Mesquite, TX (September 3) – Jack Ambern,
Jr. held off Darren Ellis through two late restarts to take the late model
victory at Devil's Bowl Speedway Saturday night. Matt Clevenger returned
to victory lane with a strong victory in the super sprints. Steve
Trevathan set the pace for the street stocks. Rick McCommas avoided an
early crash which sent Richard Miller and Clyde Dunn, Jr. flipping to win
the USA modified feature.
Dunn and Miller were okay, but their cars were badly
damaged. Martin Edwards also got upside down when his super sprint jumped
the cushion. Edwards was not hurt and his car was able to roll back to the
pits.
Dink's Notebook
What
another great night of racing! Car count was still good with only a few
point nights of racing left. We had a real fast race track once again even
though it turned black during the Sprint feature. I sure hated to
see Clyde Dunn Jr and Richard Miller go over in the Modified Feature, glad
both we're OK and able to walk away. Rick McCommas was back in Victory
Lane once again in the Modifieds helping to solidify his Championship run.
Congrats again to Steve Trevathan, Rick McCommas, Jack Ambern Jr. and Matt
Clevenger on their Feature wins. Hope to see you all back next week.

Late Model Notes: Jack Ambern, Jr. won his
heat race just ahead of Darren Ellis. In the feature Ambern again spent
the final laps holding off Ellis. On the start Ambern got clear of the
traffic and pulled away. One early caution did not hurt Ambern, but when
the yellow flag flew on the ninth lap it erased a comfortable lead. Ellis
tried everything he could, even moving up to the top of the track on the
final lap, but Ambern held his car on the bottom of the track in the turns
to control the race. Jerry Horn won the first heat race.

sprint feature. (Photo by Linda Fields) |
Super Sprint Notes: Most of the features has a
good tacky track, but it got dry late and when the sprints started putting
all the hot wind on the track - it got black very quickly. A spin on the
opening lap, then Martin Edwards flip slowed down the early laps. Jeff
Shaddock had taken off from the start, but engine problems and a small
fire ended his day on the third lap. Clevenger had just gotten past Chris
Tarrant for the second spot and took over the lead. Two other cautions
slowed the race but did not hinder Clevenger on his way to victory.
Charlie Brown started last in the 16 car field, and climbed to second in
his first night in the Nr. 9 sprinter. Jeff Shaddock and Chris Tarrant won
the heat races.
It was great to see Larry Long back on the track
after his hard flip a month ago.

flag fell on the street stock feature - with his Anson Powder
Coating, Pit Stop Pizza, Falcon Supply Nr. 14. (Photo by Linda Fields) |
Street Stock Notes: Steve Trevathan is always
up front when he races at Devil's Bowl. Though usually working on the
setup for his son Jason's Nr. 3, he's been know to run a fast lap now and
then. Points leader Trandel White got caught in an early spin and was a
lap down by the time he got going again. Trevathan took the lead on the
third lap - the car was handling perfect and no one got close for the rest
of the race. A mid-race caution bunched the field for the final laps.
White, a lap down, passed the fourth, third and second place cars, but got
a bit sideways in turn two on the last lap. Second running Danny Zimmerman
got caught up and also spun. Kevin Newbill, running near the back of the
pack, apparently did not see Zimmerman's stopped car until too late and
crashed into it very hard. Zimmerman's car may not be repairable. The
checkerd flew with the caution, and Mark Ross was credited with second
place. Jason Trevathan and Zimmerman won the heat races and Jason
Trevathan topped the trophy dash.

USA Modified Notes: Joseph Kasper won the
first heat race in his K&S Boat Repair and Detail/ Speed Pro Signs/
R&B Motorsports Nr. 52 - a great effort by the young driver in one of
the most economical cars on the track. Rick McCommas won the other heat
race. An opening lap crash took out two top contenders - Clyde Dunn, Jr.
and Richard Miller. Charles Lasater got sideways in turn three - he was
running in the top five. The cars behind him started to check up, and the
expected happened in the very close three and four wide racing. Some of
the cars at the back did not see the spin and hit the back of cars slowing
down.
Dunn got shoved into Miller, and as Miller's car
turned sideways it dug into the track. That sent Miller flipping and
tossed Dunn's car into the air, landing on it's roof. Both drivers crawled
out okay, though the cars looked like a rolling junkyard.
McCommas was on the outside and able to miss the
crash. On the restart it took him just two laps to get to the front. A
ninth lap caution put Randy Kirkland and Jeff Welborn on his back bumper -
but he had no trouble pulling away when the green flew and taking the
victory.
