Weeks Sweeps Streets At Devil’s Bowl Mesquite, TX (September 14, 2002) - Thomas Weeks had his best night of the season at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Saturday, winning his heat race, the trophy dash and the street stock feature. Joe Edwards topped his first late model main. Dale Wester came from the seventh row to win the USA modified main. Bob Ewell claimed his third USA sprint car win this season.
Weeks is the defending street stock champion at Devil’s Bowl, but 2002 has not been kind to Weeks. He earned his first feature win of the year in the Bobby Duncan Nr. 5X three weeks ago. On a very fast track, Weeks quickly went to the front of his heat race for his eighth heat win this year. He started on the third row of the trophy dash and pulled into the lead to top that race. That made him eligible for a $100 bonus from Parks Auto Sales if he could win the feature. Starting on the outside fo the third row, Weeks was fast from the start and made up several positions racing through turn three on the first lap. Mark Ross led the opening lap in the Tommy G’s Welding / East Gate Automotive Nr. 8 with Gayla Jones second and Weeks third. Taking second in the next corner, Weeks was alongside Ross the next time they crossed the stripe and took the lead on the third circuit. The first caution flew on the fourth lap when Mike Meeks, Jr. and Walter Dorsett got together, with Dorsett spinning. Weeks started building his lead again when the green flag waved, but Travis Pace soon moved up to challenge for the lead. The pair were side by side on the restart after the next caution on the sixth lap. Weeks held off the challenge and managed to build a two car length lead by the time the white flag flew. Weeks captured the win, with Pace in the Gary’s Machine Shop / Scharmm’s Ammo & Weapons Nr. 17 finishing second. Third was Trandel White in the Garcia’s Lawn Care / Whitestar Trailers Nr. 10, with Arin Lawrence fourth in the Advocare by Maureen Nr. 9L and Michael Murphy taking fifth in the Fernandez G.M.C. - Pontiac - Buick / Crawford Automotive Nr. 21. Michael Grubbs won the other heat race in the Grubbs Motorsports / Fullen’s Crankshaft Service Nr. 00X.
Joe Edwards has made several starts over the past few years in the late models, driving cars for Harry Hronas. Most years Edwards runs about a half dozen races. Saturday was his third run this year, and the Red Line Raceway / Performance Auto Supply Nr. 991 was perfect. Edwards was fast in his heat, but had to settle for third as Darren Ellis topped that race in the Quaker State / Sport City Toyota Nr. 23. Ron Lane put the Mopar out front to win the other heat in his Ron’s Racing / Lane’s Automotive Nr. 55. Edwards started the late model 15-lap main on the pole. The yellow flew as the first lap was completed when Ellis stopped at the top of turn three. After Ellis’ car was towed to the pits, the race resumed and Edwards was perfect. The caution flew again at the halfway mark. On the restart Edwards pulled away with second place Jimmy Goodwin getting shuffled back to fifth. Edwards charged to his first late model win at Devil’s Bowl with Steve Trevathan in the Hawk Aviation / Forney Auto Tech Nr. 21 second after a great battle with Skip O’Neal in the Urban Fire Protection / Barnsco Construction Nr. 8. Fourth at the checkered flag was Goodwin in the Gatlin Motors / RC Drywall Nr. 12 and Ronnie Long was fifth in the Town East Ford / Enduro Powder Coating Nr. 28. Randy Kirkland’s tough season continued Saturday when his Reliable Plumbing / Baber’s Garage Nr. 77 suffered a flat on the final lap of his heat race. Kirkland won the race, but the rear end locked up and spun him into the inside wall. Kirkland’s team worked hard and barely completed the repairs before the feature. Skip O’Neal topped the second USA modified heat in his Urban Fire Protection Nr. 8. Billy Fronterhouse won the third heat in the Precision Graphics / Euroworks Nr. 5. Rick McCommas won the B main, but problems with the B&H Painting / Performax Trailers Nr. 39 forced him to miss the feature. Dale Wester started the 15-lap feature on the outside of the seventh row. Up front polesitter Chris Locke ran side by side with Fronterhouse before edging ahead to lead the opening lap. He led the field in the Broadband Specialists / Locke Ventures Nr. 15 until the first caution flew on the fifth lap after Marc Madison got knocked off turn three in close racing. David Gailley muscled past Fronterhouse for second on the restart. On the seventh lap Fronterhouse got loose in turn two, Richard Miller was trapped with cars on both sides and could not avoid crashing into Fronterhouse. Randy Lynch, Ronnie Carty, Mike Goodson and Clyde Dunn, Jr. all crashed into the stopped cars. Miller and Dunn had their cars taken back to the pits on the hook. Goodson dropped out. The others were able to continue the race.
Wester had been running tenth in his T - N - T Truck Parts / CBX Racing & Machine Nr. 12W before the crash. He moved up to fifth on the restart. O’Neal moved up to second and tried to challenge Locke for the lead. The cars rubbed and O’Neal went wide in turn four. Wester seized the opportunity and moved up to second. Wester pulled even with Locke on the 12th lap and took the lead on the next trip around the famed half mile clay oval. Wester edged ahead to capture his second win of the year with Locke taking second, his best finish this year. O’Neal finished third in his second feature of the night. Dave Peoples brought the DaveCo Construction / Aries Spa of Rockwall Nr. 11 up to finish fourth. Kirkland finished fifth in his repaired Nr. 77. Wester won the Timber Wolf Racing Hard Charger Award by passing 13 cars on his way to victory.
Ewell’s third feature win of the season in the Foam Enterprises / Longhorn Urethane Contractors Nr. 85 was a fast caution free race. After winning his heat race, Ewell started fourth for the 20-lap feature. Larry Long led the opening lap in the Town East Ford / Enduro Powder Coating Nr. 28, but Ewell claimed the top spot on the fourth circuit. Ewell was very fast and pulled away easily. George White took second place on the fifth lap and tried to catch Ewell, but the Builders Electric/ Swofford Electric Supply Nr. 10W could not close the gap. Ewell was perfect on the fast tacky track and White needed lapped traffic to help him narrow the lead. Ewell’s years of sprint car experience helped him slip past the lapped cars, and though White pushed as hard as he could, he was six car lengths back when Ewell took the checkered flag. Long with third with Brandon Erwin fourth in the Koin Kar Wash / Lake Kiowa dot com Nr. 5E. Kevin Ramey was fifth in the Harvill Industries / Kendall Oil Nr. 7M. Keith Walker won the other heat race in his borrowed Nr. 7J.
