Stewart Captures World of Outlaws Prelim at Devil's Bowl

Mesquite, TX (October 26, 2001) - Shane Stewart was fast and lucky Friday night, a combination that usually cannot be beat at Devil's Bowl Speedway. He led every lap of the Pennzoil World of Outlaws preliminary feature at the 28th Annual O’Reilly Winter Nationals. Troy Taylor continued his October dominance of the USA modifieds, winning the companion feature event.

Stewart won 10th fastest in the World of Outlaws time trials. Craig Dollansky, who won at Devil’s Bowl in March, set the fast time of the evening - 13.874 seconds. His time put Stewart in the RedLine Oil / WeldTech Nr. 8H on the outside front row of the second heat race. Stewart got the jump on Danny Lasoski with a faster exit from turn four to lead the heat race start to finish. Other heat race winners were Daryn Pittman, Stevie Smith and Sammy Swindell.

In the Channel Lock Dash, Stewart started on the second row. As Swindell and Smith battled for the lead in the first corners and turn three, Stewart was able to slip past both to lead the dash from start to finish. That put him on the pole position for the 25 lap preliminary feature. Paul McMahan and Gary Wright had a spirited duel at the end of the B main when they ended up diving both inside and outside of a lapped car coming through the final turn. McMahan pulled inches ahead of Wright to win the B main. Jason Meyers and Ricky Logan picked up the final two transfer spots.

After the World of Outlaws famous four wide salute to the fans, Stewart and Joey Saldana led the 24 car field down to take the green flag. Saldana slipped sideways on the start, possibly spinning his rear tires trying to accelerate on the fast track. Stewart took off with Dollansky moving into second. Swindell jumped from seventh on the start to fifth by the end of the first lap. A lap later the field slowed as 24th starting Mark Kinser stopped in turn four.

After Kinser restarted, the race resumed with Stewart pulling away to a ten car length lead. By the sixth lap, he caught the slowest cars in the field and began to work lapped traffic. Swindell had moved up to fourth, and his years of experience on the Devil’s Bowl half mile were evident. Swindell worked the lapped traffic, choosing different lines to get past the slower cars. A ninth lap caution bunched the field and Swindell took third place on the restart.

Stewart was back in lapped traffic on the 14th lap, Swindell got past Dollansky with a power move down low in the second turn on the 17th circuit. He quickly closed on Stewart who was held up by the slower cars. Swindell made his move on the back straight on the 19th lap. Unfortunately, Stewart did not know Swindell was rapidly closing and his rear tires made contact with Swindell’s front tires. Swindell in the Nr. 1 Channel Lock / Fansteel Stealth spun to a stop with the front end broken.

When the race resumed, Stewart had no trouble pulling away to take the victory by 15 car lengths in his Gaerte powered Eagle. It was Stewart’s second preliminary feature win in a week, having also accomplished the task last Friday night at the Talladega Short Track. Andy Hillenburg started fifth in the Luxaire Nr. 2. He moved into second on the 20th lap when Dollansky slipped over the cushion in turn two. Dollansky held third in the Polydome Nr. 7, followed by Saldana in the Beef Packers Nr. 83. Those four drivers will start near the front of Saturday’s main event. Steve Kinser made a great run through traffic in the second half of the race to finish fifth after starting 20th.

Taylor topped his heat race, as did Jerry Cowart, Kevin Hazelip and Tom Lorenz. Rick McCommas came from tenth to win the modified B main. Taylor was on the pole for the 15-lap modified main. He quickly pulled away and was never seriously challenged for the lead despite three cautions. It was Taylor’s third straight win this month. Lorenz claimed second, followed by Cowart, Richard McGibboney and Hazelip. 2001 Late Model Champion Ronnie Long ran strong in the Tom Loving Leasing Nr. 6L for his first modified start. He was running third in heavy traffic when he could not avoid a spinning lapped car on the 14th lap and was knocked out of the race.
