Wester Takes Wild Modified Win

At Devil’s Bowl

Mesquite, TX (July 13, 2002) - Dale Wester survived a caution filled feature to win his first USA modified main of the year at Devil’s Bowl Speedway Saturday night. Keith Walker topped the USA sprint cars, leading from flag to flag. Michael Murphy led only one lap of the street stock main, the last one to take the win. Skip O’Neal claimed his fifth late model victory of the year.

It took three tries to get the USA modified feature started. Rowdy Starnes broke on the start and could not clear the track. On the second start David Gailley and Marc Madison touched entering turn three. Madison spun collecting the cars of Dave Peoples and Jeff Welborn. The race finally started with four cars already in the pits, Starnes, Madison, Peoples and Tony Batt. Eddie Williams took the lead in three wide racing on the back straight and tried to pull away in the Tri-County Plumbing Nr. 3W. As the cars battled for position, 12th starting Wester was moving up. The yellow flag waved again on the tenth lap when fourth place Richard McGibboney got spun in turn two. Wester was up to second in his T-N-T Truck Parts / D&W Towing and Recovery Nr. 12W. On the restart he raced Williams side by side through the third and fourth turn to take the lead. The race was cut short by two laps because the excessive yellows put the race over the time limit. Wester held his lead to take his first win of the year. Rick McCommas got past Williams on the last lap for second, a move that earned the 19th starting McCommas his fourth Timber Wolf Racing Hard Charger Award of the season. Fourth behind Williams was Clyde Dunn, Jr. with Tom Lorenz taking fifth. Lorenz in the Smiley’s Racing Nr. 84 and McGibboney in the Baber’s Garage / Outlaw Fabrication Nr. 19 won the twin B mains. The heat races were won by Wester, Gailley in the Stanley Commission Company / Tommy G’s Welding Nr. 50D, Welborn in the Country Kids Day Care / Mowtime Nr. 19J and Madison in the Valvoline / S-Line Products Nr. 98. Madison and Bobby Ruffin had a great race in their heat with Madison winning by just a couple inches. Billy Fronterhouse in the Precision Graphics / CD Hemderson Nr. 5 won the trophy dash.

Keith Walker led every lap of the USA sprint car feature Saturday night, his second win this year.  Linda Fields Photo

Rain early Saturday and cloudy skies made the track fast, but soft by race time. When the USA sprint cars took the track they started digging ruts in the soft spots. Keith Walker ran a great race in his Leo Walker Paint & Body / Quality Powder Coating Nr. 52, diving low in turn two to take the lead on the opening lap and never looking back in the caution free race. Fifteen laps into the 20-lap feature Walker closed up on the back of the field, but he had such a comfortable margin that he was able to slow slightly and still win the feature by six car lengths. Bobby Huddleston in the Harvill Industries / Graphic Wonder Nr. 44X was a strong second all race. Walker and Huddleston won the heat races. The battle was for third as Brandon Erwin, Kevin Ramey and Matt Clevenger were three wide on the back straight and entering turn three on the final lap. The trio ran great, just inches apart. No one gave anything, and no one made a mistake. Rather than a big wreck, the three drivers finished right next to each other, Erwin third, Ramey fourth and Clevenger fifth, in a great race.

Michael Murphy and his wife Angie celebrate his street stock victory Saturday night. Murphy is the street stock points leader. Linda Fields Photo

The street stocks also had a very competitive feature, but Flat Tire was the most dominate part of the race. Johnny Points took the early lead in his Nr. 16. On the fourth lap Arin Lawrence took the lead in his Advocare by Maureen Nr. 9L. As the sixth lap ended a flat tire put him into the turn four wall. Walter Dorsett took over the lead in his R&D Racing / Nikon Dallas Nr. 31. Two more cautions came quickly for spins caused by flat tires. Dorsett held the lead until his right rear tire started to go down. Chuck Hall took over the lead in the Speed Pro Signs/ PoolTech Nr. 7. Right after taking the white flag, Hall’s right rear let go and he went sideways in turn two. Street stock points leader Murphy was in position and took the lead and the checkered flag in his Fernandez G.M.C - Pontiac - Buick / Crawford Automotive Nr. 21. Trandel White had his best run in a month to finish second, and Mark Reedy showed how much he has improved lately with a strong third place. Michael Grubbs also ran a good race to finish fourth with Mike Deaver in fifth. Tim McManus in the Seldom Open Paint & Body / F&J Construction Nr. 29, Reedy in the Shamrock Pest Control / Town East Transmission Nr. 5 and Jimmy Luker in the Jeanie’s Auto Parts / Scott’s Tire Nr. 34 won the heats.

Skip O'Neal is having his best season at Devil's Bowl with his fifth late model feature win in the Urban Fire Protection Nr. 8 Saturday night. O'Neal leads the late model points race. - Linda Fields Photo

Skip O’Neal in the Urban Fire Protection / Corbin TV Nr. 8 is the fastest late model driver this past month. He won his fifth feature on the season and padded his points lead in the process. After winning his heat race, O’Neal’s point average put him on the fourth row for the 15-lap feature. Ronnie Welborn had the pole and led the cars down to the green flag. He pulled ahead in the R&R Welding / Baxter & Sons Elevator Nr. 77 to lead the opening laps. The leaders were side by side with Welborn trying to protect his lead. That lasted until the fifth lap when the contact cut down one of Welborn’s tires. When Welborn slowed suddenly, O’Neal went past three cars to take the lead. After the race resumed, O’Neal quickly pulled out to a ten car length lead. The three wide battle for second brought out the next caution on the 12th lap when Brad Zimmerman crashed into a lapped car as he, Harry Hronas and Tom Lorenz tried to get past. Lorenz and Hronas escaped the crash and on the restart it was Lorenz getting past Hronas for second. Fourth at the finish line was Ronnie Long with Britt Ables taking fifth. Darren Ellis won the other heat race in his Quaker State / Blueprint Service of Plano Nr. 23.
