lasater paces the restart, but Marc Madison quickly took over the lead. McGibboney had climbed from eighth at the start to third by the time the caution flew. He was second on the next lap. Carefully tracking down Madison, McGibboney made the pass on the 11th lap and began to pull away. Dale Wester moved up to second but could not catch McGibboney’s Baber’s Garage / Stan Hopkins Company Nr. 19. McGibboney easily led Wester under the checkered flag. Randy Kirkland, Jody Mayne and Rick McCommas rounded out the top five. Tom Lorenz, Wester and Jerry Cowart won the heat races. Dink McCullough passed 12 cars on his run from 19th to seventh to earn the Timber Wolf Hard Charger Award.

Bubba Sterry set the early pace as the late models started their 15-lapper. An early caution gave Jeff McGibboney a chance to shoot around the outside and grab the lead. While McGibboney fought off challenges for the lead, Brad Zimmerman was moving up. When the second caution flew on the sixth lap, Zimmerman was in the preferred position on the outside to fly around the top of turns one and two and grab the lead. Jeff Jones was working his way up into the top five in the First State Bank of Mesquite/ Performance Auto Supply Nr. 5J. When the caution flew on the tenth lap, Jones was third, and he rode the top of the first two turns into the lead as Zimmerman tried to hold off challenges on the bottom of the track. Zimmerman soon faded as Jones built a small lead. Skip O’Neal and Mike Jones were battling for second on the last lap when they made contact. That allowed McGibboney to charge past and take second a the the finish line. Harry Hronas was third, followed by Jones and Ronnie Long. Britt Ables, Hronas and Jimmy Quick, Jr. won the heats with Hronas winning the dash.

A full field of street stocks charged four wide under the green flag. Michael Grubbs paced the opening lap with Chuck Hall taking over a lap later. The first caution of the race flew on the fourth lap when Butch Rymers spun in turn two. Steve Porter could not avoid the stopped car resulting in a big crash. Starting on the outside of the seventh row, Shafer missed the early action and quickly took the lead after the restart. He pulled away in the Ben Abbett / Trophy Trucks of Texas Nr. 84, quickly lapping slower cars and taking the victory. Chuck Hall was second, followed by Mike Walls, Mike Meeks, Jr. and Ricky Wycough. Thomas Weeks, Butch Rymers and Mike Walls won the heats.
