Carty Claims First Modified Win At Devil’s Bowl Mesquite, TX (July 20, 2002) - Ronnie Carty made the right moves at the right times to take his first USA modified feature win at Devil’s Bowl Speedway Saturday night. Darren Ellis swept the late models, winning his heat, the trophy dash and the A feature. Kevin Ramey won the USA sprint car feature, his fourth this year. Chuck Hall had an almost perfect race on his way to his second street stock win this year.
Ronnie Carty has worked hard to become competitive in the crowded USA modified class at Devil’s Bowl this season. He had finished in the top ten on six of his previous seven A feature starts this year. Saturday night he lined up on the inside of the fourth row as the 20 USA modifieds took the green flag. Polesitter Bryan Bell seriously jumped the start, but soon lost the advantage as Steve Sickels was able to hold the low line through turn two and take the lead on the back straight. Gary Lowe narrowly avoided disaster when his car launched into the air after contacting Bell’s tire. Both settled down and kept racing. The race slowed for the first time on the fourth lap when Charles Lasater spun in turn three and Chuck Beusch could not avoid the stopped car. After the race resumed it was a tight battle up front as Sickels was challenged by Jerry Cowart. Sickels could pull away on the straight, but Cowart was faster through the turns. Three cautions on laps seven and eight kept the field very close behind Sickels in the Troy’s Used Cars of Garland / Duane Swindell Nr. 50. His luck disappeared on the next restart when Sickels got sideways charging into turn three. Kevin Hazelip could not miss Sickels’ car and the contact pushed Sickels all the way around. Hazelip lined up in front for the restart as Cowart was also involved in the crash, but it was Carty in the Southwest Engines / Speciality Automotive Nr. 71 making the move on the restart and taking the lead. Through five cautions and several spins, Carty had avoided major damage to his car and was out front. B main winner Tom Lorenz, driving the Nr. 88X for this weekend, had moved up to challenge Carty in the final laps, but had nothing for the DeSoto driver. Third was Rowdy Starnes, who had to start on the back after a lap 7 crash. Rusty Trevathan was fourth and Hazelip in the J&J Construction / RRC Racing Nr. 74 was fifth. The heat race victories went to Sickels, Randy Kirkland in the Reliable Plumbing / Baber’s Garage Nr. 77 and Jeff Welborn in the Country Kids Day Care / Big G Auto Supply Nr. 19J. The final laps of the first heat as Jeff Welborn fought to hold off his older brother Ronnie was an exciting battle to the finish. David Gailley was uninjured after rolling his modified in a crash in the B main. Lorenz won the Timber Wolf Racing Hard Charger Award for the second straight week in his run from 16th to 2nd.
Ellis had his Quaker State / Sport City Toyota Nr. 23 dialed in perfectly Saturday, coming from the fifth row to win his heat race and from the back to win the trophy dash. That set him up to win the $100 Parks Auto Sales Sweep Bonus if he could win the feature. With a field of 20 fast late models on hand, Ellis had his work cut out for him. After the green flag flew it was Brad Zimmerman in the Steve’s Portable Welding Nr. 11X taking the lead. Ellis started ninth and quickly moved up to third after the second lap. The full field kept things exciting as the leaders caught lapped traffic by the sixth lap. Zimmerman had to slow with a car in his line and Ellis went low in turn four to pass Zimmerman and Steve Trevathan to take the lead. Two laps later, Ellis almost crashed when a lapped car cut down in front of him forcing him to jam on the brakes. Zimmerman almost regained the lead, but Ellis held on. Continuing to work through lapped cars Ellis took the win with one lapped car between himself and Zimmerman. Third was Trevathan in a fast caution free race. Jimmy Goodwin was fourth and second heat race winner Ronnie Long was fifth in the Town East Ford / Enduro Powder Coating Nr. 28.
The sprint car feature was also fast, furious and lapped cars played a role in deciding the outcome. Rawdy Hull took the lead on the start in his Wayne Hull Construction / All Trucks & Equipment Nr. 8H. Ramey and Greg Young quickly moved up to the top three after getting past the fast car of Claud Estes. Two cautions slowed the first half of the race, but Hull stayed out front as the leaders passed slower cars. Ramey took second on the ninth lap and closed up on Hull’s rear bumper. Ramey came along side a couple times but could not pull ahead of Hull. On the 15th lap the leaders approached a lapped car entering turn three. Hull had to check up and alter his line to go under the lapped car as they entered the turn. Ramey did not hesitate, he charged around the outside, barely missing the lapped car which turned away from Hull. Ramey kept his momentum and easily took the lead in the middle of the corner. Ramey stayed on the gas and pulled away to take the win in the Burkham Construction / Smiley’s Racing Nr. 7M. Hull was second with Young a close third. Skip Wilson and Marvin Lough rounded out the top five. Estes in the Colling Chevron / Quik Couriers Nr. 74E and Paul White in the Builder’s Electric / Swofford Electric Supply Nr. 1 won the heat races.
Hall had a very good season last year, and won a feature early this season, but little things and close competition have kept him out of victory lane recently. Crashes on the start and second attempt to start the race put four cars in the pits before a lap was completed. Johnny Points led the opening lap, but Hall had avoided all the trouble and was fifth on the third restart. He went around the outside to take the lead in his Speed Pro Signs / Pratt Ltd Nr. 7. Another quick caution kept Hall from pulling away. Soon Hall was able to build a small lead while the battle for second raged behind him. Trandel White came up to take second after a close battle with Ricky Wycough. By the eighth lap, White was pulling even with Hall in the turns. When Travis Pace joined the battle, Hall was able to pull a couple car lengths ahead. Hall charged to the finish to take his first win since April with White and Pace splitting lapped cars to claim second and third. Mike Meeks, Jr. was fourth with Doug Smith fifth. Thomas Weeks ran away with the first heat in the Bobby Duncan Nr. 5X, with Jimmy Luker in the Jeanie’s Auto Parts / Scotts Tire Nr. 34 and Michael Grubbs in the Grubbs Motorsports / Graphics by Edge Nr. 00X taking the other heat wins.
