White Captures Sprint Victory At Devil’s Bowl

Mesquite, TX (September 21, 2002) - Paul White charged to the front and won his first USA sprint car feature of the year at Devil’s Bowl Speedway Saturday night. Otherwise it was a night for experience as the other three feature winners locked up their 2002 championships - Rowdy Starnes in USA modifieds, Skip O’Neal in late models and Travis Pace in street stocks.

Paul White (l) is interviewed by Harry Hronas after winning his first USA sprint car feature of the season Saturday night.

White has had the most disappointing season of any driver who frequents Devil’s Bowl. He runs the speedway about half the season in his Builder’s Electric / Swofford Electric Supply Nr. 1, with the rest of the year devoted to the USAC Silver Crown series. In 2001 White became the first driver from Texas to win the USAC Silver Crown since A.J. Foyt. A crash at Phoenix at the start of the 2002 season was just the start of a bad year, both on the Silver Crown circuit and at Devil’s Bowl. Just last week, White got caught in a crash on the start of his heat race and slammed into the inside wall, tearing up the front end of his sprinter. This week everything finally came together for White as he started on the second row of the 20-lap feature after winning his heat race. Keith Walker held off Larry Long as the cars charged down the front straight after taking the green flag. Walker pulled away on a tricky track in his Leo Walker Paint & Body / Quality Powder Coating Nr. 52. The tacky track had a few ruts and Walker had to pick his line carefully. On the sixth lap he caught the slower cars and had to alter his line to pass those cars. White had gotten past Long on the second lap and was a few car lengths behind Walker. On the eighth lap White charged into the lead as Walker was having trouble with a brake on his car. Moments later the race slowed for Matt Clevenger’s stopped car in turn four. On the restart Walker was second, but ran over the cone on the front straight. He was sent to the back, which left Skip Wilson in second. White had no trouble pulling away as the race resumed to claim his first win this year. Wilson was second in his Forney Koin Kar Wash / Bubba’s Plumbing Nr. 65. Long, who won the other heat race, was third in the Town East Ford / Evans Grinding Nr. 28. Brandon Erwin in the Lake Kiowa dot com / Sign Guy Graphics Nr. 5E and Brian Harvill in the Harvill Industries / Graphic Wonder Nr. 31B were fourth and fifth.

Rowdy Starnes captured Saturday night's USA Modified feature at Devil's Bowl to lockup the 2002 Championship.

Rowdy Starnes locked up his third straight USA modified championship with a strong victory Saturday night. The Starnes Trucking / Cain’s Machine Shop Nr. 50X was perfect and Starnes drove a great race on his way to the win. Johnny Hitt took the lead in the Nr. 90 on the start but surrendered the lead a lap later to the Nr. K2 Kustom Machine Shop / ABC Auto Salvage entry driven by Kevin DeLashaw. The first caution flew on the fourth lap when a multi-car crash in turn three collected last week’s winner Dale Wester, along with Chris Locke and Dave Peoples. Starnes was eighth after starting 15th in the 23 car field. Richard Miller had his car falter in turn three on the next lap, and Rick McCommas could not avoid the slowing car. The damage forced McCommas out of the race, and locked up Starnes’ championship. McCommas needed Starnes to drop out early and to have a perfect night to keep his chances of winning the title alive for next week’s finale. DeLashaw pulled away when the green flag flew again and was running good until the eighth lap when his car broke and he pulled off the track. Ronnie Carty in the Southwest Engines / Speciality Automotive Nr. 71 took over the lead. Starnes had worked through the pack and took over second when DeLashaw pulled off. Carty and Starnes put on a great race until the 13th lap when Carty hit a rut in turn one and went up the track. Starnes grabbed the lead and charged ahead. He claimed the victory by two car lengths. Running from 15th on the start to first at the finish earned Starnes his fourth Timber Wolf Racing Hard Charger Award of the season. Carty was a strong second, with Jay Miller in the Jeanie’s Motorsports / Rich Shipp Rebuilders Nr. 34 taking third. Skip O’Neal drove the Urban Fire Protection / Barnsco Construction Materials Nr. 8 modified to fourth place with trophy dash winner Randy Kirkland taking fifth in the Reliable Plumbing / Baber’s Garage Nr. 77. David Gailley in the Stanley Commission Company / Tommy G’s Welding Nr. 50D, DeLashaw and Frank Rose in the Sherril Heating & Air Nr. 18 won the three modified heat races.

Skip O'Neal won his eighth late model main of the season and claimed his first championship at Devil's Bowl Speedway.

O’Neal had a good run in the modified, but had a much better night in the Urban Fire Protection / Barnsco Construction Materials Nr. 8 late model, winning his eighth feature of the year and locking up his first championship at Devil’s Bowl. Ronnie Welborn jumped out to the early lead in the R&R Welding / Baxter & Sons Elevator Company Nr. 77. A second lap crash involved several cars with Steve Trevathan and Ronnie Long having some of the worst damage. Welborn led the field to the green flag for the restart with O’Neal back in fifth position. It was only a couple laps before O’Neal was challenging Welborn for the lead and pulled past on the front straight moments later. The rest of the race was really two events, O’Neal ran away from everybody. Of course the tight battle for second helped keep the competition behind O’Neal, but he was fast and perfect charging to the finish with a quarter lap lead at the checkered flag. Welborn fought to hold second, setting up three and four wide racing for the runner-up spot. Jimmy Goodwin finally pulled past the group to take second in the Gatlin Motors / Tony’s D&D Auto Parts Nr. 12. Joe Edwards had his second straight top finish in the RedLine Raceway / First State Bank Nr. 991 running third. Britt Ables ran a great race and finished fourth in the Ables Auto / Grubbs Motorsports Nr. 51. Ronnie Long took fifth in the Town East Ford / Enduro Powder Coating Nr. 28. Edwards and Welborn won the heat races.

Travis Pace extended his street stock points lead with his fourth feature win this year Saturday night.

Travis Pace had to finish in front of Michael Murphy to close in on the 2002 street stock championship, and winning the feature Saturday night virtually assured the driver of the Gary’s Machine Shop / Schramm’s Ammo & Weapons Nr. 17 of his second street stock championship. Starting on the inside of the sixth row, Pace had to work his way to the front as Mark Ross set the pace for the opening lap in the Tommy G’s Welding / East Gate Automotive Nr. 8. Mike Walls took the lead on the second lap in his Nr. 38. Thomas Weeks made it a three car wide battle for the lead by the fifth lap. Weeks found an opening at the bottom of turn four in this heat race and made the same move in the feature, unfortunately Weeks had problems and dropped out. Walls led the field under the green flag after two quick cautions at mid-race, but Pace had worked up to third. On the second restart Pace pulled around the outside and took the lead on the back straight when Walls’ car faltered coming out of turn two. Walter Dorsett pushed the R&D Racing / Nikon Dallas Nr. 31 as hard as he could but had to settle for second behind Pace. Chuck Hall made a very good run in his Speed Pro Signs / Pratt Ltd Nr. 7 to finish third. Michael Grubbs was a strong fourth in his Grubbs Motorsports / RCI Nr. 00X with Trandel White taking fifth in the Garcia’s Lawn Care / Whitestar Trailers Nr. 10. Pace, Weeks and Arin Lawrence in the Advocare by Maureen Nr. 9L won the heat races.

The street stock cars made a second appearance on the track in their annual mechanics race with Robert Ross putting Mark Ross’s Tommy G’s Welding / East Gate Automotive Nr. 8 in victory lane ahead of Brandon Leopolos in Jimmy Luker’s Jeanie’s Auto Parts / Scotts Tire Nr. 34.
