Ramey and Starnes Take Sixth Wins of Season

Mesquite, TX (September 8, 2001) - Kevin Ramey claimed his sixth USA sprint car feature win of the 2001 racing season at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Saturday night. Rowdy Starnes also notched his sixth USA modified win, and took the points lead with the victory. Pat Walls captured his first street stock victory and Ronnie Long padded his late model points lead with his fourth win of the year.

Ramey has spent much of this season on the road with the ASCS tour, but Saturday night the three time defending sprint champion captured his sixth victory in ten races at Devil’s Bowl this year. Starting out side the seventh row in the Burkham Construction / Smiley’s Racing Products Nr. 7M, Ramey avoided a first lap flip in turn three by points leader Skip Wilson. Apparently hooking a rut in heavy traffic, Wilson took a couple quick rolls. He walked away from the crash, but for the second straight September lost the points lead. Jerry Bell led the first eight laps as Ramey worked his way to the front. Running low through turn three, Ramey passed Bell on the ninth lap and quickly pulled away to a ten car length lead. Bell, Bobby Huddleston and Greg Young battled for the runner-up spot as they worked their way through lapped traffic for the rest of the race. Young got past Bell on the 15th lap. His second place finish moved Young into the points lead, 55 points ahead of Wilson. Huddleston claimed third in the final laps. Behind fourth place Bell was Justin Zimmerman in fifth. Bell, Wilson and Brian Harvill won the heat races.

The USA modifieds charged down to the green flag, and everything went wrong. The front row did not come up to speed as the green flag dropped, Charles Lasater pulled into the lead. He got bumped in the back bumper sending his sideways across the track in front of the entire field. Cars piled into each other with Richard McGibboney getting the worst of the wreck. He was able to slow his car without much damage, but two other cars crashed hard into his stopped car, flipping McGibboney. Ten cars were involved in the crash, five knocked out of the race. When the green finally flew, Eddie Williams paced the first two laps, with Jody Mayne taking the top spot. Rowdy Starnes had missed the first wreck. After a mid-race caution, Starnes quickly took the lead. Starnes pulled away in the Starnes Trucking / Millen Oil Nr. 50X to take the checkered flag over a dozen car lengths ahead of second place Rick McCommas. Coming out of the tight battle for position, Ronnie Welborn claimed third by inches over fourth place Mayne. Frank Rose had his first top five finish. Jerry Cowart came from the B main, started 19th and passed 11 cars on his way to a eighth place finish to win the TimberWolf Hard Charger Award. He also ended up on the bottom of the initial wreck with a car stacked on top of his Nr. 6P modified. Thomas Blackwell won the B main. McGibboney, Frank Rose, Tom Lorenz and Clyde Dunn, Jr. won the heats. Dunn topped the dash. Points leader Lorenz suffered suspension damage in the initial crash and fell to 12th at the finish. That along with Starnes’ sixth win put Starnes in the points lead by 80 points.

Pat Walls came from the third row in the typical four wide first lap of the street stock 12-lap feature to take the lead as the first lap ended. Walls stayed out front for the entire distance. His only threat came in the late laps of the feature when Thomas Weeks caught up with Walls Nr. 39. Weeks is the street stock points leader with five feature wins this year. Walls was not intimidated by Weeks and kept the lead when Weeks made his bid for the top spot. Weeks crossed the finish line three car lengths behind Walls. Trandel White was third followed by Tim McManus. Andy Jones had his best finish at Devil’s Bowl with fifth place. Walls, Weeks and Walter Dorsett topped the heats.

Ronnie Long left no doubt of his determination to win the late model championship. Starting tenth he moved up to seventh on the first lap, fifth on the next circuit. While Britt Ables led the first four laps, Long moved into the top three. Skip O’Neal paced the field for three laps before Long won their spirited battle to take the lead. Pulling away from the rest of the field, Long easily took his fourth win, followed by O’Neal, Jimmy Goodwin, Darren Ellis and Ables. Ellis and O’Neal won the heat races.
