Walls Takes Street Stock Win At Devil’s Bowl Mesquite, TX (June 22, 2002) - Mike Walls made up for last week by leading the street stocks from start to finish at Devil’s Bowl Speedway Saturday night. Rawdy Hull set the pace for all 20 laps on his way to his first USA sprint car victory this season. John Ewell ran away from the rest of the field on his way to winning the USA modified main. Cheyney Hopkins put his late model in victory lane for the second time this year.
The 2002 season has not been a good one for Mike Walls, and last week it turned worse. After leading the street stock feature to the checkered flag, his car was light at the scales after the race. Saturday he came back and again led the street stock feature from the drop of the green flag until the checkered flag, and survived the post race inspection to officially claim his first feature win this year. From the outside of the front row, Walls pushed the Nr. 38 high around the first two turns and took the lead on the back straight on the opening lap. The yellow flag flew immediately when Mike Meeks, Jr. lost a wheel in heavy traffic. The cars lined up for a new start, and again Walls pulled ahead and grabbed the lead. He raced ahead of the field until the seventh lap when the caution flag waved again. With Chuck Hall and points leader Trandel White lined up right behind him, Walls was able to pull away and hold his lead all the way to the checkered flag. White was second at the finish with Hall, Michael Murphy and Travis Pace rounding out the top five. Joe Crowder in the Grubbs Motorsports / Candle Art by KC Nr. 72, Walls in the Nr. 38, and Arin Lawrence in the Advocare by Maureen Nr. 9L won the heat races.
Rawdy Hull started the Wayne Hull Construction / All Trucks & Equipment Nr. 8H on the outside of the front row as the USA sprint cars took the green flag. Hull and Charlie Brown raced side by side down the front straight after the green flag fell with Hull pulling into the lead. The track was fast but the wind generated by the sprint car wings and the large right rear tires dried the middle of the turns quickly. Hull went to the top and raced steadily to pull away in the first few laps. Brown soon found his line and started to close on Hull. Skip Wilson and Paul White were the two drivers moving toward the front in the first half of the race. Hull was leading Brown by five car lengths when trophy dash winner Keith Walker spun the Leo Walker Paint & Body / Quality Powder Coating Nr. 52 in turn two to bring out the only caution of the feature. Hull pulled away on the restart as the battle for second went three wide through the turns. Wilson took the second position, with White moving into third. Hull pulled away from the battle for second and was a full straight away ahead of Wilson when he took the checkered flag. Fourth behind Wilson and White was Brandon Erwin with Marvin Lough fifth. Wilson won the first heat race in the Forney Koin Kar Wash / Bubba’s Plumbing Nr. 65 and Brown won the second heat in his Koin Kar Wash / City Blues Nr. 72. Matt Clevenger was shaken after a hard flip in the trophy dash. His car climbed the rear tire of Ricky Summers car as they entered turn one on the fourth lap. Both cars were too damaged to make the feature.
David Gailley set the pace early in the USA modified 15-lap feature. He took the lead on the back straight on the opening lap. The first caution flew on the third lap for Dale Wester’s stopped car in turn four. Ewell had moved up on the Foam Enterprises / Longhorn Urethane Contractors Nr. 10 from starting fifth to second when the yellow flag flew. Running around the top of turns one and two, Ewell pulled into the lead and never looked back. Another caution two laps later slowed the race, but Ewell pulled away easily on the restart. Nothing slowed him down and no one could catch him as he raced to the checkered flag and his first victory this year at Devil’s Bowl. Darrel Hathcock had a great run to finish second, as did Frank Rose who was third at the checkered flag. Rusty Trevathan took fourth and Rowdy Starnes was fifth. Starnes won the Timber Wolf Hard Charger Award by passing 13 cars after starting 18th. Starnes also took over the USA modified points lead, by just 10 points over Rick McCommas and Richard McGibboney in the tightest points race at the speedway. Randy Kirkland won the B main in the Reliable Plumbing / Baber’s Garage Nr. 77. The heat race winners were Ewell, Richard Miller in the Jeanie’s Motorsports / Rick Shipp Rebuilders Nr. 23Z, Gailley in the Stanley Commission Company / Tommy G’s Welding Nr. 50D and Steve Sickles in the Troy’s Used Cars of Garland / Duane Swindell Nr. 50.
Ronnie Welborn in the R&R Welding / Baxter & Sons Elevator Nr. 77 and Darren Ellis in the Sport City Toyota / Blueprint Service of Plano Nr. 23 won the late model heat races. Welborn led the 17 car late model field down to the checkered flag as they took off in search of the $1,000 first place money. Welborn pulled ahead to lead the opening lap. He build a five car length lead by the fourth lap, but began to slow. Welborn pulled off the track on the seventh lap, giving up the lead. J.D. Wilson in the Nr. V8 took over the lead as the caution waved so Welborn’s stopped car could be moved to safety. Two more quick cautions kept the race slow for several minutes. When the field got going again, Wilson was out front, but Cheyney Hopkins was second. By the eleventh lap there was a five car battle for the lead with the cars bumping and rubbing for the lead. Hopkins went low in turn two to take the top spot on the 13th lap. He kept the Red Line Raceway / Stan Hopkins Company Nr. 22 out front to take his second win this year ahead of Wilson. Third was Ellis with Jimmy Goodwin fourth and Skip O’Neal fifth. Steve Trevathan had a flat early in the feature, and was involved in an eighth lap crash. The poor finish, 17th, and O’Neal’s fifth place finish allowed O’Neal to take the points lead from Trevathan by just 15 points.
