Summers Takes Sprint Win at Devil’s Bowl

Mesquite, TX (July 21, 2001) - Ricky Summers captured his first USA sprint car feature win of the season Saturday night at Devil’s Bowl Speedway. Bobby Ruffin topped the USA modifieds. Ronnie Long added to his late model points lead with a victory Saturday night. Thomas Weeks survived the street stock feature for the win.

Summers started the 20-lap USA sprint car main on the outside of the second row. He quickly moved to the front of the field. The red flag flew on the eighth lap when Claud Estes made contact with the slowing car of Chad Cavett. The impact sent Estes flipping. One the restart Summers set the pace, with Jerry Pinckard and Justin Zimmerman following. Paul White pulled past Glen Stubblefield, Jr. for fourth as the green flag flew. Summers set a strong pace to the checkered flag in the Nr. 99 for his first win this year at Devil’s Bowl. Bob Ewell worked through the field in the last half of the race to claim second, followed by Pinckard and Paul White in third and fourth. Zimmerman held on for fifth at the checkers. Charlie Brown, Pinckard and Estes won the heats.

Ronnie Long continued to set the pace for the late model class this season with strong consistent runs every week. Saturday he took the lead from Brad Zimmerman midway through the 15-lap feature. Despite a red flag to work on some of the track lighting, Long was able to charge ahead at every opportunity in the Nr. 28. Harry Hronas fought for position with Long early in the race as they worked their way to the front. Long however stayed out front once he got the lead and never looked back. Hronas had to settle for second, with Skip O’Neal in third. Keith Darrow and Jeff Jones rounded out the top five. Zimmerman and Chuck Beusch won the heat races.

The USA modified feature featured a lot of good close racing in the first part of the race. Bobby Ruffin made a charge from 12th on the starting grid to first, with Jody Mayne right behind. The tenth lap was the troublemaker Saturday night. Steve Miller got into the front straight wall, bringing out the caution. On the restart, six cars piled up in turn two, including the third, fourth and fifth place cars. Once again the green flag flew, only to be replaced by the yellow before the lap was completed. Miller and Jeff Welborn got tangled together in turn four. With the field cut almost in half by the wrecks, Ruffin finally led a green flag lap and charged to the finish without a serious challenge. Richard McGibboney was able to avoid serious damage in the tenth lap pileup. He came back and took second after a close battle with Mayne. Tom Lorenz and Randy Kirkland rounded out the top five. Ruffin topped his heat race, as did Doug Smith and Frank Rose. Ruffin’s run past 11 cars in his victory earned the TimberWolf Hard Charger Award.

The wildest race of the night was the 12-lap street stock feature. Looking almost like a demolition derby, the race did not even get one lap completed before the yellow flag flew. Butch Rymers led the first lap, but a car bumper on the track and other debris sent him to the pits early. The constant yellow flags allowed Rymers to return, but the constant beating and banging sent several of the top cars to the pits. Tim McManus and Frank Shafer were out early. Seven cautions in the first five laps cut the field in half before there were was finally green flag racing. Thomas Weeks came from 13th on the starting grid in the Bobby Duncan / Jerry Salinas Nr. 5X to lead the final green flag laps Weeks captured the win with Mike Walls second. Trandel White, Ricky Wycough and Chuck Hall rounded out the top five. Rymers post race antics earned him a vacation from racing for the rest of the season. Rymers, Hall and Tim McManus won the heat races.
