Saldana Claims Wild Spring Nationals Victory Mesquite, TX (March 16, 2002) - Joey Saldana took the lead under the red flag on the 22nd lap of Pennzoil World of Outlaws A feature enroute to victory Saturday night at Devil’s Bowl Speedway. Rick McCommas claimed his second straight USA modified main. Two red flags for multi-car flips slowed the 35-lap feature, including the crash that took out leader Tyler Walker on the 22nd lap. The 29th Annual Spring Nationals got off to a little late start Saturday. Promoter Lanny Edwards had added some extra water to the track trying to avoid a repeat of the tricky conditions Friday night. High humidity and a light breezes undid Edwards plan, forcing some extra hotlaps to bring in the track surface. Danny Lasoski set fast time again Saturday with a lap of 14.290. Stevie Smith, Gary Wright and Jac Haudenschild won the heat races. Friday night winner Brad Furr had an engine fail during the O’Reilly Dash. He had to borrow an engine from Saldana to make the feature. Steve Kinser set the pace during the dash to earn the pole for the 35-lap feature. Walker earned the outside front row starting spot with Craig Dollansky and Danny Lasoski earning the second row starting spots with third and fourth place finishes. Zach Chappell led all 12 laps of the B main, with Kraig Kinser taking second. Wayne Johnson, Blake Mallory and Michael Dupuy also earned transfer spots for the feature. Danny Wood and Donnie Schatz used provisionals to make the 26 car field for the 35-lap main. Tyler Walker got a good start, staying even with Steve Kinser as they dragged down the front straight and took the lead from the King of the Outlaws exiting turn two. Walker’s run up front was short when the red flag flew before the lap was complete. Chappell got sideways in turn four. Dupuy made contact with Chappell and flipped. Schatz could not avoid Dupuy and also flipped in turn four. That ended a bad weekend for Schatz, who had to provisionals to make the feature both Friday and Saturday night. Steve Kinser was not going loose the lead as the field lined up for a complete restart. He hit the power in turn three and had a two car length lead on Walker when they crossed the chalk line in turn four. The race continued under green with Kinser flying around the track, followed by Walker. Dollansky and Saldana battled for third with Saldana taking the spot on the fourth trip around the half-mile clay oval. Kinser caught lapped cars on the sixth lap. He worked past the slower cars but Walker was gaining. By the 16th lap Walker had cut Kinser’s lead to just a car length. Walker ran high through three and four with Kinser low. For three laps they were side by side in the turn before Walker pulled ahead to lead the 20th lap. Things got worse for the leaders two laps later. Kinser’s motor broke in turn three on the 22nd lap. As everyone watched the Outlaws points leader slow, action on the front straight had a greater impact on the race. Apparently Brook Tatnell and Terry McCarl made contact. Whatever happened, McCarl started a violent series of flips down the front straight, ripping the axles off the car. Walker was preparing to lap the two and had no place to go, sliding into McCarl and putting the C&W Motorsports Nr. 35 out of the race after it flipped. Everyone was shaken but walked away from the crash. That left third running Saldana out front on the restart. He easily pulled away, running the fastest laps of the evening on his way to victory. The driver of the Eagle Raceway / HEMsaw Nr. 17 was perfect as he paced the final 14 laps of the feature. Craig Dollansky was second, but could not catch Saldana in the fastest car in the race. Mark Kinser battled with Danny Lasoski several times in the closing laps, but maintained the third position. Fifth behind Lasoski was Johnny Herrera. Furr, Jason Johnson, Tim Shaffer, P.J. Chesson and Jac Haudenschild completed the top ten. McCommas and Mike Goodson won the USA modified heat races, but passing points put Scotty Brown on the pole for the 15 lap feature. Goodson was outside the front row with Friday night winner McCommas inside the second row as 19 modifieds took the green flag for their feature. After racing side by side through the opening turns, Brown took the lead on the back straight. McCommas moved past Goodson on the second lap. McCommas had his B&H Painting / Duckworth Asphalt and Paving Nr. 39 hooked up as he caught Brown. They ran side by side on the fourth lap with McCommas taking the lead as he pulled low out of turn two on the fifth circuit. Brown’s night ended a lap later when he lost the drive shaft in the B&B Concrete Sawing Nr. 44. Goodson lost his engine on the tenth lap, and Darrel Hathcock could not avoid Goodson’s stopped car. Ronnie Welborn moved up on the restart to challenge McCommas, but a spin just before the white flag flew bunched the field for a final two lap dash to the checkered flag. McCommas was perfect through turn two on the final laps, avoiding the sliding that was costing him time earlier in the race. Randy Kirkland slipped into second, with Welborn falling to third. Buck Spears and Richard McGibboney rounded out the top five.
