Mesquite, TX (June 28) – For the second straight week Walter Dorsett made a last lap pass to win the street stock feature at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Saturday night. Larry Long captured his second straight super sprint feature. Jimmy Goodwin claimed the championship sprint victory, with Rowdy Starnes returning to victory lane in his USA modified. Darren Ellis won the late model main. When the green flag fell on the street stock 12-lap feature, Dorsett was on the outside of the fourth row in his Nikon Dallas / Home Care Supply Nr. 31. Up front it was Travis Pace in the Gary’s Machine Shop / Schramm’s Ammo & Weapons Nr. 17 taking the early lead after racing three wide through first and second turns. Michael Murphy challenged Pace for the lead and took over the top spot in turn two on the next lap in his Pinnacle Funding Mortgage Group Nr. 21. While Pace and Dorsett battled for second, Murphy pulled away to build his lead to half the length of the front straight. The only caution of the race flew on the seventh lap when Johnny Philpot lost his drive shaft.
The restart eliminated Murphy’s lead. Though it helped him avoid lapping slower traffic, putting Dorsett on Murphy’s rear bumper setup a close run to the finish. As the green flag waved, Dorsett powered past Pace to take the runner-up spot. In what has become a weekly show, the two roared around the track in a great race. Murphy held the high line and Dorsett was on the bottom for much of the final laps. Dorsett was able to pull alongside several times in the corners, but Murphy could always pull ahead on the straight. As the race continued, Dorsett was better able to hold his line low on the track. On the final lap, Murphy pushed up in turn two, giving Dorsett an opening. He did not hesitate and took the lead going down the back straight. Murphy tried to reclaim the top spot, but had to settle for second for the second straight week. Pace was third with fourth going to Frank Shaffer in the Automotive Machine Shop of Jacksonville / BL & Flat Broke Racing Nr. 84, followed by Gayla Jones in the Koool Touch Refrigeration / Imperial Electric Nr. 42. Michael Grubbs in the Fullen’s Crankshaft Service / Grubbs Motorsports Nr. 00X and Murphy won the heat races.
A field of 18 sprints took the green flag as the super sprints and championship sprints combined feature got started. Kurt Summers jumped out to the early lead in his Soulmans Barbeque / Johnny Suggs Racing Chassis Nr. 99. Sam Hafertepe, Jr. ran second in the early laps, battling with Larry Long for the spot. The caution soon came out when Loyd Clevenger came to a stop atop turn four. Hafertepe spun on the second restart. That gave Long a clear shot at Summers when they quickly approached the slowest of the championship sprints a couple laps after the green flag flew. Long made his move to put the Town East Ford / Speed Specialties Nr. 28 into the lead in turns three and four on the fifth lap. Summers had problems on a ninth lap restart and exited the race. That left Jeff Shaddock in second in his Garland Bolt Nr.12. Long was simple too fast, pulling away and working the slower traffic expertly on his way to his second straight super sprint victory at Devil’s Bowl.
Jimmy Goodwin started the Nr. 3 championship sprint on the inside fo the sixth row. He worked the traffic, but was only up to seventh when the first caution flew. Goodwin kept working, and soon was in the top five. After the ninth lap caution, Goodwin was able to close in and challenge Shaddock when they were in heavy traffic. Shaddock’s fuel injected horsepower allowed him to pull ahead on a clear track. Goodwin tried to stay up, but had to settle for third place over all, though he won the championship sprint class. Dale Wester drove the Jimmy Allard Machine & Supply Nr. 43X champ sprint to fourth overall, with James Fabian in the CP Trucking / Body Works by J&V Nr. 78 was fifth, third in champ sprints. Kurt Summers and Larry Long won the super sprint heats and Goodwin won the champ sprint heat.
Rowdy Starnes lined up on the inside of the seventh row as the USA modifieds took to the track. From the pole position, Dink McCullough took the lead as they charged down the front straight under the green flag. But the yellow waved moments later. On the restart, McCullough again pulled ahead in his Kelsey Equipment Repair / Duckworth Asphalt & Paving Nr. 00. Chris Locke in the Broadband Specialists / US Broadband Fleet Services Nr. 15 and Richard McGibboney in the Baber’s Garage / Red’s Meat Company Nr. 19 tangled in turn two after being bumped around in the three wide racing action. Both continued but McGibboney soon dropped out. The contact and spin cost Locke a change as the sweep bonus after he won his heat race and the trophy dash. The driver moving quickly though the pack early in the race was Clyde Dunn, Jr. in the Master Auto Body of Mesquite / Dunn Motorsports Nr. 88. He started on the fifth row and was fourth after three laps. A lap later Dunn challenged McCullough for the lead in a four wide move on the back straight. On the seventh lap, Dunn took over the lead and started to pull away. There were five cars battling for the second spot. Starnes was in the middle of that pack, and took third on the 10th lap while Dunn built his lead to over a dozen car lengths. After McCullough pulled out of the race, Starnes was second and closing on Dunn when the red flag flew. Frank Rose lost a drive shaft and the car rolled over atop turn four as it spun to a stop. He was not hurt, but the car was finished for the night. The caution eliminated Dunn’s lead. On the restart, Starnes pulled alaongside and the pair raced side by side. Starnes pulled ahead in the Starnes Trucking / Cain’s Engine Repair Nr. 50X as the white flag flew. Dunn was second at the checkered flag with Tracy Adams a strong third the entire race in his Broadband Specialists / US Broadband Fleet Services Nr. 4. Johnny Dunn, Jr. taking fourth in the Nr. 99 and Ronnie Carty fifth in the Southwest Engines / Hanson & Sons Chassis Shop Nr. 71. For the third time this year, and second week in a row, Starnes earned the Timber Wolf Racing Hard Charger Award by passing 12 cars in his run from 13th to first. Dale Wester won the USA modified B main in the Jimmy Allard Machine & Supply / T - N - T Truck Parts Nr. 12, while Clyde Dunn, Jr. and Frank Rose in the Competition Machine, Plano / Sherrell Heating & AC Nr. 18 won the other two heat races.
Jack Ambern, Jr. took the lead at the start of the late model main, running around the outside of the opening turns in the Woody Weaver Pharmacy Nr. 47. Steve Trevathan tried to come up the middle of a large pack of cars, but the contact damaged his car and forced him out of the race. Darren Ellis driving the Blueprint Service of Plano Nr. 23 avoided major contact and was soon third. After a couple laps, Ellis passed the Nr. ZZ of Sloppy Hogg to take the runner-up position. On the sixth trip around the track, Weaver slipped off the back straight and Ellis jumped into the lead. Weaver dropped out a couple laps later, Ellis maintained a solid two or three car length lead. Running a perfect line, Ellis was able to take the checkered flag by three car lengths. Hogg was second, with Jimmy Goodwin in the TFA Automatic Sprinklers Nr. 12 third after a close battle with Ronnie Long in the Town East Ford Nr. 28. Rounding out the top five was Skip O’Neal in the Barnsco Construction Materials / Urban Fire Protection Nr. 8. Chuck Beusch in the Family Chiropractic 1st Care / Judy’s Café Nr. 13 and Steve Trevathan in the Nr. 3 won the heat races. Next week Devil’s Bowl Speedway hosts two nights of exciting racing action. On Thursday night, Juily 3rd, the SUPR Outlaw Late Models make their only appearance this year at Devil's Bowl. Also racing Thursday evening will be the USA modifieds and a FIREWORKS show. On Saturday night the Super Sprints, Championship Sprints, USA Modifieds, Late Models and Street Stocks will all be racing at Devil's Bowl. Story by Reggie Fields.
