Young Snatches Victory in Final Turn at Devil's Bowl Mesquite, TX (August 25, 2001) - Greg Young slipped under Rowdy Hull in the final turn to win Saturday night’s USA sprint car feature at Devil’s Bowl Speedway. Richard Miller claimed his initial street stock victory at Devil’s Bowl. Tom Lorenz worked through a tight USA modified field to take his third win of the season. Darren Ellis topped his third late model main.Polesitter Keith Walker took off at the start of the 20-lap USA sprint car main and pulled away outside front row starter Rowdy Hull. Young, who is second in season points, started on the outside of the sixth row. He moved into the top five by the fourth lap and continued to close in on the leaders. The only time Walker’s lead diminished was when he lapped slower cars. Everything was going his way until the 14th lap when Walker hit a spot in turn two dried by the 100 degree temperatures and night of racing. Walker spun, surrendering the lead. Hull was second at that point, and inherited the lead. Young was up to third in the Mack’s Auto Service / VFR Nr. 9. At the drop of the green flag, Hull took off, leaving Young to chase him down. With two laps to go, they were a car length apart. As the white flag flew, they were side by side. Hull had a better run through turns one and two, but Young ran right around the bottom of turns three and four to pull ahead for the final 100 yards of the race. The victory was Young’s second of the season. Hull’s second was his best run of the year. Third most of the race was Brian Harvill, followed by Justin Zimmerman and Skip Wilson. Walker, Young and Jimmy Goodwin won the heats. Brian Pinckard was not injured after flipping his sprinter in turn one during his heat race. Richard Miller did not celebrate his first win at Devil’s Bowl until after his street stock passed a post race inspection. Saturday night he started the Kinney’s Transmission / Jeanie’s Used Auto Parts Nr. 34X on the inside of the fifth row. Jimmy Luker paced the first two laps, including restarts after three cautions. Miller carefully avoided the crashes and pulled into the lead on the third lap. After that the rest of the cars needed binoculars to see Miller’s car as he steadily pulled away to win by almost 20 car lengths. Though his car was strong, the secret to his dominating win was getting clear of the three and four wide racing for position in the field. Trophy dash winner Michael Murphy was second for the latter half of the race, with B main winner, and points leader Thomas Weeks third at the finish. Second in points Tim McManus was right behind in fourth with Pat Walls fifth. Chuck Hall, Johnny Points and Tony Ruyle won heats. A field of 33 USA modifieds and the inverted point average system put points leader Tom Lorenz on the inside of the ninth row as the top 24 cars took the green flag. Pole sitter Ricky Stapleton took off at the drop of the green and easily pulled away to a comfortable lead. Despite an early caution, Stapleton had no trouble staying out front. On the sixth lap he slowed in the second turn and collected the second place car of Tad Kimbrough. The both returned to the race at the back of the field. Clyde Dunn, Jr. took over the lead. Rowdy Starnes, who started 19th after winning the B main, was fifth on the restart and Lorenz was ninth. Starnes got a good run up the outside to take second, and pass Dunn for the lead on the tenth lap. Lorenz also went to the outside to take second. He raced the Smiley’s Racing Products Nr. 84 side by side with Starnes to take the lead on the 12th lap. Starnes did not give up and almost got past Lorenz in the final turn, but had to settle for second. Starnes earned the TimberWolf Hard Charger Award with his run from 19th to second. Third with a strong run in the top five all race was Doug Smith, followed by Ronnie Welborn and Jerry Cowart. Stapleton, Dunn, Mike Goodson and Jay Miller won the heats. Ellis came from the fourth row in the Quaker State / Marshall’s RV Nr. 2 to pass early late model leader Steve Trevathan on the eighth lap. Only one caution slowed the race as Ellis chased down Trevathan. After taking the lead, Ellis pulled away to win by ten car lengths over Jimmy Goodwin. Ronnie Long padded his points lead with his third place run, followed by Skip O’Neal and Jimmy Quick, Jr. Goodwin and Keith Darrow won the heats.
