Zimmerman and Pinckard Take First Wins at Devil's Bowl Mesquite, TX (September 15, 2001) - Brad Zimmerman led every lap of the late model feature Saturday night at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on his way to his first win of the season. Jerry Pinckard ran away from the rest of the USA sprint car field to claim his first win of the year by almost a half a lap. Kevin Rowland took the lead late in the USA modified main for his third win and Chuck Hall claimed his fifth street stock main.Zimmerman showed up at Devil’s Bowl Saturday with a new paint scheme that represented the United States flag, without sponsor logos or decals on the Deaton Hair Designs/ Pro Muffler Nr. 11X. Though he has won four heat races and led several features this year, but never made it to victory lane. A brief rain shower just before the track opened, and light sprinkles up until the races started made the half-mile clay oval very tacky, and slippery in spots. Zimmerman had the right combination of setup and power. After winning his heat easily, he started the 15-lap feature on the outside of the front row. Zimmerman pulled easily into the lead and started to pull away. Steve Trevathan moved into second, but was unable to close the gap on Zimmerman. The race ran caution free to the checkered flag, with all but one car running at the checkered flag. The caution free race and different track conditions made it difficult for cars to move up. Zimmerman easily claimed the victory by ten car lengths over Trevathan. Britt Ables was third, followed by David Gailley and Darren Ellis. Scotty Cook won the other heat in his first trip to Devil’s Bowl this year. Pinckard also had the right combination of power and setup as he charged to the front of his heat race. Starting the 20-lap USA sprint car main on the outside of the fourth row, he quickly moved the Mopar powered Bid D Truck and Trailer Service Nr. 5 up to third. A caution for a fire on Charlie Brown’s car, slowed the field. Pinckard flew around the top of the first two turns on the restart and took the lead from Dan Burk. After that it was a race for second place. Pinckard steadily pulled away lap after lap. Despite another caution, Pinckard took the checkered flag half a lap ahead of the other cars. Glen Stubblefield, Jr. got past Jerry Bell on the final lap for second with Brandon Erwin fourth and Greg Young fifth. Larry Long and Edd French also won their heats and Dan Burk captured his first trophy dash. Hall and Jimmy Luker finished their heat race just inches apart. In the 12-lap street stock feature, it was Luker jumping out to an early lead while the rest of the cars raced three and four wide behind him. An eight car crash on the third lap slowed the race. Luker paced the restart, but Hall was up to fourth when the caution flew and quickly moved to second. On the fifth circuit, Hall claimed the lead. Despite heavy traffic late in the race, Hall easily took the Speed Pro Signs Nr. 7 to victory lane for the fifth time this year. Tim McManus worked his way through traffic to finish second, followed by Thomas Weeks. Luker was fourth, followed by Mark Reedy. Johnny Points, Mike Walls and Michael Murphy won the heat races. The USA modifieds could not finish their first lap without a pile-up for the second straight week. This time it was in turn three when two cars in the top five got together. Luckily no one got upside down and only two cars were knocked out in the crash. Jay Miller was in top form as he set the early pace. Rowland got a break by missing the early crashes. On a second lap restart, Rowland moved around the top to take second place. For ten laps Miller and Rowland battled for the top spot. Rowland pulled alongside several times, but Miller was always able to pull ahead coming out of turn four to lead each lap. Rowland finally got past on the back straight as the white flag was coming out. Miller tried to retake the lead on the last lap but had to settle for second behind Rowland’s Southwest Engines Nr. 41. Third was Jody Mayne with Jerry Cowart and Dave Peoples coming from the B main to finish fourth and fifth. Cowart won the TimberWolf Hard Charger Award for the second straight week by passing 14 cars in his run from 19th to 4th. Richard McGibboney won the B main while Rowland, Miller and Darrell Hathcock topped the heat races.
