Saldana Leads the Way at Devil's Bowl Winter Nationals

Mesquite, TX (October 27, 2001) - Making up for a poor start on Friday, Joey Saldana grabbed the lead of the Pennzoil World of Outlaws A Feature on the start Saturday night and stayed out front all 35 laps to the checkered flag at Devil’s Bowl Speedway’s 28th Annual O’Reilly Winter Nationals. Danny Lasoski took the World of Outlaws points lead away from Mark Kinser. Tom Lorenz took the USA modified victory.

Friday night Saldana got on the power a little too quickly at the start of the preliminary feature. That allowed Shane Stewart to take the lead. Stewart won Friday’s race while Saldana faded to fourth.

Saturday night the track would be drier after a bright sunny day and racing the previous evening. Devil’s Bowl promoter Lanny Edwards and his crew got as much moisture as possible into the track, which made time trials a bit slower than Friday. P.J. Chesson was the fastest with a lap of 13.934 seconds, 120.14 m.p.h. in the Automotive Service Centers / Barker Bus Nr. 76. Chesson was the only driver under 14 seconds, where six drivers broke the barrier Friday.

Johnny Herrera in the Casey’s General Stores / Housby Grup Nr. 6 and Danny Lasoski in the J.D. Byrider / Hamm America Nr. 20L paced their heat races from start to finish. The third heat was the most interesting with local driver / high school student Matt Clevenger starting on the pole. Clevenger won his first 360 sprint feature at Devil’s Bowl in September. After setting the 12th fastest time, Clevenger led the ten cars down to the checkered flag in his H&H Steel Fabrication/ NAPA Nr. 31. The more experienced Tim Shaffer and Paul McMahan got past Clevenger on the opening lap. McMahan in the United Expresslines Trailers Nr. U2 went on to win the heat. Clevenger lost the fifth place final transfer spot to Jason Meyers after a very good race for the young driver.

Clevenger’s time made him the fastest driver not to qualify for the A, and he started on the pole of the 12-lap B. Other drivers in the B included former champion Sammy Swindell and defending champion Mark Kinser. Clevenger set the pace for five laps until they caught lapped traffic. Clevenger’s car was tight in the middle of the corners, causing him to slow significantly. Swindell has raced at Devil’s Bowl for almost 25 years. He probably has run more laps on the half-mile oval than Clevenger has in three years of racing. Swindell waited until Clevenger hesitated behind a lapped car and took the lead coming out of the second turn on lap six. Swindell drove the Channel Lock / Fansteel Nr. 1 easily to victory in the B main. Donnie Crawford also got past Clevenger a lap later. The yellow flag flew on the ninth lap for Jeff Mitrisin’s stopped mount. Roy Larking clipped the cone on the restart.

As the race resumed, Clevenger’s problem in the middle of the turn got worse. Ricky Logan took third as the white flag flew. Right behind Clevenger were Mark Kinser and Donnie Schatz battling for the final transfer spot. Turn two was Clevenger’s undoing as Kinser and Schatz edged ahead. The three cars raced the final half lap almost side by side with Kinser and Schatz’s superior horsepower pulling them ahead of the local driver on the final straight. Though Clevenger did not make the feature, he demonstrated a lot of maturity and skill against superior cars in a great race

Shane Stewart drove the RedLine Oil / Weld Tech Nr. 8H to victory in the Channel Lock Dash, ahead of Andy Hillenburg. The pair were lined up just like last weekend’s races in Alabama when Stewart captured the preliminary feature and Hillenburg the A feature. Saldana was third with Craig Dollansky fourth in the dash to set the first two rows for the 35-lap A feature. Chesson and Daryn Pittman claimed the third row of the A with their fifth and sixth place finishes. The driver on the move was Jason Johnson in the Lanny Row owned The Shop Diesel Service / Caddo Grain Nr. 41. Starting 10th in the dash, he passed three cars to earn the inside fourth row starting spot for the feature.

When the green flag fell on the 25-lap feature, Stewart and Hillenburg raced side by side down the front straight and into turn one. Hillenburg tried to hold the line around the top of the turn. Stewart tried to hold his car on the low line, but slipped up the bank in turn two. That gave Saldana the perfect opportunity to accelerate straight through turn two onto the curved back straight and grab the lead. Hillenburg again tried to drive around the top of three and four, but could not get past Stewart. Saldana paced the first lap by a car length over Stewart with Hillenburg right behind.

As cars slipped through a dry patch in turns one and two, Jason Johnson was on the move, quickly challenging Craig Dollansky for fourth. Johnson edged ahead of Dollansky at the line as the second lap was complete. The pair raced down the front straight just inches apart. Going into turn one, Johnson had the inside line, but Dollansky stayed close, not giving Johnson room to set the car for turn one. The two cars made contact with Johnson spinning across the front of Dollansky’s Polydome Nr. 7. The lift and momentum sent Johnson flipping four times end over end, and for a couple barrel rolls. Luckly for Johnson there is a large runoff for the turns at Devil’s Bowl and his car did not hit anything, though it traveled almost 300 feet before coming to a stop. Dollansky almost saved his car, but went over a couple times.

The Polydome/ Karavan Motorsports crew was able to replace several parts, including the front axle and get Dollansky back in the race without losing a lap. Johnson was done for the night.

Saldana had a clear track for the restart and stayed out front in the Beef Packers / Southwest Hide Nr. 83. He built a comfortable lead, which quickly evaporated when he caught the back of the field on the seventh lap. Stewart quickly closed up on Saldana’s back bumper and battled for the lead. The pair were trying to pick their way past the slower cars when Stewart slammed into the back of Saldana’s car in turn one on the 11th lap. The collision sent parts flying, and Stewart spinning. Though he was able to keep the car running, Stewart had to go to the back of the field after causing the caution.

While Stewart was idling around the track to let the rest of the cars passing him under yellow, Swindell moved down and made contact with Stewart’s right front tire. Swindell had challenged Stewart for the lead on Friday, and was knocked out after Stewart slid up into Swindell’s front end. World of Outlaws officials have warned Swindell several times this season about retaliation, and he received the penalty he had been promised. WoO officials ordered is car parked for the rest of the race. Swindell took exception to the ruling, but had to leave the race.

Back under green, Saldana pulled away with Hillenburg in second and Chesson third. The third caution of the race flew just as Saldana was catching lapped traffic on the 17th lap. Donnie Schatz came to a stop on the front straight.

The final 18 laps of the race were caution free, with great racing action in lapped traffic. Saldana was out front every lap at the start finish line, but Hillenburg was alongside several time. Hillenburg actually took the lead in turn one on the 32nd lap, but Saldana powered back out front coming out of turn four a few seconds later. Saldana took the victory, his first of the 2001 season by three car lengths over Hillenburg in the Luxaire Nr. 2. Chesson was right behind in third, followed by the Winnebago / Itasco Motor Homes Nr. 3 of Daryn Pittman in fourth. McMahan claimed fifth.

Lasoski took the checkered flag in sixth position. His finish, along with Mark Kinser’s 14th place finish gave Lasoski the World of Outlaws championship points lead. The margin was nine points in Kinser’s favor after Friday. Now Lasoski leads by seven points with three races left in the season. There is a race in Oklahoma City Tuesday night, October 30, and the season finale November 2 & 3 in Las Vegas.

A field of 43 USA modifieds took the track in five heat races. Troy Taylor who had won three straight features before Saturday knew a fourth would be difficult after drawing the first starting spot for the heats. Despite starting on the pole and winning his heat, Taylor only earned enough passing points to start ninth in the feature. Kevin Hazelip, Tom Lorenz, John Ewell and Richard McGibboney won the other heats. Ewell earned the feature pole position, coming from eighth to win his heat. Jeff Welborn and Johnny Hitt won the twin B mains.

Ewell had broken a part in the head of his engine, and could not start the feature. That moved Lorenz up to the pole position, with Hazelip on the outside of the front row. Lorenz took the lead in the Smiley’s Racing Products Nr. 84 on the start with Hazelip right behind. The caution flew after the first lap for debris on the track. Darrell Hathcock and Mark Johannesen got together in turn two. Taylor slid into the stopped cars. Several other cars were involved, including Rick McCommas. Taylor had problems on the restart, and another caution flew for Taylor’s stopped car. He was able to go to the pits and get a tire changed before the race resumed. McCommas had a left rear tire going flat, but only went to the pits right before the green flag flew.

Steve Sickles and Johnny Hitt got together a lap after the race resumed for the third caution of the race. McCommas rejoined the race, but had missed the fourth lap in the pits. Clyde Dunn, Jr. was running third and got sideways in turn two on the restart, collecting several cars. Lorenz stayed out front, but had to fight off three wide challenges for the lead on the restarts. After the race’s fifth and final caution on the seventh lap, the race ran under the green to the checkered flag. Chris Huckeba and Jerry Cowart challenged Lorenz at different times, but could not get to the front. Lorenz took the win, with Cowart second. Ronnie Long was a strong third with Taylor climbing up from the back to finish fourth. Hathcock took fifth.
