Taylor and Walker Top World Cup Prelims at Devil's Bowl Mesquite, TX (October 19, 2001) - Troy Taylor held off a determined Billy Carroll to capture Friday night’s preliminary feature of the 8th Annual O’Reilly World Cup for USA Modifieds at Devil’s Bowl Speedway. Keith Walker topped the USA sprint car feature.Taylor and Carroll started on the front row of the 15-lap preliminary feature by virtue of passing points earned in their heat races. Carroll started sixth in the sixth heat, and won to earn the most points. Taylor came from ninth to second in the third heat to claim the outside front row starting spot. The track was tacky and fast despite brisk southerly winds when the green flag fell on the modified feature. Taylor had the advantage on the outside and pulled ahead down the front straight. Carroll had to battle three wide with Sean Jones and Steve Miller to hold the second spot on the back straight on the opening lap. The yellow flag flew a lap later for debris on the track. On the restart, Taylor again pulled away to a three car length advantage. Carroll held second with Jones and Miller swapping the third spot. Another yellow two laps later slowed the field. The green waved and the fourth lap was complete before Rusty Trevathan and Jones made contact in turn one. Battling for fourth, the crash blocked the track. Before it was over eight cars were involved in the pileup, and three were done for the night. The final 11 laps of the race were under the green flag, with Taylor holding off Carroll on the restart. After the cars had completed a couple laps, Taylor’s years of experience at Devil’s Bowl showed he had the right setup as he pulled away from the battle for second. Taylor went on to capture the victory with almost a full straightaway margin over Carroll. Steve Miller moved ahead of Carroll on the final restart. After a close battle Miller pulled two carlengths ahead of Carroll, but on the 11th lap, Miller’s right rear tire let go, forcing him out. Carroll had to battle with Richard Griffin for several laps before claiming the runner-up spot. Griffin held off Rowdy Starnes the final few laps for third. Fifth at the checkered flag was Marty Redmon, who came from the B main and started 18th in the feature. The top four - Taylor, Carroll, Griffin and Starnes will start on the front two rows of Saturday night’s $5,000 to win 25-lap feature. Heat winners were Trevathan, Jones, Miller, Tom Lorenz, Ronnie Carty and Carroll. Chris Huckeba and Doug Smith claimed the transfer spots from the first B main, with Redmon and Dale Wester on top of the second B main. Walker came from eighth to second in his heat race to earn the pole position for the 20-lap USA sprint car feature. Glen Stubblefield, Jr. won his heat to earn the outside front row starting spot. When the green flag fell, Stubblefield was able to put down more power coming through turn four and take the lead. Walker fell in behind Stubblefield, followed by heat winners Paul White and Larry Long. It was one of the fastest tracks of the season for the USA sprint cars, with Stubblefield leading a flying pack of cars around the half-mile clay oval. By the 11th lap, Stubblefield had caught the slowest cars in the field. The fast track made passing difficult and allowed Walker and the other top five cars to close in on Stubblefield’s rear bumper. Walker and Stubblefield made contact in turn three on the 14th lap, with Stubblefield sliding high and Walker taking the lead. Moments later the car of Greg Young erupted into a huge oil fire on the front straight. Young got the car stopped and quickly exited the flaming machine. Track officials doused him with fire extinguishers. Though covered with intense flames and hot oil for a few seconds, Young escaped with only burns to his right arm. He was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. Walker’s pass for the lead did not count due to the yellow flag, but on the restart he cleanly went under Stubblefield in turn four to take the lead. While Walker steadily pulled away Stubblefield slipped back to fourth. Paul White claimed second with Kevin Ramey moving up to third. The top four are locked in for Saturday’s $2,000 to win sprint car feature.
