Johnson Captures Devil’s Bowl Nationals Prelim

Mesquite, TX (October 4, 2002) - Wayne Johnson of Oklahoma City grabbed the lead on the second lap and ran away to win Friday night’s United Expresslines ASCS Outlaw Sprint Car preliminary feature on the opening night of the 9th Annual Devil’s Bowl Nationals. Johnson topped a field of 52 ASCS outlaw sprint cars drivers from a dozen states. Paul White dominated the USA Modified feature.

Larry Neighbors of Oklahoma City in the Neighbors Coffee Service Nr. 29N was the fastest in time trials with a lap of 14.653 on the Devil’s Bowl half mile oval. The 52 ASCS sprinters lined up in six heat races with the top three from each heat qualifying for the A feature. The top five drivers in time were inverted in each heat race. On the fast track passing was difficult early with several of the faster drivers, including Neighbors, not qualifying and being forced into the twin B main last chance races.

Paul White of Temple won the first heat easily in his Builders Electric / Swofford Electric Supply Nr. 1W. The second heat had one start waved off. On the restart, J.D. Johnson of Goddard, KS took the early lead, but slowed suddenly coming out of turn two. Keith Walker of Irving, TX could not avoid Johnson and hit the right rear tire. That launched Walker high into the air. He flipped five times, tearing the entire front end off the race car. Walker was not injured, but the RaceSuds.com / Leo Walker Paint & Body Nr. 52W was destroyed. Matt Clevenger of Flower Mound, TX took the lead on the restart and charged to win the heat in his H&H Steel / Napa of Lewisville and Grapevine Nr. 31. Carthage, MO driver Toby Brown won the third heat in the ABF Truck Rebuilders / ABF Graphix & Designs Nr. 61A. On the start of the fourth heat race Wayne Pennington of Orrick, MO got wide exiting turn four. As he corrected his car slid into Pete Butler, Mablevale, AR, and the contact sent Pennington straight into the front straight outside wall. The car flipped after the very hard hit but Pennington was uninjured. Danny Jennings of Norman, OK, won the heat race driving the Bishop Racing Components / AFCO Shocks Nr. 61J. Kevin Ramey of Fort Worth won the fifth heat race in his Burkham Construction Nr. 7M after a duel with Tim Crawley of Mablevale, AR. Darren Stewart of Bixby, OK in the Nr. 91 won a three wide battle to the finish line in the sixth heat ahead of Bob Ewell, Forney, TX and Cody Branchcomb, Sapulpa, OK.

Neighbors started on the front of the first B main and led flag to flag despite four cautions and competition from Gary Wright, Hooks, TX and Michael Dupuy, Amite, LA who took the final transfer positions. Pete Butler, Mabelvale, AR driving the Air Performance Heating & Air / Brodix Nr. 29H got past Gary Taylor on the fourth lap and went on to top the second B main ahead of Billy Alley, Lincoln, NE and Garry Lee Maier, Cimmaron, KS, passed Taylor late in the race to claim the final transfer spot.

Defending ASCS National Champion Zach Chappell of Talala, OK used a provisional to make the starting field for the preliminary feature 25 cars. 2002 Devil’s Bowl USA Sprint Car Champion Marvin Lough, Fort Worth, started on the pole and led the field under the green flag. The red flag came out seconds later when Garry Lee Maier tangled with another car and flipped on the front straight. He was not hurt. On the next start, Lough pulled away from outside front row starter Brian Harvill, Irving, TX, and paced the opening trip around the half-mile clay oval. Johnson was moving in the F&J Construction Nr. 29 and passed Lough for the lead in turn four as the second lap was completed. Johnson quickly built his lead to half the length of the front straightaway and was passing lapped traffic on the sixth lap when Darren Stewart spun in turn one to bring out the yellow flag.

Under the caution, Lough had a right rear flat and had to pull out of second place. Matt Clevenger moved past Harvill on the restart to take second, but could not catch Johnson as he flew around the track. Danny Jennings took the inside line in turn two to pass Clevenger for second on the tenth lap. Kevin Ramey and Tim Crawley soon passed Clevenger in lapped traffic for third and fourth positions. On the 14th lap, Ramey got by Jennings, but there were four lapped cars between himself and leader Johnson. A couple laps later Ramey got sideways in a dry spot in turn three and spun to the inside of the track. That brought out the yellow and setup a short dash to the checkered flag.

Michael Dupuy started 23rd in the feature and moved up to finish third.  Linda Fields Photo

In the restart lineup, 21st starting Gary Wright had worked up to fourth and Michael Dupuy, who started 23rd was right behind him in fifth. As Jennings tried to get past a lapped car, Wright made his move and claimed second place. Johnson was still the fastest car out front and took the checkered flag in the F&J Construction Nr. 29. Wright in the Southwest Express / Maxim Nr. 9 was second with Dupuy in the mIn Motorsports Management / Weld Wheels Nr. 4M taking third in the final turn from Crawley in the Simpson / G&A Commercial Nr. 87. Jennings was fifth in the Bishop Racing Components / AFCO Shocks Nr. 61J with Clevenger in the H&H Steel Fabrication / Napa of Lewisville and Grapevine Nr. 31 taking sixth.

Paul White also drove the Smiley’s Racing Products Nr. 1X USA modified, winning that 15-lap feature after a close battle early in the race with Randy Lynch in the Troy’s Used Cars - Garland Nr. 28L. White was able to pull away after the leaders caught lapped traffic on the tenth lap of the 15-lap main. Clyde Dunn, Jr. came from tenth at the start in the Dunn Brothers / Planet Beach Nr. 88 to take second in turn two with an exciting slide job on the final lap. In fourth behind Lynch was Randy Kirkland in the Reliable Plumbing / Baber’s Garage Nr. 77. Richard McGibboney rounded out the top five in the Baber’s Garage / Outlaw Fabrication Nr. 19. White and Tom Lorenz in the Smiley’s Racing Products / Hoosier Tire Southwest Nr. 84 won the heat races.
