Wright Shows the Way at Devil's Bowl Mesquite, TX (October 6, 2001) - Gary Wright grabbed the lead in traffic and charged to win Saturday night’s 8th Annual O’Reilly Devil’s Bowl Nationals main event for the ASCS Outlaw Sprint Cars. Randy Kirkland led every lap of the companion USA modified main. After the disappointment of rain forcing the cancellation of Friday night’s program, Saturday was a bright sunny day and 54 ASCS Outlaw Sprint Cars filled the Devil’s Bowl pit area. Wayne Johnson of Oklahoma City in the F&J Construction / Wesmar Racing Engines Nr. 29 had the benefit of drawing a high number. The track got faster as time trials progressed, and Johnson set the mark for the evening with a lap of 15.614 seconds. With the fastest five cars in each heat race inverted, Johnson lined up fifth in the first heat. Johnson managed to move up to third in the eight lap heat race, the final transfer spot for the A main. Ahead of Johnson, Eric Payne, Garland and Kevin Ramey, Fort Worth battled side by side for the lead with Payne winning the heat. Larry Neighbors, Oklahoma City easily won the second heat. Other heat race winners were Mitchell Moore, Edgerton, Kan., Terry Gray, Bartlett, Tenn., Jan Howard, Byhalia, Miss. and James Shoun, Oklahoma City. The third heat was a key race when Zac Chappell, Talala, Okla. took the green flag. That gave him enough points to lock up the 2001 ASCS National Championship. Chappell finished third in his heat to qualify for the feature. With 18 cars qualified for the A, there were two B mains with 18 cars scheduled in each. Again moving to the front was critical, because only the top three cars would advance to the A feature. Garry Lee Maier, Cimmaron, Kan. jumped out to the early lead in the first B main, followed by Toby Brown, Carthage, Mo. and Edd French, Keller. Those three stayed out front to the checkered flag, though Robert Sellers, Mustang, Okla. challenged French for a few laps after a mid race red flag. J.P Bailey of Collinsville, Okla. flipped in the third turn in an incident that took out two other cars. Bailey was not injured. Scott Box of Albuquerque, N.M. got the jump from the outside of the front row and pulled ahead of Michael Dupuy, Amite, La. to lead all 15 laps of the second B main. One caution slowed the race. That did not slow the leading pair, but was a good break for Pete Butler, Mablevale, Ark. Up to fifth place, closing up the pack helped Butler move into fourth. He started closing in on Jason Martin, Liberal, Kan. for the final transfer spot. Butler and Martin went side by side a couple times in the final three laps. Butler made a final run through the final turn and edged ahead of Martin to take third by inches The top six drivers on time, who qualified for the feature, were inverted for the start of the 25-lap main. On the front row were Steve Ochs, Oklahoma City and Bobby Huddleston, Grand Prairie. The cars were not lined up for the first attempt to start the race. Ochs got a good jump on the next start attempt, with Gary Wright, Hooks, Texas and Wayne Johnson running around the high side to take second and third. But before the first lap was completed, the yellow flag waved as Dupuy came to a stop on the back straight with the front end of his car broken. The field took the green flag, with 23 cars left on the track, for a much better start. Huddleston got the jump on and pulled into the lead. Wright and Johnson followed, dropping Ochs to fourth as the first lap was completed. It took only five laps for leader Huddleston to catch the slowest cars. As the former Devil’s Bowl sprint champion tried to work past the slower cars, Wright found an opening and pushed the Pannel Motorsports / Southwest Express Nr. 9 into the lead. Wright quickly put two cars a lap down, while Johnson got past Huddleston for second. On the ninth lap the yellow flag waved for the third time. It was a good break for Kevin Ramey who was up to fourth. On the restart Ramey slipped past Huddleston, as did Jason Johnson, Eunice, La. A fourth caution a couple laps later gave Ramey the opportunity to take over second on the restart. Ramey’s run lasted only five more laps. Apparently he had lost some water, but whatever the reason, his car emitted a cloud of white smoke on the 16th lap, and he was done for the night. Wayne Johnson was back in second place, with Jason Johnson up to third. Huddleston held fourth and A.G. Raines, West Memphis, Ark. rounded out the top five. The final nine laps ran quickly and smoothly for the top five. They were fast, even when lapping slower cars, but the positions did not change. Wright easily took his second ASCS victory this season at Devil’s Bowl, with Wayne Johnson taking second. There were three lapped cars between Wright and Johnson. Wright was especially happy with the victory. It was his first in a new Maxim chassis and his first since obtaining a new sponsor, Southwest Express, Inc. out of Monroe, La. Wright is a former Devil’s Bowl champion, in both modifieds and sprints. He almost grew up at Devil’s Bowl visiting the track every week as his father raced. It was a good night for teams familiar with the famed Devil’s Bowl half-mile oval. Johnson’s car owners and primary sponsors are based in Dallas, and the third place Nr. 41 car of Jason Johnson is owned by Lanny Row from near by Greenville, Texas. It is sponsored by The Shop Diesel Service and Caddo Grain. The car, with Steve McMackin as driver, won the Devil’s Bowl championship in 1997. Huddleston claimed fourth. Also a former Devil’s Bowl sprint champion, he raced the Commercial Music Nr. 39 several times this season at Devil’s Bowl, including one victory. Rounding out the top five was A.G. Raines in the Acme Equipment Transportation / Davenport Towing and Recovery Nr. 3. Finishing sixth through tenth were newly crowned champion Zac Chappell, Terry Gray, Jan Howard, Danny Jennings, Oklahoma City and Larry Neighbors. Kirkland paced every lap of his heat race, earning enough passing points to start on the pole of the 15 lap USA modified main. Kirkland jumped out to the lead in the Baber’s Garage / Burch Heating and Air Nr. 77. Two time Devil’s Bowl Champion Rowdy Starnes soon moved from fifth to second. On the fast track Kirkland was untouchable. He pulled ahead every time the green flag waved. Only on the final restart after a sixth lap caution did Starnes maintain a steady position five car lengths behind Kirkland. An eight lap caution gave Richard McGibboney the position he needed to take second from Starnes. The cars ran to the checkered flag without another caution, with Kirkland taking the victory. McGibboney, Starnes, Tom Lorenz and Mike Goodson rounded out the top five.
