Grubbs Takes First Street Stock Win At Devil’s Bowl Mesquite, TX (August 17, 2002) - Michael Grubbs claimed his first street stock A feature victory at Devil’s Bowl Speedway Saturday night, fighting off a past champion and the current points leader on his way to the checkered flag. Rawdy Hull led the USA sprint cars from flag to flag. Clyde Dunn, Jr. claimed his second USA modified feature win this year. Darren Ellis topped the late models.
When the green flag dropped on the 18 cars of the street stock feature, Grubbs was on the inside of the third row. Ryan Harris in the B. Ent. Trucking / Quinlan Auto Supply Nr. 55X took the early lead on the opening lap. The battle was three and four wide on the next lap with Tim McManus, Arin Lawrence and Grubb all fighting for the lead. Grubb put his RCI / Grubbs Motorsports Nr. 00X into the top spot on the third lap. Harris held second until the sixth lap when Doug Smith and points leader Michael Murphy took second and third. Grubbs had a 15 car length lead which was quickly erased by the caution flag when Mark Ross spun. On the restart there was a lot of contact in the battle for second, with Smith coming to a stop after a spin. That put Murphy and former Devil’s Bowl Street Stock champion Travis Pace right behind Grubbs with half the race unfinished. The final six laps were caution free with Murphy and Pace battling Grubbs every foot of the way to the checkered flag. Grubbs held off the challenges for his first victory at Devil’s Bowl, with Pace taking second in the last corner in the Gary’s Machine Shop / Action Speed Products Nr. 17 and Murphy third in his Fernandez G.M.C - Pontiac - Buick / Crawford Automotive Nr. 21. Fourth and fifth were Trandel White in the Garcia’s Lawn Care / Whitestar Trailers Nr. 10 and McManus in the Seldom Open Paint & Body / F&J Construction Nr. 29. Harris and Lawrence in the Advocare by Maureen Nr. 00 won the heat races.
Rawdy Hull took advantage of his outside front row starting spot in the 20-lap USA Sprint Car feature to grab the early lead and never look back on his way to his second victory this year. He pushed the Wayne Hull Construction / All Trucks & Equipment Nr. 8H into the lead by flying around the outside of turn one on the opening lap. Hull never looked back, and was not challenged until the only caution of the race flew on the 16th lap for Keith Walker’s spin in turn one. The only time Hull slowed was when he encountered lapped traffic midway through the race. Charlie Brown had held the second position since the start of the race, but problems developed with the Koin Kar Wash Nr. 72 on the restart, and Marvin Lough took the second spot in the Commercial Music / Smoke Pit Bar-B-Que Nr. 39. Hull charged out as the green flag waved to run to the checkered flag without a problem. Lough was second and Bob Ewell put the Foam Enterprises / Longhorn Urethane Contractors Nr. 85 under the final flag in third after starting at the back of the field. Brandon Erwin came on strong at the end of the race to claim fourth in the Forney Koin Kar Wash / Lake Kiowa.Com Nr. 5E and Skip Wilson took fifth in the Bubba’s Plumbing / Brook Hollow Rental Nr. 65. Hull won his heat race as did Brian Harvill in the Harvill Industries / Graphic Wonder Nr. 31B.
David Gailley won his heat race and the trophy dash in the Stanley Commission Company / Tommy G’s Welding Nr. 50D. That set him up with a chance to win the Park’s Auto Sales $100 Sweep Bonus if he could win the feature. Starting on the front row, Gailley took the early lead after a battle with Marc Madison. The first caution flew on the third lap after Ronnie Welborn stopped atop turn two. The USA modified action was tight with three wide battles all over the track while Gailley pulled away. The only thing to stop him was the caution flag, which flew on lap six. On the restart, Gailley tried to keep the lead, but Clyde Dunn, Jr. pulled around the outside to take the lead in his Smiley’s Racing Products / Dunn Brothers Nr. 88. Dunn was able to stay ahead of the other drivers by a few car lengths all the way to the checkered flag, with Rowdy Starnes taking second in the Starnes Trucking / Cain’s Machine Shop Nr. 50X. Randy Kirkland drove a very good race to take third in the Reliable Plumbing / Baber’s Garage Nr. 77. Rounding out the top five were points leader Rick McCommas in the B&H Painting / Duckworth Asphalt & Paving Nr. 39 and Tom Lorenz in the Smiley’s Racing Products / Hoosier Tire Southwest Nr. 88X. Lorenz won the Timber Wolf Racing Hard Charger Award by passing 14 cars after starting 19th. Starnes led every lap of the B main, while Richard Miller in the Jeanie’s Motorsports / Rick Shipp Rebuilders Nr. 23Z and Dave Peoples in the DaveCO Construction Nr. 11 won the other two heat races.
A large field of competitive late models took the green flag for their 15-lap feature with Ron Lane leading the opening lap in the Ron’s Racing / Lane Automotive Nr. 55 Mopar. Harry Hronas took the top spot on the next circuit in his Red Line Raceway / Performance Auto Supply Nr. 92. But the leaders were still racing three and four wide with Darren Ellis putting the eighth starting Quaker State / Blueprint Service of Plano Nr. 23 into the lead on the fourth lap. Ellis pulled away despite the spray of steam from his radiator overflow. As Ellis cruised to his third victory of the season, Hronas managed to hold on to second with Jimmy Goodwin battling every lap, but finishing third in the Gatlin Motors / Tony’s D&D Auto Parts Nr. 12. Fourth was Steve Trevathan in the Hawk Aviation / Top 10 Fun Raisers Nr. 21 and points leader Skip O’Neal took fifth in the Urban Fire Protection / Barnsco Construction Nr. 8. Ellis and Trevathan won the heat races.
