Zimmerman Takes First Sprint Win at Devil's Bowl Mesquite, TX (July 28, 2001) - Justin Zimmerman captured his first USA sprint car feature win at Devil’s Bowl Speedway Saturday night. Ronnie Long and Thomas Weeks made it two victories in a row in the late models and street stocks respectively. Jody Mayne came from the B main to win a rough USA modified main.Zimmerman has set the pace early in several USA sprint car features this season at Devil’s Bowl, but has always yielded the lead to more experienced drivers. Saturday night the young driver did not wait on anyone as he charged out front at the drop of the green flag. Zimmerman pulled away from the battle for second to a 20 car length lead. The other cars only got closer as Zimmerman encountered lapped traffic. When the yellow flag flew on the eighth lap, Zimmerman had two lapped cars between his ARA Graphics and Lettering / Zimmerman Construction Nr. 7J and the second place car of Charlie Brown. While Zimmerman pulled away on the restart, several cars jammed up trying to get past the lapped cars and improve their position. The yellow waved a lap later as Brown’s car came to a stop with the front end broken down after contact in the heavy racing. George White was up to second as the green flag flew. The action was close when third and fourth Ricky Summers and Kevin Ramey made contact in turn two on the 12th lap. Zimmerman again pulled away on the restart with the battle for second several car lengths back. The rest of the race was under green. Bob Ewell took second place on the 17th lap and narrowed Zimmerman’s lead from ten car lengths to three car lengths at the checkered flag. Third behind Ewell was Rawdy Hull, with Larry Long and Jerry Pinckard rounding out the top five. White, Ewell and Summers won the heat races. Ronnie Long padded his points lead in the late models with his second straight victory. Coming from ninth on the starting grid, Long moved up quickly on the outside. Steve Trevathan got sideways coming out of turn four on the second lap, blocking the track and almost half the field suffered damage in the resulting crash. Britt Ables paced the first four laps before Darren Ellis moved up to take the lead. Long battled for several laps with Harry Hronas, finally taking the runner-up spot in the 11th lap. Ellis was running the fastest line he could around the half-mile clay oval, while Long pushed his Nr. 28 to close the gap with Ellis. Long caught Ellis on the 13th lap. Long picked his spot and was able to pull even in turn two on the white flag lap and take the lead. Ellis had to settle for second with Hronas third. Jimmy Goodwin ran fourth, with Jimmy Quick, Jr. fifth. Ellis and Ron Lane won the heats. Mayne was the driver with the lucky breaks in the USA modified 15-lap feature. After a poor heat race, he had to win the B main to qualify for the feature. Scheduled to start 16th, Mayne moved up to 12th as several cars chose to move to the back of the field. Avoiding trouble was the key in the opening laps. Two cautions before the first lap was complete took out last week’s winner, Bobby Ruffin and Rowdy Starnes, second in points. Dink McCullough paced the first five laps before Clyde Dunn, Jr. took the lead. Mayne was running seventh when the third caution of the race flew on the ninth lap. Dunn tried to keep other drivers behind him on the restart which jammed up several cars. Mayne flew around the outside, then charged through the middle to grab second spot. With two laps to the finish, Dunn slipped out of the groove in turn two, letting Mayne charge past. He took the Tom Loving Leasing / White Rock Automotive Nr. 6L to the checkered flag. As Dunn had problems on the white flag lap, Rick McCommas took second, with Steve Sickels, McCullough and Doug Smith rounding out the top five. Mayne claimed the TimberWolf Hard Charger Award in his run from 12th to win. Jerry Cowart, Sickels and Steve Miller won the heats. Ruffin won the trophy dash. Weeks started the Bobby Duncan / Jerry Salinas Nr. 5X inside the seventh row as the street stocks took the green flag. David Phillips set the pace from the start while Weeks quickly moved to second by the fourth lap. Only one caution slowed the race. Phillips maintained his pace until Weeks got a run on the inside of the back straight on the tenth lap. Richard Miller moved up to second at the finish, followed by Chuck Hall, Phillips and Frank Shafer. Mike Meeks, Jr., Hall and Weeks won the heat races.
