Darren Ellis made his ninth trip to victory lane this season as he closes in on the late model title.

Dink's Notebook

What an exciting night! I hope the Tosch Elementary students and staff enjoyed their night at the track. Some of the best racing we've seen all year happened tonight. Once again we had a good fast race track that did turn black in the Sprint feature. The heat races were exciting to say the least as well as the Modified Trophy Dash. It was good to see Charlie Brown back in winning form in the Sprints, Colby Smith in the Modifieds and Gary Corbin winning his first feature in the Street Stocks. Once again Darren Ellis showed the way in the Late Models. Congrats again to all the feature winners and Good Luck to all the rest of the year.

Gary Corbin started four rows deep, but was out front of the street stock feature on the third lap. Joining Gary in celebrating his first victory at Devil's Bowl are his son David and wife Dian,  and crew chief for the TST Catastrophe Management Nr. 02 Mark Shipman.  (Photo by Linda Fields)

Street Stock Notes: Strong runs on their way to victory in the heat races by Gary Corbin, Mark Ross in the Ross Racing / Tommy G's Welding / Speed Specialties Nr. 8 and Frank Shafer in the Performance Auto Supply Nr. 84. Pat Walls set the early pace for the feature in his Walls Racing / Sue Walls CPA Nr. 39, but Cobin took the lead on the third lap and never looked back. Corbin led the caution free race to the checkered flag.

Danny Zimmerman took the runner-up spot, also on the third lap. Zimmerman chased Corbin, narrowing the gap in his Quality Intermodal Delivery Service / Masters Auto Body Nr. 11X for his best run in the new car. Mike Walls was strong taking third in the Walls Racing / Rat Pack Racing Nr. 38 with Jason Trevathan fourth in the Anson Powder Coating / Pit Stop Pizza Nr. 3 and Walter Dorsett rounding out the top five in his Nikon Dallas/ R&D Racing Nr. 31, after having to restart on the rear when he lost his trunk lid on the first attempt to start the feature.

Zimmerman's strong run and Trandel White's damage in a heat race crash in the Verna May / Garcia's Lawn Care Nr. 10 tightened the street stock points battle with White's lead over Zimmerman now just 180 points.

Super Sprint Notes: Dan Burk in the Nr. 49 and Todd Evans in the Filip Automotive of San Angelo Nr. 14E topped the super sprint heat races. David Gailley grabbed the early lead on the feature - three times. Martin Edwards had a flat, spun in the Park's Auto Sales Nr. 45 and collected Dale Wester in the Service King Collision Repair / Allard Racing Engines Nr. 12W on the first start.

The next time the green flag fell, the field almost got a lap completed, but Chris Tarrant clipped an infield marker tire in his Auto Meter / Jett's Performance / TPI Travel / Forney Car Wash Nr. 71, sending the car into the outside wall. The red flag to remove the car gave the crews for Edwards and Wester the time needed to repair their cars and be able to rejoin the race.

Gailley, with to top wing on his Gailley Motorsports / Custom Trailers Nr. 24 decorated by the children and teachers at Tosch Elementary School, set the pace for the first seven caution free laps. Charlie Brown started on the fifth row, and worked his way to the front, passing Gailley for the lead on the outside in turn four. Brown had no trouble taking his ninth super sprint victory of the season, his first since taking over driving the Mack's Auto Service / U-Store-It of Greenville Nr. 9. Evans claimed the runner-up spot, with Kurt Summers running a strong third in the Sugar Daddy Kennels / Soulman's Bar-B-Que Nr. 99. Spoerl in the Allard Racing Engines Nr. 6 and Gailley rounded out the top five as the checkered flag fell.

Colby Smith came from the sixth row to put himself into position to fly around the outside and take the lead on a 12th lap restart in the USA modified feature. It was Colby's second victory of the season in the Innovative Designs / The Shop / Jesse's Body Shop Nr. 01. (Photo by Linda Fields)

USA Modified Notes: Charles Lasater topped the first heat in his Acelco Services Nr. 17, with Travis Pace taking the second heat race in his Baxter Motorsports Nr. 17X. Joseph Kasper took the third heat in the K&S Boat Repair and Detail / Speed Pro Signs Nr. 52. Lasater won the trophy dash.

When the green flag fell on the 15-lap feature, Pace charged around the outside for the lead, with Kasper holding the second spot. Randy Kirkland took over the runner-up position in his Reliable Plumbing / American Locksmith Nr. 77 on the seventh circuit.

A caution after the 11th lap closed up the field. On the restart, Smith lined up on the outside after having moved up to the third spot. When the green flag fell, he took off and flew around the top of the first turn to claim the lead from Pace. Kirkland took the second spot again a lap later, but could not catch the determined Smith as the race was completed. Tim Knott moved up to third in the final laps in his Western Coach / Century 21 - Mike Bowman Nr. 41. Richard Miller edged Pace on the final lap to take fourth in the Jeanie's Used Auto Parts / Rick Shipp Rebuilders Nr. 1$.

Late Model Notes: Ellis domination of the late model class at Devil's Bowl in the second half of the season continued Saturday night. Ronnie Welborn claimed the first heat race in the Baxter Motorsports / Kountry Kids Day Care Nr. 20, with Ellis winning the other heat. Welborn led the opening lap of the feature, with Skip O'Neal pacing the second lap in the Urban Fire Protection / Wes Lockridge Associates Nr. 8. Ellis flew around the top of the track in his Adam's Fence/ Race Ragz Nr. 21X and took the lead on teh third lap, never looking back.

O'Neal stayed in the second spot, but could only watch Ellis pull away as the latter half of the feature was caution free. Tom Lorenz moved into third in his Smiley's Race Car Products / Hoosier Tire Southwest Nr. 84, with Bob Ewell in the Longhorn Urethane / Rick Sisk Performance Nr. 85 taking fourth and Jack Ambern, Jr. rounding out the top five in the Weaver Pharmacy / ABT Transmission Nr. 2.
