Mesquite, TX (Sept 4) - Rusty Trevathan topped the USA modifieds in his second race at Devil=s Bowl this season. Ronnie Long took the late model main. Mark Ross returned to victory lane in the street stocks and Jimmy Goodwin led the championship sprints to the checkered flag
Trevathan moved up to the pole position on the start of the USA modified 15-lapper. When the green flag dropped Trevathan pulled into the lead in his Nr. 51 Day Motorsports / R&B Motorsports / Speedpro Signs modified. Trevathan took off and ran away from the field during the early laps of the race. Johnny Dunn, Jr. had moved up to second by the eighth lap, but problems with the Martinez Restaurant / Speed Specialties Nr. 99 forced him to pull off the track and the yellow flag flew to retrieve his car. One the restart, Clyde Dunn, Jr. took off around the outside to claim second in the Smiley=s / Crandall Cotton Gin Restaurant Nr. 88, but was soon in a battle with Bobby Ruffin Smiley=s / Hoosier Tire Southwest Nr. 121 for the runner-up position. Trevathan easily pulled away with the second and third place cars battling for position. He continued to build his lead and charged to the checkered flag. Clyde Dunn, Jr. and Ruffin fought for the second spot, until problems forced Ruffin to drop out just a couple laps before the finish. Dunn took second as the race finished, with Randy Kirkland taking third in the Reliable Plumbing / American Locksmith Nr. 77, followed by Richard Miller in the Jeanie=s Used Auto Parts / Rick Shipp Rebuilders Nr. 1X and Steve Sickels in the Crandall Cotton Gin Restaurant / Premier Auto Nr. 50 in fourth and fifth positions. Kirkland, Trevathan and Billy Fronterhouse in the Speed Specialties Racing Engines Nr. 5 won the heat races.
The late models got off to a wild start. Points leader Tom Lorenz had his Smiley=s Race Car Products Nr. 84 break in hot laps. Woody Weaver won the first heat in his Weaver Pharmacy / ABT Transmissions Nr. 47. The second heat race had to be the shortest in Devil=s Bowl history. Mike Ambern won by running just a half lap in his Weaver Pharmacy / ABT Transmissons Nr. 29. In the start of the race, the cars behing Ambern started crashing when they reached the flag stand. Every other car in the heat race was too badly damaged from the five car crash to continue. Jimmy Quick, Jr. led the final heat from start to finish in the Ron=s Racing / Lane Automotive Nr. 55. Skip O=Neal in the Urban Fire Protection / O=Neal Racing Nr. 8 got past Weaver on the fourth lap of the trophy dash to win the Hoosier $100 bonus. During the time between the second heat and the feature, the late model teams thrashed to get their cars back together for the feature. Lorenz=s car on the trailer became a spare parts bin. When the green flag fell on the late model feature, the wounded machines were at the back of the field. Britt Ables set the pace for the first lap in the Ables Auto / Troy=s Cars Nr. 51, with Darren Ellis in the Blueprint Service of Plano Nr. 23. Ellis stayed out front until Ronnie Long got past on the fourth lap. Once he was out front, Long was uncatchable in the Town East Ford Nr. 28. His only competition came when the yellow flag flew a couple times at mid-race. O=Neal was up to second and tried to get past Long on the restarts, but with a clear track, Long had no trouble pulling away and takin the win. O=Neal and Ellis battled to the finish to take second and third, with Patrick Daniel in the Hi-Way Auto Parts / The Shop Nr. 75 taking fourth and Aaron Morey fifth in the Smiley=s / Hoosier Tire Southwest Nr. 24.
The street stocks put on another outstanding feature race. George Parish led the opening lap in his Parrish Racing / Jeanie=s Auto Parts Nr. 49, but Danny Zimmerman came from the third row to take the top position in his PepBoys/ Master Auto Body Nr. 11. But just two laps later, Zimmerman, who won the two previous features, was battling to hold the lead as Mark Ross in the Ross Racing / Tommy G=s Welding Nr. 8 and Walter Dorsett in the Nikon Dallas/ R&D Racing Nr. 31 closed up on his back bumper. The leaders raced hard for the top spot, especially when they caught and lapped a slower car. Ross picked the right line as they came down for the checkered flag. With Zimmerman slowed by a lapped car, Ross took the victory. Third behind Zimmerman was Dorsett, followed closely by Trandel White in the Verna May / Garcia=s Lawn Care Nr. 10 and Jason Trevathan in the Forney Auto Tech / Anson Powder Coating Nr. 3. It was an especially sweet victory for Ross, the early points leader this season. He has had nothing but trouble recently. Trevathan also finished a feature for the first time in over a month. In the heat races, Trandel White won his heat, along with Steve Trevathan in the Nr. 14 and Johnny Philpot in the J&S Direct Doors Nr. 12.
Goodwin led only one lap of the Nr. 3X championship sprint - the last one and the only one which counted when the checkered flag fell. Gary Grosvenor in the Nr. 20X Enduro Powder Coating / Gary=s Machine Shop championship sprint took the lead on the start and pulled away on a clear track. The caution flew for Troy Bontrager=s Grice Machine/ Fitness Club of Murphy Nr. 10T. He was able to rejoin the field before the green flag flew. With Grosvenor out front, Goodwin and Bobby Ruffin in the Nr. 6X battled briefly for second as the race resumed. Goodwin was fast, but could not bet in position to challenge Grosvenor for most of the race. But when Grosvenor had to slow in the final laps for lapped traffic, Goodwin quickly closed in and got past both Grosvenor and the lapped car on the final circuit. Ruffin was third behind Grosvenor, with Dale Wester running fourth in the T & T Truck Parts / Jimmy Allard Racing Engines Nr. 12. Kim Wilke in the Kim Barr Racing Engines Nr. 38 was fifth. Grosvenor and Ruffin won the heat races. Devil’s Bowl Speedway – Race
