Experience and Luck Pay Off At Devil’s Bowl

Mesquite, TX (August 3, 2002) - Experienced drivers won all four feature races at Devil’s Bowl Speedway Saturday night, but it took a bit of luck to make it to victory lane. Brandon Erwin topped the USA sprint cars for the second time this year. Skip O’Neal won his seventh late model main. Both Rowdy Starnes and Travis Pace inherited the lead in their features when the leaders crashed. Their experience in avoiding the wrecks paved the way for Starnes’ fourth modified win and Pace’s third street stock victory this year.

Brandon Erwin was the fastest driver on the track in his Koin Kar Wash / Lake Kiowa.Com Nr. 5E in the 20 lap USA sprint car main. Starting from the outside of the third row, Erwin found the fastest groove on the challenging track. The race was caution free with Charlie Brown taking the lead on the start in his Koin Kar Wash / Sewer Service Company Nr. 72. Brown raced ahead of the field while Erwin moved up to take third on the fifth lap. As Erwin battled past Paul White in the Swafford Electric Supply / Builders Electric Nr. 1, Brown was able to stay out front. However, once Erwin was clear, he quickly caught Brown and took the lead on 14th lap. White took second in turn four on the 16th lap and Kevin Ramey in the Harvill Industries / Kendall Oil Nr. 7M claimed third from Brown on the 18th lap. Brown finished fourth with Rawdy Hull fifth in the Wayne Hull Construction / All Trucks & Equipment Nr. 8H taking fifth. Patrick Ward was uninjured in a devastating crash on the fifth lap of his heat race. He tagged the outside wall and flew into the inside wall on the front straight, flipping hard. The car was destroyed in the crash. Paul White and George White in the Swafford Electric Supply / Builders Electric Nr. 10W won the heat races.

Seven feature wins this year for Skip O'Neal and the Urban Fire Protection / Barnsco Construction Materials Nr. 8 crew.  Linda Fields Photo

O’Neal started the Urban Fire Protection / Barnsco Construction Nr. 8 on the inside of the sixth row for the 15-lap late model main. Up front it was outside front row started Keith Darrow in the T.D.I./High Tech Signs Nr. 88 taking the early lead. An early caution slowed the race and the battle for the top spot was three wide on the third lap when Ronnie Long put the Town East Ford / Enduro Powder Coating Nr. 28 out front. O’Neal went from sixth to third in close racing on the fourth lap. Another caution flag allowed him to close up on Long’s rear bumper for the restart. After the green flag waved O’Neal went around the top of turns one and two and climbed to second. A final caution on the eighth lap bunched the field. O’Neal was chasing Long for most of the race, but finally pulled up on the back of Long’s car on the 11th lap. The next time past the flag stand O’Neal got a run on the outside and took the lead going into turn one. Long was second at the checkered flag behind O’Neal. Third was Steve Trevathan in the Hawk Aviation / Mesquite Metal Nr. 21 with Darrow fourth and Jimmy Goodwin recovering from a eighth lap spin to take fifth in the Gatlin Motors / RC Drywall Nr. 12.Darren Ellis in the Blue Print Service of Plano / Quaker State Nr. 23 and Jeff McGibboney in the McGibboney Chassis / M&M Racing Nr. 19 won the late model heat races.

Rowdy Starnes took the points lead with his victory in the USA modified feature Saturday night. Linda Fields Photo

A blown engine on Rick McCommas car in the heat race and Starnes victory in the USA modified feature put Starnes back in the points lead. Starting in the 15th position and winning the feature also earned Starnes his second Timber Wolf Racing Hard Charger Award of the season. When the green flag dropped on the 20 fastest USA modifieds, Gary Lowe came out of the three wide charge through the first corner to take the lead in his Nr. 23. The battle was close until third place Frank Rose spun on the fourth lap. Chuck Beusch moved up to third for the restart, and after the first restart was waved off due to a crash in the back, Beusch was able to ride the rim around one and two to take the lead in his CBX Racing / Family Chiropractic Nr. 13. Starnes had been lucky with the crashes and was up to fourth. Crashes were the order of the day, not the least of which was on lap nine when Jimmy Goodwin got into the back of Tom Lorenz in turn one. The six car pileup only knocked out one car despite the damage. Goodwin was sent to the pits for rough driving by promoter Lanny Edwards, and the car was disqualified for the night when his team told him to go back on the track despite Edwards orders.

Starnes luck held out on the restart when Beusch lost the handle in turn two. Both Starnes and third place Richard McGibboney missed the wreck which collected three other cars. The restart put Starnes first and McGibboney second, with last week’s winner Ronnie Carty third. The close racing and crashed had reduced the field to ten cars as the final seven laps ran caution free. McGibboney held second in the Baber’s Garage / Smiley’s Racing Products Nr. 19, with Carty third in the Southwest Engines / Speciality Automotive Nr. 71. B main winner Clyde Dunn, Jr. was fourth in the Dunn Brothers / Young Chevrolet Racing Nr. 88 with Rusty Trevathan rounding out the top five in the Foster Racing / R&B Motorsports Nr. 51. McGibboney won the second heat, with father and son Jay and Richard Miller winning the other two heat races in their Jeanie’s Motorsports / Rick Shipp Rebuilders / Bailey’s Crankshaft Nr. 34 & 23Z modifieds.

Pace put the Gary’s Machine Shop / Action Speed Products Nr. 17 into victory lane for the second time this year with a little luck and a lot of dodging trouble. Pat Walls grabbed the early lead on the street stock 12-lap feature in his Walls Racing Nr. 39. A lap later it was fourth starting Tim McManus in the F&J Construction / Seldom Open Paint & Body Nr. 29 going around the outside of turn two to take the lead. Pace was seventh in a tight battle. Trophy dash winner Doug Smith took second in his Stack’s Hamburger / Satpro Networks Nr. 4. He closed the margin with McManus and the two put on a show for several laps racing just inches apart. Pace was up to third and closing on the battling leaders as the eighth lap ended. Smith got his best run out of turn four on that lap and pulled to the inside of McManus as they crossed the start / finish line. Going into turn one, Smith slid hard into the side of McManus car. The collision caused McManus to turn left driving both cars into the infield, with Smith crashing into one of the barrier tires. This gave Pace a clear track on the outside to take the lead. McManus car was too badly damaged to continue and he pulled to the pits while Smith rejoined the race, at the back of the field. There was no caution flag and Pace was able to lead to the checkered flag with Mike Meeks, Jr. taking second in his Meeks Paint & Body / Ernie’s Auto Motors Nr. 37. Third went to point leader Michael Murphy in his Fernandez G.M.C. - Pontiac - Buick / Crawford Automotive Nr. 21 with Mark Ross running a good race for fourth in the Tommy G’s Welding / East Gate Automotive Nr. 8. Walter Dorsett took fifth in his R&D Racing / Nikon of Dallas Nr. 31.Meeks and Ross won the heat races.
