Erwin Tops Sprints At Devil’s Bowl Mesquite, TX (June 15, 2002) - Brandon Erwin battled the entire 20-lap distance of the USA sprint car A feature Saturday night at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on his way to his first win of the season. Skip O’Neal took his second straight victory in the late model main. Rick McCommas topped the wild USA modified feature. Mike Deaver inherited the street stock victory.Erwin started the Lake Kiowa.Com / Sign Guy Graphics Nr. 5E on the pole of the USA sprint car feature after Brad Wesp dropped out. Taking the green flag alongside Charlie Brown in the Koin Kar Wash / Sewer Service Company Nr. 72, Erwin pulled into the lead coming out of the second turn on the first lap. The yellow flag waved a lap later when Keith Walker spun. When the green flag flew again, Erwin and Brown pulled away from the battle for third place. Though they were circling the track at top speed, the pair was never more than a couple car lengths apart. Erwin held his line and flew through the corners, with Brown always a car length or two behind. Only in the final laps did Erwin build his lead to five car lengths. Matt Clevenger took third from Claude Estes, Jr. on the 13th lap. Clevenger was a full straight away behind the lead duo at that point. He narrowed the gap to a half dozen car lengths but ran out of laps by the time the checkered flag flew. Kevin Ramey put his car aside this week and drive Bill Harvill’s Nr. 55 to fourth place, with Greg Young fifth as he spun across the line when the cars had to dodge the rapidly slowing car of Bob Ewell at the checkered flag. Brown won the first heat race and Marvin Lough topped the second heat in the Commercial Music / Smoke Pit Bar-B-Que Nr. 39. The second heat saw a fast start but Walker tapped Ricky Summers’ rear bumper as they raced through turn two on the opening lap. Walker immediately hit the brakes, but the damage was done. Summers spun, Walker spun and four other cars plowed into the two stopped cars. Summers was knocked over and there was some heated discussions after the cars came to a stop. Everyone was alright and able to start the feature. Skip O’Neal took his second straight late model victory Saturday, his third of the season. He started the Urban Fire Protection / Barnsco Construction Materials Nr. 8 on the third row of the first heat. He moved into the lead on the seventh lap to win the heat. Cheyney Hopkins won the other heat in the Red Line Raceway / Snap-On Tools Nr. 22. O’Neal was also on the third row for the start of the 15-lap feature. J.D. Wilson in the Nr. V8 jumped out to the lead as the green flag waved. O’Neal had to battle past Keith Darrow to move up to second on the fifth lap. On the ninth trip around the half-mile clay oval, O’Neal was able to cut Wilson’s lead to only two car lengths. The leaders were side by side two laps later when the yellow flag waved. On the restart, O’Neal went past Wilson to take the lead. He pulled away to take the win without difficulty. Darren Ellis got past Wilson for second. Fourth was Ronnie Long with Hopkins taking fifth place. There were six lead changes, three cautions and a wild finish in the USA modified feature. Polesitter Rusty Trevathan took the lead three different times in the Foster Racing / Smiley’s Racing Products Nr. 51. He set the pace for the first six laps. The race’s second caution lined up the field on Trevathan’s rear bumper. Mark Johannesen in the Seldom Open Paint & Body / Just Fishing Guide Service Nr. 1 had raced with Trevathan the entire distance. He pulled into the lead after the race resumed, but Trevathan was not finished. He reclaimed the lead on the next lap. The action in the pack was wild and rough. Points leader Richard McGibboney has moved up to third and took second on the tenth lap. When Clyde Dunn, Jr.’s car stopped on the front straight with a broken rear end, everyone again lined up on Trevathan’s rear bumper for the restart. McGibboney has the best run on the restart and took the lead in turn two in his Baber’s Garage / Red’s Meat Co. Nr. 19. Trevathan came back again to take the lead on the 13th lap. However, as the 13th lap ended the flagman mistakenly waved the white flag. Rick McCommas in the B&H Painting / Performax Trailers Nr. 39 went under Trevathan to take the lead as the field crossed under the white flag the second time to end the 14th lap. Several drivers were confused by the two white flags and slowed thinking the race was over. Other drivers did not stop and there were several collisions. Promoter Lanny Edwards called the race complete after 14 laps, and that is how the field was paid. Tom Lorenz was credited with third behind McCommas and Trevathan, with McGibboney fourth and B main winner Rowdy Starnes in the Starnes Trucking / Big G Auto Supply Nr. 50X in fifth place. John Ewell in the Foam Enterprises / Longhorn Urethane Contractors Nr. 10 won the first heat, but was unable to start the trophy dash or feature. McCommas topped the second heat race and Ronnie Welborn in the Country Kids Day Cars / R&R Metal Works Nr. 20 won the other heat race. Jay Miller topped the trophy dash in his Jeanie’s Motorsports / Bailey’s Crankshaft Nr. 34. McCommas won the Timber Wolf Racing Hard Charger Award after starting 12th and passing 11 cars on his way to victory. Mike Walls has had a simply awful season in the Nr. 38 street stock. Mechanical problems, flat tires and crashes have put the Nr. 38 on the trailer early almost every night. Saturday it looked like Walls’ luck had changed. He led most of the 12-lap street stock feature and came out of a close, lead swapping battle with Mike Deaver to be the first car under the checkered flag. Unfortunately, Walls could not pass the scales, the car was 10 pounds under the minimum weight, and he was dropped to last place. Deaver was awarded the feature win. Deaver started the Nr. 29D on the fourth row. He worked up and was third after the second lap. Second place Arin Lawrence’s car started to smoke and he was black flagged. Deaver got past into second, but was over half the length of the front straight away behind Walls. Deaver managed to close half the margin before the yellow flag flew. Travis Pace and Michael Grubbs got together in heavy racing traffic on the front straight, taking both cars out. On the restart, Deaver stayed high in turns one and two while Walls went low. Deaver came out leading on the back straight, with Chuck Hall also getting past Walls. The leaders were almost side by side as they completed the eighth lap. Deaver and Walls both avoided Hall when he spun in turn two on the next lap. Walls got a run on the back straight on the 11th lap and retook the lead. He took the checkered flag by a car length over Deaver. Points leader Trandel White ended up second behind Deaver with Michael Murphy third. Mike Meeks, Jr. was fourth with Tim McManus in fifth. Several cars were involved in spins in turn three and four on the final lap. Andy Jones was a ways behind the crashes, but had to go off the top of turn three at full speed to avoid the other cars. His car flipped three or four times and a brilliant fire erupted under the hood as the car came to a stop. Jones quickly exited his car without injury. Walls, Meeks in the Meeks Paint & Body / Ernie’s Auto Motors Nr. 37 and Grubbs in the Grubbs Motorsports / Graphics by Edge Nr. 00X won the street stock heat races.
