Goodwin Sweeps While Young Repeats

Mesquite, TX (April 27, 2002) - Jimmy Goodwin swept the late models, winning his heat, the trophy dash and the 15-lap feature at Devil’s Bowl Speedway Saturday night. Greg Young made it two in a row with a victory in the USA Sprint Car main. Tony Batt battled to the front of the USA Modifieds and Chuck Hall captured a wild street stock main.

Goodwin started out right, leading every lap of his heat race in the Gatlin Motors / RC Drywall Nr. 12. He came back in the trophy dash with another flag to flag win. That put him in position to win a $100 bonus from Park Auto Sales if he could top the late model feature. Goodwin started from the pole and got a big jump as the green flag fell. He pulled away from his early challengers. Brad Zimmerman tried to catch Goodwin, but could not close on the leader. Steve Trevathan got past Zimmerman in the final laps for second with Zimmerman finishing third in the caution free feature. Harry Hronas was fourth, with Darren Ellis fifth. James Williams in the Red Line Raceway / Stan Hopkins Company Nr. 22 won the other late model heat race.

Young’s feature win last week put him on the inside of the fifth row when the 20-lap USA sprint car feature started. The red flag flew before the first lap was finished when Matt Clevenger and Keith Walker made contact entering turn one. Walker was on the outside and went end over end twice after flying over the cushion. He was uninjured. When the race resumed, Rick Summers in the Johnny Suggs Racing Nr. 99 had the lead. Brian Harvill slipped past his father Bill Harvill to take second and start chasing down Summers on the second lap. Summers had a comfortable lead until the yellow flag flew on the ninth lap. On the restart it was Summers, Brian Harvill, Larry Long and Young in the top four spots. Summers car slipped sideways in turn two as the cars came up to speed. The leaders went four wide with wheels beating and banging. Young took the Mack’s Auto Service Nr. 9 to the inside and pulled into the lead. On a straight run to the checkered flag, no one could get close to Young as he took his second straight victory. Long took second place after a tight battle. George White came through the pack for third, with Summers fourth. Matt Clevenger took fifth in the final laps. Young, Summers and Brian Harvill in the Harvill Industries / Graphic Wonder Nr. 31B won the heat races.

Tony Batt has a bad race last week, but by earning few points, he had the pole for the 15-lap USA modified feature. The leaders were three and four wide on the opening lap with Batt pushing the A-1 Grass Company/ C.D. Henderson Inc. Nr. 27 into the lead. The inevitable crash occurred early, with several cars sustaining major body damage, and a couple forced out of the race. Batt soon had his full trying to hold the lead as defending champion Rowdy Starnes in the Starnes Trucking / Big G Auto Supply Nr. 50X tried to take the lead. The pair raced side by side several times, with Batt always able to hold onto the lead, sometimes by just a few inches. In the final five laps, Clyde Dunn, Jr. moved into the battle, making it three wide several times. Batt scored his first win of the year with Starnes right behind. Dunn fell to fourth when his car faltered coming out of turn four on the final lap. Richard McGibboney took third. rounding out the top five was Ronnie Welborn. Jay Miller in the Jeanie’s Motorsports / Rick Shipp Rebuilders Nr. 34 won the B main. Starnes, Dunn in the Smiley’s Racing Products / Speed Specialities Nr. 88, Bobby Ruffin in the Mooney Racing Engines / Unlimited Race Products Nr. 121 and Rick McCommas in the B&H Painting / McCommas Construction Nr. 39 won the heat races. Brian Short earned the Timber Wolf Hard Charger Award. He started the feature in 22nd place, after coming from 13th to 6th in the B main. In the feature, the driver of the ABC Auto Salvage / Kustom Machine Shop Nr. 2 passed 12 cars en route to a tenth place finish.

Hall started the 12-lap street stock main on the outside of the seventh row in the Speed Pro Signs / Pooltech Nr. 7. Things got wild early with a big crash in turn one. Mike Walls set the pace when the race finally got started. Hall was up to fifth halfway though the race. Several cautions helped him move up, and he took second place on the seven th lap. Walls had trouble a lap later and spun in the second turn. As the top cars tried to avoid Walls, Thomas Weeks came out ahead of the others, but Hall moved past Weeks on the other end of the track to take the lead. Hall went on to take the win by ten car lengths with Mike Meeks, Jr. claiming second. Weeks was third with Dewitt Donald, Jr. fourth. Tim McManus had a great run to finish fifth after being knocked out in the opening lap crash, and going to the back due to a flat tire a few laps later. Weeks won his heat in the Bobby Duncan Nr. 5X. The other heat winners were Michael Murphy in the Fernandez GMC - Pontiac - Buick / Crawford Automotive Nr. 21 and Travis Pace in the Gary’s Machine Shop / Schramm’s Ammo & Weapons Nr. 17.
