Fifth ASCS Outlaw sprinters packed the Devil’s Bowl pit area as Rick Williams of Castro Valley, Calif, got things started with a victory in the first heat. The other heat races were won by Bobby Huddleston, Grand Prairie, Jan Howard, Byhalia, Miss., Eric Sandage, Alexander, Ark., Wright, Hooks, Texas; and Robert Sellers, Mustang, Okla.

Kevin Ramey of Fort Worth passed Glen Passmore, Pryor, Okla., on the ninth lap to win the first B main. George White, also of Fort Worth, pulled past Mike Ward, Memphis, on the tenth lap to win the second B main.

When the green flag fell on the top 24 cars, Sellers pulled away front the pole position. Before he could lead the first lap the red flag flew when Eric Sandage jumped the back tire of another car and took a hard flip down the back straight. After Sandage walked away from the damaged race car and the track was cleared, Sellers again jumped out ahead of the field and pulled away on a clear track. Tempatures near 100 during the day and a stiff southerly breeze combined to dry the track, making it critical for the racers to carefully control the throttle. Wright started eighth in the Pannell Motorsports Nr. 9. He battled his way through the pack with Wayne Johnson, Oklahoma City. They were up to fourth and fifth when the yellow flag fled on the fourth lap, and again a lap later. Sellers pulled away on each restart as the cars battled behind him for position. Wright got past Johnson in turn four on the ninth lap to take second place. A single car spin brought out the caution on the 11^th lap. Sellers got a run on the restart and pulled away by several car lengths.

Wright began to close the gap a couple laps later. As the 14^th lap ended, Sellers got wide coming out of turn four and that was all the opportunity that Wright needed to grab the lead. Wright was the master as the leaders worked through lapped traffic. A late race caution on the 22^nd lap bunched the field, and gave Johnson a chance to pull past Sellers into second. Kevin Ramey moved up quickly in the final laps to claim third. Sellers held fourth with Tim Crawley, Mablevale, Ark., claiming the fifth position.

Charles Lasater set the early pace, but Richard McGibboney was soon battling for the lead. McCommas moved up and joined the leaders on the third lap. On the fifth trip around the Devil’s Bowl oval, the leaders were three wide in the third turn, with McGibboney on the outside. He got pushed off the turn and soon dtopped out McCommas took the lead and tried to pull away in the B&B Sandblasting/ Jimmy Allard Racing Engines Nr. 39. Kevin Rowland worked his way up from starting 16^th to take second on the fifth lap. While Rowland and Dale Wester chased McCommas at the front of the field, the cars were racing three and four wide behind them. Rowland managed to challenge McCommas several times in the late laps of the feature, but had to settle for second at the checkered flag. Wester dropped out on the 14^th lap. Rowdy Starnes moved up to third, with Tom Lorenz and Steve Miller rounding out the top five. McGibboney, Lorenz and Billy Fronterhouse won the heat races. Rowland took the TimberWolf Hard Charger Award in his run from 16^th to second.
