Wilson Duels Ewell for Sprint Win At Devil’s Bowl

Mesquite, TX (June 15, 2002) - Defending Devil’s Bowl USA Sprint Car champion Skip Wilson chased down Bob Ewell and took the victory on the final two laps of the final feature Saturday night at Devil’s Bowl Speedway. Kevin Hazelip claimed his first USA modified feature win at Devil’s Bowl and Joe Crowder topped the street stocks, also for his first win at Devil’s Bowl. Ronnie Long won his first late model main of the year.

Charlie Brown took the lead at the start of the USA sprint car feature and kept the Koin Kar Wash / City Blues Nr. 72 out front through four laps. Ewell took second place from Keith Walker on the restart after a third lap caution. A lap later Ewell pulled past Brown to put the Foam Enterprises / Longhorn Urethane Nr. 85 into the lead. Ewell pulled away from the field as Wilson was battling past Walker to take third on the eighth lap. Wilson claimed second from Brown on the eleventh lap of the 20-lap feature. Ewell had a large lead but Wilson was the faster car Saturday night. He closed the margin and was battling for the lead with just a few laps left in the race. As the white flag came out Wilson put his Forney Koin Kar Wash / Bubba’s Plumbing Nr. 65 into the lead. Ewell did not surrender the position easily and battled Wilson to the checkered flag to finish second. Marvin Lough came from tenth at the start to take third. That finish in the Commercial Music / Smoke Pit Bar-B-Que Nr. 39 put Lough into the USA sprint car points lead. Fourth at the checkered flag was Matt Clevenger with Walker fifth. Ewell and Walker in the Leo Walker Paint & Body/ Quality Powder Coating Nr. 52 won the heat races.

Hazelip made the most of his front row starting position Saturday night. In three previous races this year the driver of the J&J Construction/ RRC Racing Nr. 74 has only qualified for one A feature. Saturday night he and his crew had the car working perfectly as he led every lap of his heat race and also lead the 15-lap feature from start to finish. Hazelip got a lot of practice on taking the lead from polesitter Eddie Williams. Two crashes before the first lap was completed put three cars in the pits. Another crash after the end of the first lap send three more cars to their trailers. On the restart Hazelip was able to hold the lead and continued out front until the 13th lap when the fourth yellow flag of the race flew. Hazelip maintained his lead through the final laps for his first win at Devil’s Bowl. Tony Batt barely made the feature, taking the final transfer spot in the B main in the final two laps. He was fifteenth after the early crashes. Steadily climbing through the field, Batt took fourth on the 13th lap before the caution flew. He went from fourth to second on the final la. His run from 24th to second earned Batt his first Timber Wolf Racing Hard Charger Award of the season by passing 22 cars. Williams took third with Mark Johannesen fourth and Dale Wester fifth. Rick McCommas won the B main in his B&H Painting / Duckworth Asphalt & Paving Nr. 39. The heat races went to Hazelip, Williams in the Tri-County Plumbing Nr. 3W, Bobby Ruffin in the Mooney Racing Engines / Unlimited Racing Products Nr. 121 and Kevin DeLashaw in the Kustom Machine Shop / ABC Auto Salvage Nr. K2.

Crowder has also had trouble getting his Grubbs Motorsports / Candle Art by KC Nr. 72 running well this season. Though he won a heat race two weeks ago, Crowder best A feature finish was 15th. Saturday night he lined up on the outside of the front row. As the green flag fell Crowder raced into the corner, but Tim McManus who started right behind him went around the top of the turn and claimed the early lead. McManus was in control of the race, keeping his Seldom Open Paint & Body / F&J Construction Nr. 29 perfect lap after lap. McManus bad luck season went south with final laps. His right rear tire started going down and Crowder closed the gap. When McManus tire let go on the 11th lap, Crowder claimed the lead. Fighting off Jimmy Luker, Crowder won his first feature at Devil’s Bowl. Third behind Luker was Pat Walls with Mike Deaver and Chuck Hall rounding out the top five. Trandel White won the B main in his Garcia’s Lawn Care / Whitestar Trailers Nr. 10. The heat races were won by Crowder, Michael Murphy in the Fernandez G.M.C. - Pontiac - Buick / Crawford Automotive Nr. 21 and Dewitt Donald, Jr. in the Triple A Muffler / Bowen’s Garage Nr. 99.

Ronnie Long put the Town East Ford / Enduro Powder Coating Nr. 28 in victory lane Saturday night at Devil's Bowl. Linda Fields Photo

Ronnie Long put his Town East Ford / Enduro Powder Coating Nr. 28 into victory lane for the first time this year. Starting the 15-lap finale on the outside of the second row, Long pulled around Brad Zimmerman and Cameron Wilson to take the lead on the first lap. Zimmerman maintained second and tried to catch Long, but did not have a chance until the only caution of the race flew on the tenth lap. Zimmerman tried to keep up on the restart, but Long had the car he needed to pull away and capture the victory. Jimmy Goodwin took third with Skip O’Neal fourth and Steve Trevathan finishing fifth. Goodwin won the first heat in the Gatlin Motors / Tony’s D&D Auto Parts Nr. 12 while Zimmerman won the second heat race in his Steve’s Portable Welding / Pro Muffler Nr. 11X.
