Walker Claims USA Sprint Win at Devil’s Bowl Mesquite, TX (September 22, 2001) - Keith Walker scored his first USA sprint car win of the season Saturday night at Devil’s Bowl Speedway. Thomas Weeks topped the street stocks for the sixth time this year. Jody Mayne made his fifth trip to victory lane in his USA modified and Skip O’Neal won his fourth late model main.Walker started the Leo Walker Paint & Body Nr. 52W in the inside of the second row as 22 USA sprint cars took the green flag for their 20-lap main event. Bill Harvill grabbed the lead on the opening lap as a tight battle raged on the half-mile clay oval. Charlie Brown managed to get past Harvill to lead the fifth lap, only to drop out on the next circuit with mechanical problems. Walker got past Harvill and tried to pull away. As the feature continued without a caution, Walker was fast and maintained a perfect line. Rawdy Hull claimed the second spot and tried to catch Walker. Hull had to settle for second place as Walker had his best run of the year to take his first win at Devil’s Bowl. The second place finish was Hull’s best effort of the season. Skip Wilson moved up from 12th to third. His good finish moved him back into the race for the USA sprint car championship with only one week left in the season. Wilson is only 20 points behind leader Greg Young in the championship battle. Kevin Ramey and Larry Long rounded out the top five in the sprint car feature. Harvill, Walker and Hull won the sprint heat races. Weeks victory in the 12-lap street stock main, along with Tim McManus’ untimely flat tire pretty much locked up the championship for Weeks in his Bobby Duncan / Jerry Salinas Nr. 5X. Starting outside the seventh row, Weeks had to work his way to the front through the three and four wide pack of street stocks. Joe Crowder paced the first two laps before Mike Meeks, Jr. took over the top spot. Weeks moved up to second on the fifth lap and got past Meeks on the seventh lap. Three cautions in the last three laps kept Meeks close behind Weeks, but Weeks took the win by two car lengths. Danny Florence, Jimmy Luker and Chuck Hall rounded out the top five. Crowder, Meeks and Hall won the three street stock heat races. The USA modified 15-lap feature was exciting and disappointing. John Ewell paced the feature from start to finish, holding off strong challenges for the lead. The only problem was that Ewell’s car as a few pounds light at the scales after the race. That rules infraction dropped him to last place. Mayne started the Tom Loving Leasing / White Rock Automotive Nr. 6L on the outside of the seventh row. He was ninth after the first lap and moved into third after a lap six caution. Mayne got past Billy Carroll on the tenth lap. He chased Ewell to the checkered flag before being awarded the victory. Mayne’s run from 14th to first earned him his fourth TimberWolf Hard Charger award of the season. Points leader Rowdy Starnes moved up to take second in the last two laps. Richard McGibboney claimed third ahead of Tom Lorenz and Billy Carroll. Starnes captured the B main, while Ewell, Dave Peoples and Charles Lasater topped the heat races. Starnes leads Lorenz by 150 points with one night left in the championship season. O’Neal took a competitive late model feature win. Ronnie Warman led the first two laps before Britt Ables took over the top spot. Warman and last week’s winner Brad Zimmerman tangled on the sixth lap to bring out the yellow flag. O’Neal had moved up to second in the Urban Fire Protection / Wes Lockridge & Associated Construction Nr. 8. Ables held the lead, keeping O’Neal behind him, until the next yellow flew on the 12th lap. On the restart, Ables went high in turn two and fell to the back of the field. O’Neal fought off challenges from Jeff McGibboney in the final laps to take the win. Points leader Ronnie Long padded his substantial lead with his third place finish. Chuck Beusch and Harry Hronas were fourth and fifth. Ables and Zimmerman won the heat races. There will be one more night of races before the champions are named, next Saturday at Devil’s Bowl.
