O'Neal Continues to Dominate Devil’s Bowl Late Models

Mesquite, TX (July 20, 2002) - Skip O'Neal claimed his sixth late model feature win of the year at Devil's Bowl Speedway Saturday night. Kevin Ramey edged Keith Walker to win the USA sprint car feature. Bobby Ruffin led the USA modifieds to the checkered flag. Travis Pace topped the street stocks for his second win of the season.

Domination is the only way to describe Skip O’Neal’s performance in the late model class at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in the past two months. Saturday night he claimed his sixth late model feature win in the Urban Fire Protection / Barnsco Construction Materials Nr. 8. The late model field took the green flag for their 15-lap feature with typical three wide racing. Jeff McGibboney paced the first lap in the McGibboney Chassis / M&M Racing Nr. 19. First heat race winner Jimmy Goodwin pulled his Gatlin Motors / SpeedPro Signs Nr. 12 past McGobboney on the next lap. O’Neal was running eighth on the third lap when James Williams, Britt Ables and Steve Trevathan got together on the back straight. That moved O’Neal up to fifth. On the restart, when Harry Hronas dove to the bottom to take second from McGibboney, O’Neal had a clear shot around the top of turns one and two to move up to third. Brad Zimmerman spun a lap later. The field restarted, but Zimmerman and second heat race winner Tom Lorenz in the Red Line Raceway / Stan Hopkins Company Nr. 122 made contact. The second restart showed O’Neal the line he needed, and he flew around the top of the first and second turn to pull past Goodwin on the back straight. Another caution on the ninth lap slowed the field. Goodwin stayed close to O’Neal as the race resumed. The pair were just a few car lengths apart for the rest of the race. Goodwin tracked O’Neal and made his move in turn four on the last lap. Diving to the bottom of the turn, Goodwin actually led coming out of turn four, but O’Neal’s momentum at the top of the track helped him pull ahead of Goodwin as they raced to the checkered flag. O’Neal took the win by just a couple feet. Third behind Goodwin was Ronnie Long with Britt Ables fourth and McGibboney fifth.

Kevin Ramey took his first win in the Harvill Industries Nr. 55 after a tight battle with Keith Walker.  Linda Fields Photo

Kevin Ramey started driving the Harvill Industries / Kendall Oil Nr. 55 a few weeks ago. He has worked with the car, and Saturday had everything working perfectly for his third win of the year, his first in the Nr. 55. George White won the first heat in the Builders Electric / Swofford Electric Nr. 1. He started on the pole and charged into the early lead. Second heat winner Keith Walker in the Leo Walker Paint & Body/ Quality Powder Coating Nr. 52 pulled up to challenge White by the fourth lap. Racing side by side, Walker had the inside line. The pair made contact while trying to lap a slower car and Walker pulled into the lead. White stayed close to Walker as Ramey battled past trophy dash winner Brandon Erwin in the Lake Kiowa dot com / Sign Guy Graphics Nr. 5E to take fifth. Ramey worked through the field to fourth. White closed on Walker and was making a bid for the lead when he spun on the 15th lap. Ramey moved to second after the restart with a diving slide job through turn three. He closed to a car length behind Walker and just before the white flag flew, again dove to the bottom of turn three and slid across the track in front of Walker. On the final trip around the half-mile clay oval, Walker tried to duplicate Ramey’s move, but could not make the pass, having to settle for second. Third was Matt Clevenger with Brian Harvill and Charlie Brown rounding out the top five.

Bobby Ruffin topped the USA modified feature Saturday night. Linda Fields Photo

The top 22 of the 37 modifieds at Devil’s Bowl lined up to for the checkered flag in their 15-lap A feature. Bobby Ruffin lined up tenth in his Mooney Racing Engines / Unlimited Race Products Nr. 121. The opening lap was fast and furious with three and four wide racing. Several cars tangled with other cars and David Gailley came out leading the pack. The first caution came on the second lap when Kevin Hazelip spun, and collected several other cars. Two laps later the red flag flew for Dave Peoples. He was running in the top five when he slipped over the cushion on the back straight. Trying to get back on the track without losing too many positions, Peoples was hard in the throttle when his car got into the tire in turn three protecting cars from impact with the billboard. Peoples took a hard flip, but crawled away from the race car without serious injury. After the race resumed, Gailley stayed out front in the Stanley Commission Company / Tommy G’s Welding Nr. 50D. The top three cars were just a couple car lengths apart when the yellow flew again on the 14th lap for Frank Rose’s spin. Just moments before Gailley had surrendered the lead to Ruffin. Gailley pulled into the pits with a flat tire. Ruffin lined up for the two lap dash to the checkered flag. Chuck Beusch ran second almost the entire race and finished behind Ruffin. Third was second heat race winner Tom Lorenz in the Smiley’s Race Car Products / Hoosier Tire Southwest Nr. 84. Randy Kirkland had a good run to claim fourth and Rowdy Starnes was fifth, who also won the fourth heat in his Starnes Trucking / Cain’s Machine Shop Nr. 50X. The other two heats went to Rick McCommas in the B&H Painting / Duckworth Asphalt & Paving Nr. 39 and Ronnie Carty in the Southwest Engines / Speciality Automotive Nr. 71. Charles Lasater in the Acelco Services Nr. 17 and Frank Rose in the Sherrell Heating & Air Nr. 18 won the twin B mains.

Travis Pace ran a great race to take the street stock victory Saturday night. - Linda Fields Photo

Things got wild at the start of the street stock feature when Chuck Hall went around in turn one at the start. After the restart Mike Walls led the first lap in his Nr. 38 with Walter Dorsett taking the lead a lap later in the R&D Racing / Nikon Dallas Nr. 31. Pace had taken the Gary’s Machine Shop / Schramm’s Ammo & Weapons Nr. 17 from seventh at the start to fourth by the end of the second lap. Dorsett stayed out front as Pace moved up to take second a lap later. After another caution the pair put on a great battle, trading the lead a couple times on the sixth lap before Pace took the lead on the sixth lap. Catching lapped traffic on the tenth lap, Pace soon had to contend with the slower car and Dorsett trying to regain the lead. Two more cautions in the final two laps gave Pace a clear track for the final run to the checkered flag, where he finished with Dorsett right on his rear bumper. Michael Murphy was a strong third, followed by Ricky Wycough and Mike Deaver. Walls won the first street stock heat with Dorsett battling all the way to the checkered flag to win the second heat race.

Next Saturday, July 27, Devil’s Bowl will host Christmas in July.
